The Lagos State Security Trust Fund, LSSTF, has donated 2000 raincoats to the Nigerian Police Force, Lagos State Command. This contribution aims to enhance the officers’ ability to perform their duties effectively during the rainy season.
Admin Director, LSSTF, Mr. Adegbola Lewis, who represented the Executive Secretary and CEO, Dr. Abdurrazaq Balogun said the high-quality raincoats will provide essential protection and comfort, ensuring that the police can continue their work in maintaining law and order despite adverse weather conditions.

The Federation of Africa University Sports, FASU, on Friday, 16th August 2024, conducted its final inspection visit to facilities earmarked to host various sporting competitions at the Lagos State University, LASU, ahead the commencement of the 11th All Africa University Games, tagged Lagos 2024, slated to commence from 20th to 29th September, 2024.
The competition will, for the first time, be jointly hosted by two universities – Lagos State University, LASU, and the University of Lagos, UNILAG.
Friday’s inspection visit saw the presence of the top echelon of relevant university sporting bodies team up for the facilities inspection. The Secretary-General, of FASU, Ms Peninnah Kanenge, led the high-powered delegation, which also included the President, West African University Games, WAUG, Mr Ibrahim Tank Shuaibu, and the President, Nigerian University Games Association, NUGA, and Chairman, Organising Committee, Dr Bawa Mohammed.
The delegation touched the ground at about 9:20 a.m. and was received with funfair by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, and Alternate Chairman, LASU, Prof. Adenike Boyo and other Local Organising Committee members in front of the Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building and straightaway commenced the inspection.
At the Sports Centre, which was the first port of call, the officials inspected the newly upgraded basketball, volleyball, and handball courts before proceeding to inspect the field and the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall where some other indoor games would be hosted.
Next, the train moved to the students’ hostel where about 1800 athletes and officials are expected to be housed throughout the Games. Satisfied with the state of the hostels, the officials went on to tour the Femi Gbajabiamila Conference Centre, which has been earmarked to serve as the dining complex for participants.
Also inspected were the Academic Resource Centre, a magnificent four-storey edifice where some indoor games such as Chess, Judo, Karate, and Taekwondo are expected to be held, and the FASU Secretariat on the 5th floor of the Senate Building.
The visit was rounded up with a meeting between the delegation and the Local Organising Committee where the Alternate Chairman, Prof. Boyo briefed the delegation on the activities carried out so far while expressing LASU’s readiness to host the Games. She said, ‘I make bold to say that the two (2) institutions are united to ensure that the Games are not only successful but also a memorable and transformative experience for all participants’. She further appreciated FASU for entrusting the university with the responsibility of co-hosting the sporting fiesta.
In his remarks, the Chairman Organising Committee, Dr Mohammed, said he was impressed by the level of preparedness of LASU judging by the facilities inspected. In his words, ‘After our inspection, the two universities, especially LASU, did not fall our hands. We have seen more than we expected’… “I am happy to say that LASU did not fall our hands.”
The Chairman of the delegation, Ms Kanenge, could not hide her excitement at the level of preparation by the university. She said, ‘…from what we have seen so far, I am happy to inform you that preparations are going remarkably well; we are impressed with the level of commitment and involvement from top management of both universities. Your active participation has set the stage for what promises to be an extraordinary showcase of talent, sportsmanship, and African unity’ while adding that “… everything is on point.”
The President of WAUG, Mr Shuaibu, was also full of praises for the university, averring that LASU and Unilag are set to give West Africa a solid representation as hosts of the Games.
With just about 30 days to the commencement of the Games, the Lagos State University, under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, continues to rally stakeholders to host what the Vice-Chancellor promises to ‘be the best games ever’.
It is noteworthy that while the inspection was ongoing, the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee was leading a publicity rally at the Ikeja Campus and the main campus, Ojo, to create more awareness for the Games among members of the university community and the general public as a whole.
In a bid to address severe environmental pollution in vulnerable Lagos communities, a group of female engineers is spearheading an urgent call to action.
Led by Chairman of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, APWEN Lagos Chapter, Engr. Atinuke Wuraola Owolabi, FNSE, FNIEEE, these engineers will host a cholera sensitization event on Saturday, August 17, 2024, in the Ilaje, Ayetoro, and Makoko communities.
A recent pre-tour of these areas revealed alarming levels of environmental degradation, with heavily contaminated water sources and unsanitary conditions posing significant health risks to residents. The situation highlights the need for more than just cholera awareness, as the pollution has far-reaching effects on both the local population and the broader Lagos community.
Engr. Owolabi emphasized the importance of addressing these issues, noting that many of the engineers’ domestic staff, including cooks and drivers, live in these affected areas, making it a shared concern for all. She called on fellow engineers and the public to join the advocacy efforts, stressing that their collective presence and action could lead to meaningful change in the communities.
