Polaris Bank has graduated 58 new hires from its flagship Polaris Graduate Intensive Training, PGIT and Polaris Tech Ignite Programme, PTIP, reaffirming its commitment to developing world-class talent in Nigeria’s financial sector.

The graduation ceremony, held in Lagos on April 8, 2026, brought together senior executives and invited guests to celebrate the achievement of the highly competitive cohort, selected from over 10,000 applicants.

Addressing the graduates, the Managing Director/CEO, Kayode Lawal, charged them to embrace continuous learning and adaptability in an increasingly technology-driven world.

“Never stop learning, because life never stops teaching,” he said. “In today’s digital era, staying relevant requires constantly upgrading your skills, especially as advancements in artificial intelligence continue to reshape the workplace.”

Lawal also emphasised the importance of integrity, describing it as the foundation of a successful banking career.

“Integrity is the hallmark of a banker—once you lose it, you lose everything. What we truly sell is our reputation,” he stated.

He further encouraged the graduates to cultivate disciplined financial habits, humility, and gratitude, noting that success extends beyond professional achievements to include strong values and respect for others.

The Ogun State Police Command has intensified its enforcement drive under Operation “No Traffic Gridlock,” recording significant gains in Sango Ota and Ijebu Ode Toll Gate areas.

The operation, carried out on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, targeted illegal parking, roadside trading, and other activities contributing to traffic congestion across key corridors in the state.

In the Sango Ota axis, coordinated night operations led by the Area Commander resulted in the removal of shanties and illegal structures obstructing road setbacks.

Early morning enforcement efforts also led to the clearance of major obstruction points and the impoundment of six vehicles found violating traffic regulations.

The Command said the intervention has led to improved traffic flow in the area, with sustained monitoring ongoing to maintain compliance.

Similarly, enforcement operations in the Ijebu Ode Toll Gate corridor focused on indiscriminate parking of heavy-duty trucks and roadside trading along the highway. The exercise, led by the Area Commander in the area, ensured the systematic clearance of truck build-ups and other obstructions.

According to the police, the operation has significantly eased vehicular movement within the axis, while continuous monitoring has been put in place to sustain the progress.

Ojajuni warned that illegal parking, roadside trading, and obstruction of highways would not be tolerated, stressing that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

He reiterated the Command’s commitment to sustaining the operation until seamless traffic flow is achieved across all affected corridors in Ogun State.

The police also urged members of the public to support the initiative by reporting traffic-related issues through designated emergency lines.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Maritime Police Command, Okunade Ronke Nurat, has reaffirmed the need for stronger inter-agency collaboration following a strategic visit to the Western Naval Command.

Okunade made this known during a courtesy visit to the Flag Officer Commanding, A. A. Mustapha, at the Headquarters of the Western Naval Command, as part of efforts to enhance security across Nigeria’s maritime domain.

The engagement provided a platform for both the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Navy to reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding coastal and inland waterways through improved coordination, intelligence sharing, and joint operational strategies.

Speaking during the visit, Okunade emphasised that maritime security is a shared responsibility, stressing the importance of sustained synergy between security agencies.

Fidelity Bank Plc has emerged as a frontrunner in Nigeria’s banking sector recapitalisation exercise, successfully exceeding the N500 billion minimum capital requirement set by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

As the recapitalisation deadline closed on March 31, 2026, most banks met the regulatory threshold, but Fidelity Bank stood out with a proactive and strategic approach to capital raising.

The bank recorded a major milestone after completing a N259 billion private placement of ordinary shares, which was opened and concluded in a single day on December 31, 2025. The exercise attracted strong investor interest, including participation from African Export-Import Bank and its subsidiaries.

Following the capital raise and subsequent verification process, the bank’s capital base rose from N305.5 billion to N564.5 billion, placing it comfortably above the regulatory benchmark for banks with international authorisation.

The Company Secretary, Ezinwa Unuigboje, disclosed in a statement on the Nigerian Exchange Limited that the private placement was conducted with approvals from both the CBN and the Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria.

Market analysts said the successful exercise underscores strong investor confidence in Fidelity Bank’s growth strategy, governance structure, and long-term fundamentals, despite evolving macroeconomic conditions and tighter regulatory standards.

