As the world marks Chinese Language Day 2026, the Nigeria–China Strategic Partnership, NCSP has highlighted the critical role of language in driving economic growth, innovation, and cross-border collaboration.
The annual observance, established by the United Nations in 2010 to promote multilingualism and cultural diversity, is themed “Characters Endure, Civilization Shines.”
In a statement commemorating the Day, the Director-General of NCSP, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, described the Chinese language as a reflection of discipline, structure, and long-term vision, qualities he said have shaped China’s economic transformation.
“Chinese characters are more than symbols; they embody history, discipline, and philosophy. These same principles… remain highly relevant to Nigeria’s development journey,” he said.
Tegbe noted that as Nigeria strengthens bilateral ties with China, language and cultural literacy are becoming increasingly important in enhancing cooperation across trade, technology transfer, and industrialisation.
He added that China’s development model offers valuable lessons for Nigerian businesses, particularly in building scalable systems, strengthening core competencies, and promoting incremental innovation.
“There is a direct link between how people communicate and how they build. For Nigeria, embracing structured learning, including language, is not optional; it is strategic,” Tegbe said.
The NCSP reiterated that its mandate goes beyond facilitating agreements, focusing also on knowledge exchange initiatives aimed at delivering measurable economic value. These include support for small and medium-scale enterprises and improved access to Chinese markets, including emerging zero-tariff trade opportunities.
Tegbe further urged Nigerian entrepreneurs to adopt long-term, system-driven growth strategies inspired by China’s emphasis on reinvestment, cost discipline, and industrial clustering.
“Language is the entry point, but understanding is the advantage,” he added, stressing the need to equip young Nigerians with the skills required to compete globally.
The Partnership reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria–China relations through structured, results-driven engagement anchored on mutual growth and long-term value creation.
