FirstBank has announced that the 2025 edition of its Agric and Export Conference will hold on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at the Eko Convention Centre, Lagos.

Ogun Police Debunk Viral Security Alert, Warn Against Spreading Panic

The Ogun State Police Command has announced that a shooting range exercise for recruit constables will be held on Thursday, 14 August 2025, at the 35 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Alamala, Abeokuta.

In a statement, the Command advised residents and commuters in and around the area to steer clear of marked zones during the exercise, assuring the public that strict safety measures have been put in place.

While noting that the training will involve multiple gunshot sounds, the police urged residents not to panic as the exercise is aimed at boosting the operational readiness of officers.

The statement further appealed for public cooperation and thanked residents for their understanding as the training is carried out.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Ken Opara, Executive Director for Lagos and South West, represented by Chioma Nwankwo, Regional Bank Head, Lagos Central, said the promo was designed to inspire responsible saving habits.

NAWOJ Lagos Congratulates Dr. Adeola Ekine on Appointment as Special Adviser to NUJ President

The Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ has congratulated its immediate past Chairperson, Dr. Adeola Ekine, on her appointment as Special Adviser to the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya.

The appointment was announced on Tuesday during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the NUJ held in Kano.

Dr. Ekine, a respected journalist and public affairs specialist, is known for her extensive experience in media and communication. She previously served as Chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos, where she was commended for her leadership, commitment to gender equality, and efforts to empower women in the media industry.

Her past roles include Vice Chairperson and Secretary of the NUJ Lagos Information Chapel. She is also a recipient of the Honorary Doctoral Fellowship Award from the Institute of Public Sector Management (IPSM), UK.

During her tenure at NAWOJ Lagos, Dr. Ekine led several advocacy and courtesy visits to public, private, and cultural organisations, including the Oba of Ikateland to strengthen collaboration on journalism advancement and women’s empowerment.

She is an active member of NAWOJ, NUJ, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR and the IPSM.

NAWOJ Lagos expressed confidence that her appointment will bring valuable expertise and support to the NUJ leadership.

LASG SET TO ADDRESS SOCIAL IMPACT OF ILLEGAL DREDGING AT 1ST WATERFRONT SUMMIT

The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development, MWID has reiterated its commitment to tackling the growing menace of illegal dredging and its devastating impact on communities across the State.

Speaking to members of staff at the Ministry ahead of the 1st Waterfront Summit, scheduled for 12th September 2025, the Hon. Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Dayo Bush-Alebiosu, called for active community involvement in confronting the crisis.

He warned that residents who encourage or participate in illegal dredging are “engineering their own downfall,” as the environmental, social, and economic consequences of their actions will ultimately harm their own lives and the lives of the entire populace.

Alebiosu described illegal dredging as a “silent destroyer” of coastal and riverine communities, noting that it accelerates erosion, worsens flooding, disrupts aquatic life, and destroys livelihoods dependent on fishing and water-based commerce especially in areas like Makoko.

He stressed that the persistent nature of this problem is what has made it one of the major topics for deliberation at the upcoming summit.

“We cannot overemphasize the devastating impact these activities could have on our daily lives and on posterity. This is why we have made it a point of necessity to bring it to the global stage, where all stakeholders from riverine states in Nigeria, government agencies to community leaders, environmental experts, and private sector partners will deliberate and chart a lasting solution,” Alebiosu said.

He emphasized that the summit would serve as a collaborative platform to foster dialogue, share best practices, and develop actionable policies that safeguard Lagos’ waterfronts for present and future generations.

The Commissioner urged members of the public to register and participate in the summit through the official links available on all the Ministry’s social media platforms, noting that collective action is key to ending the scourge of illegal dredging.

LASU Dominates National Kickboxing Championship with 19 Medals Haul

The Lagos State University, LASU will reopen for academic and social activities on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, following the suspension of the industrial action by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Staff Unions.

The decision was announced after the university’s Senate meeting held on Monday, August 11, 2025. The development comes on the heels of JAC’s resolution to call off its strike after a productive meeting with Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

According to the Senate’s resolutions, students are to resume on August 13, with all university campuses in Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe reopening for both academic and social activities. Students residing in university hostels are expected to move in the same day.

The Second Semester Examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session, which were suspended due to the strike, will now commence on Monday, August 18, 2025.

It will be recalled that LASU’s Senate had suspended all academic and social activities on Saturday, August 2, 2025, following the strike action declared by JAC on July 31, 2025.

Lagos Begins E-Registration, Payment for 2026 UBE by CAS, Placement Test

The Lagos State Examinations Board has announced the commencement of the second phase of its screening test for the admission of primary six pupils into the state’s model colleges and upgraded junior secondary schools with boarding facilities for the 2025–2026 academic session.

The exercise, which is open to pupils from both public and private primary schools, will run from July 16 to August 16, 2025.