The latest capital raise builds on earlier efforts by the bank. In 2024, Fidelity Bank raised N175.85 billion through a public offer and rights issue, bringing its capital to N305.5 billion at the time. The new N259 billion injection has now fully bridged the previous shortfall of N194.5 billion.

The bank noted that the strengthened capital position would enhance its balance sheet resilience, support expansion, and enable it to play a more significant role in financing key sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Fidelity Bank added that it remains focused on delivering value to shareholders, maintaining prudent risk management, and sustaining profitability in the post-recapitalisation era.

Meanwhile, the bank’s shares closed trading at N19.50 per share on April 10, 2026, on the Nigerian Exchange.

In a statement, the Command addressed circulating messages alleging possible violence in areas including Shitta, Akerele, Itire/Aguda, and Ishaga, noting that such claims are unverified and misleading.

The Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, said the Command had taken proactive and decisive steps to prevent any breakdown of law and order across the affected locations.

According to him, police personnel and operational assets were promptly deployed to the identified areas and adjoining communities following initial reports, while patrols have been intensified to ensure public safety.

Fatai added that officers have been strategically positioned, with increased police visibility across the flashpoints to deter unlawful gatherings and criminal activities.

He reassured residents that the areas remain secure, urging them to continue their daily activities without fear.

The police, however, cautioned against the spread of unverified information capable of causing panic, advising residents to rely only on credible sources for updates.

Members of the public were also encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace and order across Lagos.

Colleagues, family members, and well-wishers have gathered to celebrate the retirement of Mrs Abosede Oluwakemi George, the outgoing Permanent Secretary of the Local Government Service Commission, marking the end of a distinguished 32-year career in the Lagos State Public Service.

Speakers at the event, they described George as a disciplined, compassionate, and committed administrator whose contributions have left a lasting impact on governance and public administration in Lagos.

In tributes, colleagues highlighted her leadership qualities, noting that her dedication, loyalty, and strong sense of duty earned her recognition and eventual appointment as Permanent Secretary.

“She is a warm, kind-hearted, God-loving, and compassionate administrator with a keen sense of excellence. Her contributions to the body of Permanent Secretaries have significantly influenced major government decisions,” Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Sunkanmi Oyegbola said.

Also speaking, Commissioner Two, Lagos State Teaching Service Commissioner, Abiodun Bamigboye, described her as “enigmatic, intelligent, and ever ready to take responsibility,” recalling her role during a key transition from traditional administration to modern human resource management within the civil service.

“She is a pathfinder who has impacted the service positively,” he added.

Family members also paid glowing tributes, with her son, Rotimi George, describing the occasion as emotional and fulfilling, noting that her retirement coincided with her 60th birthday.

Reflecting on her career, Mrs George expressed a sense of fulfilment and gratitude, stating that she leaves office without regrets.

“I feel delighted. I’m happy. Sixty is a great age. I’m leaving fulfilled, joyful, and with no sadness,” she said.

In her valedictory remarks, she urged serving public officers to prioritise dedication, excellence, and purpose over financial gain.

“Dedication is key. The monetary aspect is good, but it should not be the focus. The focus should be on who you want to become in the service,” she said.

Mrs George described her 32-year journey in the civil service as “beautiful,” attributing her success to the support of mentors and colleagues. She also recounted her role in managing the Oracle Human Resources system at the Public Service Office, where she worked with multiple Heads of Service to ensure accuracy in salary administration.

She highlighted her career across several government agencies, including the Ministry of Establishment, Training and Pensions, Lagos Water Corporation, and the Office of Overseas Affairs and Investment, later known as the Office of Sustainable Development Goals and Investments.

On work-life balance, she shared how she combined her demanding role with motherhood, often supervising her children’s schoolwork at the office while attending to official duties.

Mrs George, fondly called “Georg elle” by colleagues, emphasised that she never lobbied for postings but remained committed to delivering her best in every assignment.

In her closing remarks, she commended the Lagos State Public Service as a leading institution and urged serving officers to uphold its standards.

“They should keep the flag flying and maintain the standards as we move higher,” she said.

CAPPA Urges Urgent Government Intervention Over Abereke Ocean Surge, Oil Spill Crisis

Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa, CAPPA has called on the Federal Government and the Ondo State Government to take immediate action over what it described as a worsening environmental and humanitarian crisis in Abereke community, Ilaje Local Government Area.

