Ahead the 2027 general elections, Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa, CAPPA has called on all tiers of government, electoral bodies, and political actors to take urgent steps to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and address mounting socio-economic and security challenges.

In a statement issued in Abuja after a board meeting, the organisation stressed that the country’s democratic future depends not only on periodic elections but also on the credibility of institutions, transparency of processes, and protection of citizens’ rights.

CAPPA warned that for the 2027 elections to be credible, they must be free, fair, and inclusive, conducted without violence, voter suppression, or political intimidation.

“Nigeria cannot afford another electoral cycle marred by irregularities, hate speech, and loss of public trust,” the organisation said, urging stakeholders to uphold the rule of law.

The group called on the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies to begin early preparations to ensure transparency and accountability in the electoral process. It also tasked the judiciary with resisting any attempts to undermine the will of the people.

CAPPA further raised concerns about the growing influence of money in politics, noting that vote-buying and undue influence by powerful interests continue to weaken democratic institutions and public confidence. It urged political parties to strengthen internal democracy to prevent conflicts that could destabilise the electoral environment.

On security, the organisation expressed alarm over persistent killings, kidnappings, and violent attacks across the country despite significant budgetary allocations to the sector.

“It is deeply troubling that Nigerians continue to face daily threats to their lives and livelihoods,” CAPPA stated, calling for a comprehensive overhaul of the nation’s security architecture, with emphasis on intelligence gathering, community engagement, and justice for victims.

Addressing the economy, CAPPA noted that recent reforms, including fuel subsidy removal and increased allocations to subnational governments, have yet to deliver meaningful relief to citizens. It highlighted rising inflation, unemployment, and declining purchasing power as ongoing concerns for many households.

“While fiscal reforms are often necessary, they must not come at the expense of the most vulnerable,” the organisation said, urging transparency in the management of public resources and equitable distribution of economic gains.

CAPPA also called on federal and state governments to invest in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and water infrastructure, while implementing policies to cushion the impact of economic reforms on citizens.

The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with civil society groups, communities, and the media to promote accountability and public participation in governance.