Successful applicants will gain entry into prestigious institutions such as Lagos State Model College, Meiran; Badagry Junior Grammar School, Badagry; Lagos State Model College, Ikorodu; Lagos State Model College, Kankon; and Epe Junior Grammar School, Epe, among others.

Vetland Junior Grammar School, Ifako-Ijaiye, is excluded from this year’s programme.

Director/Registrar of the Lagos State Examination Board, Mr. Orunsolu Adebayo said the entrance test will be conducted as a computer-based test on August 23, 2025, at the Public Service Staff Development Centre (PSSDC), Magodo, Lagos.

Applicants are required to pay a non-refundable application fee of ₦10,000 and register online via examsboard.lagostate.gov.ng, following the stated guidelines.

NIMC Upgrades Diaspora NIN Enrolment Platform for Seamless Service Delivery

NIMC Pushes Digital Public Infrastructure to Improve Service Delivery, National Security

The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC has announced the successful upgrade of its diaspora enrolment platform, aimed at enhancing efficiency, security, and overall service delivery for Nigerians living abroad.

According to the Commission, the upgraded platform will offer a more robust and seamless experience for National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment, while strengthening data security.

As part of the upgrade, NIMC has onboarded its Diaspora Front-End Partners (FEPs) onto the new system and provided intensive training to ensure effective management and application of the technology.

All Diaspora FEPs have been given 48 hours to obtain and activate their NIN enrolment licences on the upgraded system. Nigerians abroad can now access enrolment services from FEPs that have complied with the new requirements.

NIMC acknowledged that the upgrade process may have caused some inconveniences and has set up a dedicated service team to handle related complaints.

Diaspora applicants facing enrolment issues are urged to contact the Commission via nimccustomercare@nimc.gov.ng for prompt assistance.

Meanwhile, NIN enrolment continues across all centres in Nigeria, with details of the nearest locations available on the NIMC website. Both local and diaspora applicants can also modify their NIN data via the online self-service portal.

The Commission further encouraged NIN holders to download the NIMC NINAuth App from the iOS or Google Play Store to verify their NINs, control data access, and enjoy improved authentication services.

Soludo’s Executive Council Approves 2026–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework

In its ongoing regeneration drive, the Anambra State Executive Council, ANSEC has approved the rehabilitation of the Amichi-Osumenyi Road, which would be completed by the Anambra Road Maintenance Agency, ARMA.

The State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, stated that ANSEC awarded the contract to ARMA at the 17th Council meeting on 7th August, 2025, at the Light House Awka, together with other issues relating to the state’s development.

At the session, ANSEC also cautioned against the spread of misinformation and disinformation, urging citizens to rely on credible sources for information and to verify facts before sharing.

The Council’s decision aims to promote a peaceful and informed environment, particularly in the lead-up to the upcoming elections in Anambra State.

The move is also aimed at preventing the dissemination of fake news, which may have the potential to cause disorder in the state.

Recently, the Council approved the construction of the Nri-Agbanabo-Nimo Road, the Awka City Park Project, and the Solution Fun Club, designed to provide environmental, aesthetic, and recreational benefits to the state.

It also awarded the Ekwulobia to Nnobi Dualisation Road fourth dual carriageway Project, which completes the linking of the four major Anambra cities by dual carriageways, thereby completing the beltway to permit easy flow of traffic around the state.

In its effort at fostering a conducive business environment for investment purposes, the Council reviewed and approved the progress report for the 2024 Business Enabling Reforms Action Plan (BERAP).

Following the successful implementation of the flagship digital training programme, One-Youth-Two-Skills Scheme, ANSEC further approved Cohort Two of the scheme, with the execution process already in place.

This stems from the review of the success of Cohort One, where 7,163 out of 11,000 trainees excelled in 65 skill areas. Additionally, 235 apprentices from the Local Enterprise Development of 21 local governments in the state were successful, with over 1,000 millionaires emerging from the graduates.

NANS To Honour LASU VC Olatunji-Bello At 45th Anniversary

The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, has appealed to staff members to end their ongoing industrial action and return to work on Monday, August 11, 2025.

In an open letter to staff, Olatunji-Bello acknowledged the reasons behind the strike but urged acceptance of the Lagos State Government’s recent offers, describing them as part of the realities of negotiation.

“The longer we remain apart from our students and our work, the greater the ripple effect on our community, our young people, our reputation, and the very progress we have made together,” she said.

Since assuming office in September 2021, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted several welfare milestones achieved in collaboration with the Joint Action Committee, including prompt promotions, a 100% Christmas bonus for all staff, full payment of Earned Academic Allowances, priority employment and admission opportunities for staff family members and the recent implementation of the Federal Government-approved 25%/35% salary increase.

She urged staff to see themselves not as adversaries but as partners working towards the same vision for LASU, adding: “Please trust me when I say: I am for you, and will continue to work for your best interest.”

The strike has brought academic and administrative activities at LASU to a halt for the past two weeks.