In a statement following a field visit, the organisation said recurring oil spills and ocean surges have devastated livelihoods and submerged large parts of the coastal community, leaving residents in dire conditions.

Describing the situation as “devastating and fast deteriorating,” CAPPA warned that inhabitants of Abereke are facing severe environmental degradation and growing economic hardship.

“Abereke is in the throes of a preventable disaster,” said Martins Ogunlade. “What we saw is a community abandoned to the combined impacts of corporate irresponsibility and government inaction. This cannot continue.”

According to the group, the latest oil spill, allegedly linked to Guarantee Petroleum Company, occurred in October but continues to have devastating effects on the community.

CAPPA’s assessment revealed widespread contamination of water bodies, destruction of aquatic life, and damage to fishing equipment such as nets, boats, and engines. The group noted that fishing, the main source of livelihood in the area, has been severely disrupted, pushing many households deeper into poverty.

The organisation also raised concerns over worsening coastal erosion and tidal surges, which have submerged large portions of land and left the community exposed to further environmental threats.

“The economic base of Abereke is being rapidly eroded. Families are struggling to fish and their animals, including goats, sheep, and pigs, are dying. Even access to clean water now comes at a cost. This is a clear case of environmental injustice,” Ogunlade added.

CAPPA further decried the collapse of critical infrastructure, including the community’s only primary school, which has reportedly been destroyed by tidal waves, cutting off access to education. It also noted the absence of healthcare facilities, leaving residents to rely on local remedies.

The group said repeated appeals by the community to authorities have yielded little response, despite several letters and complaints to the state government and oil companies operating in the region.

It also highlighted the broader issue of oil pollution in Ilaje, accusing major operators such as Shell, Chevron, Agip, and Guarantee Petroleum Company of contributing to ecological damage across the area.

CAPPA called for urgent intervention measures, including a comprehensive environmental impact assessment, immediate clean-up of polluted sites, and the construction of coastal protection infrastructure to prevent further erosion.

The organisation also demanded compensation for affected residents, restoration of livelihoods, and the rebuilding of critical infrastructure such as schools.

“Like many other suffering communities in Ondo State, the people of Abereke are demanding justice, not charity,” Ogunlade said. “Government must act now to protect lives, restore dignity, and hold polluters accountable.”

CAPPA pledged to continue amplifying the voices of affected communities through sustained advocacy efforts.

Lagos Blue Economy Can Generate ₦500bn Annually — Emmanuel

The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Damilola Emmanuel, says the state’s blue economy has the potential to generate between ₦300 billion and ₦500 billion annually if fully developed.

Emmanuel disclosed this during a radio interview, noting that Lagos holds significant opportunities across inland waterways transportation, fisheries, aquaculture, coastal tourism, and port operations.

According to him, Lagos, as a coastal state, already possesses vast blue economy assets but requires better coordination and investment to fully harness them. He noted that global attention is shifting from green finance to blue bonds, presenting new opportunities for revenue generation and sustainable development.

The adviser revealed that the state has secured about €10 million in funding through the French Government to boost inland water transportation, while ongoing rehabilitation of major ports is expected to improve cargo movement and reduce logistics challenges.

He explained that improved water transport and port infrastructure would enhance business productivity, reduce traffic congestion, and create employment opportunities across multiple sectors.

On tourism, Emmanuel said Lagos plans to develop maritime hubs and coastal destinations capable of attracting international visitors, similar to global tourist centres, thereby increasing revenue and global visibility for the state.

He dismissed concerns that Lagos was late in embracing the blue economy, insisting the state remains at the forefront of innovation in Nigeria and West Africa.

The Special Adviser also emphasised strong collaboration between the state and federal agencies, noting that effective coordination is key to maximising the benefits of the sector.

On infrastructure, he highlighted ongoing investments in jetties, terminals, ferries, and patrol boats, including the introduction of Africa’s first electric ferry developed in Lagos.

Addressing environmental concerns, Emmanuel stressed the need for collective responsibility in tackling water pollution, noting that most waste in waterways originates from improper disposal on land. He also said the government is working with relevant agencies to enforce environmental regulations and maintain cleaner waterways.

He further assured that plans are underway to identify and remove wrecks obstructing inland waterways, while also developing strategies to support local fishermen through better data management and allocation of fishing zones.