The upcoming event aims to raise awareness about the importance of cleaning the waterways and improving living conditions to prevent further health crises. The engineers hope that their initiative will inspire broader efforts to tackle environmental challenges in these and other vulnerable communities across Lagos.

Director General/Chief Executive Office of the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has reiterated the safety and protection of data in its National Identity Database, NIDB.
Coker-Odusote, who gave the reassurance as the country commemorates the National Civil Registration and Vital Statistics, CRVS Day, emphasized that NIMC has put in place top-notch security architects to protect the Citizens’ Data.
She assured that the Commission will ensure that the National Identification Number, NIN, Database is safe and secure.
The NIMC DG also commended the concerted efforts of the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, and the National Population Commission, NPC, towards an inclusive digital identity system in Nigeria.
She reiterated the strategic partnership with the NPC and other Government agencies to enroll and issue NIN to all Nigerians, particularly children below the age of 16 years, adding that NIMC plans to go to the hinterland to enroll all Nigerians
Furthermore, Engr. Coker-Odusote noted that over 109 million NINs have so far been issued to Nigerians and legal residents, amongst which children’s enrolment was 20 percent.
She, however, promised that the NIMC would ensure timely and accurate NIN enrolment of all Nigerians and legal residents within the shortest time possible.
Engr. Coker-Odusote used the occasion to inform Nigerians that the Improved General Multiple Purpose Card, GMPC, will be launched soon to support the Federal Government’s drive for inclusivity, social safety net program, and other programs targeted towards the Citizens.
A deadly confrontation between rival cult groups in Ogun State has resulted in the death of a man, believed to be a member of a local cult. The incident occurred late on the night of August 11, 2024, along Ijagun Road in Ijebu Ode.
According to reports, a concerned citizen alerted the police at around 11:40 p.m., informing them of an ongoing clash between suspected cultists. In response, the Divisional Police Officer swiftly dispatched a team to the scene.
Upon arrival, the Police discovered the lifeless body of a middle-aged man with multiple machete wounds and gunshot injuries. Disturbingly, the victim’s left hand had been severed and taken away. The deceased was later identified as “Mosquito,” a known member of the Aye confraternity.
Six expended cartridges were recovered from the scene while the body was transported to Ijebu Ode State Hospital, where the victim was pronounced dead and placed in the morgue.
The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident as authorities are working to apprehend the suspects who fled the scene and to understand the troubling pattern of mutilation linked to recent cult-related killings in the area.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Ogun State Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident and assured the public that efforts are ongoing to bring those responsible to justice.
The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has released the results for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, for School Candidates, 2024.
Head of WAEC, National Office Nigeria, Amos Dangut announced the results while briefing news men at the National Office of WAEC, Yaba Lagos.
Dangut explained that a total number of One Million, Eight Hundred and Five Thousand, Two Hundred and Sixteen candidates for the examination which spanned a period of seven weeks and six days from April thirty and June twenty-four, 2024.
He said out of the total number of candidates that sat the examination in Nigeria, One Million, Six Hundred and Eighty-Five Thousand, Eight Hundred and Eighty-Nine candidates, representing ninety three point three-nine percent have their results fully processed and released while One Hundred and Nineteen Thousand, Three Hundred and Twenty-Seven candidates, representing six point six one percent have one or more of their subjects still being processed due to some issues being resolved.
According to the Head of National Office, the analysis of statistics of candidates performance in the examination shows that One Million, Three Hundred and Thirty-Two Thousand and Eighty-Nine candidates, representing seventy-three point seven nine percent, obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects.
Dagnut added that One Million, Three Hundred and One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty-One candidates, representing seventy-two point one, two percent obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Wikimedia User Group Nigeria has named Barakat Adegboye as the Wikimedian in Residence for the “Wiki Re-Imagine Lagos” project. This initiative, a collaborative effort between the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Wikimedia Community, aims to enhance the visibility of Lagos through Wikimedia platforms.
Adegboye was selected from a pool of numerous qualified candidates, standing out for her impressive experience and a deep understanding of the project’s objectives. Her new role will involve close collaboration with the Lagos State Government, particularly the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Art, as well as the broader Nigeria Wikimedia Community.
She brings to bear a wealth of experience to this new position, having previously served as the Programmes Lead (intern) for the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria and is a member of the WUGN Grants Committee.
Her leadership roles also include serving as the General Secretary of the Wikimedia Fanclub at the University of Ilorin and leading communications at Africa Wiki Women. Additionally, she has spearheaded the Let’s Connect Peer Learning Programme in Kwara.
Adegboye’s facilitation skills have been evident in her involvement with various Wikimedia projects, including “Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom,” “1lib1ref,” “WikiLovesLibraries Nigeria,” “Celtic Knot Kwara,” and “Wikidata for Libraries.”
“Outside of her Wikimedia endeavors, Barakat serves as the Secretary of the Learnovation Network Foundation and is an enthusiast of photography and digital art”.
