Foundation to Mark 50th Anniversary of General Murtala Muhammed’s Assassination

The Murtala Muhammed Foundation, MMF, has announced a series of national and international commemorative activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of former Nigerian Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed (GCFR).

The golden anniversary, to be observed in February 2026, will provide an opportunity for national reflection on the enduring legacy of a leader whose brief but transformative tenure reshaped governance, restored discipline in the civil service, and positioned Nigeria as a principled advocate for justice, unity, and Pan-Africanism on the global stage.

Speaking on the significance of the milestone, the Chief Executive Officer of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, Dr. Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, said the commemoration is designed not only to honour General Muhammed’s legacy, but also to inspire future generations of leaders.

“Fifty years on, General Murtala Muhammed remains a moral compass for leadership in Africa,” she said. “His courage, clarity of purpose, intolerance for corruption, and unwavering belief in national unity are values Nigeria needs now more than ever. This anniversary is not just a remembrance; it is a call to action for a new generation of leaders to govern with integrity, patriotism, and courage.”

According to the Foundation, commemorative activities will commence on Monday, February 2, 2026, with a Legacy Art Exhibition at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Lagos.

The exhibition, which will run through February 28, will feature visual art, archival materials, and contemporary interpretations highlighting General Muhammed’s life, leadership philosophy, and enduring influence.

On February 5, Lagos will also host a Strategic Policy Workshop in partnership with the NIIA, focusing on General Muhammed’s role in redefining Nigeria’s foreign policy, particularly his principled Pan-African stance and commitment to African liberation and solidarity.

Remembrance activities will continue on February 6 with an official wreath-laying ceremony in Lagos, followed by a special Juma’at prayer and graveside observance in Kano. A welcome reception and commemorative dinner celebrating defining moments of General Muhammed’s leadership will hold on February 11.

The programme will move to Abuja on February 12 with an International Memorial Lecture and Leadership Conference, bringing together local and global thought leaders to examine General Muhammed’s leadership philosophy, anti-corruption drive, and vision for a just, disciplined, and self-reliant Nigeria.

The anniversary date, February 13, will be marked by solemn activities in Abuja, including a wreath-laying ceremony, commemorative Juma’at prayer, an Anti-Corruption Day, and a National Moment of Silence to be observed across the country.

The commemorations will conclude on February 15 with an interdenominational thanksgiving service, reflecting General Muhammed’s commitment to national unity across faiths and communities.

Dr. Muhammed-Oyebode noted that the programmes underscore the continued relevance of General Muhammed’s ideals in contemporary Nigeria.

“General Muhammed believed deeply in the dignity of public service, decisive leadership, and national renewal,” she said. “Through these activities, we are ensuring that his vision continues to inspire future generations to serve with integrity, patriotism, and purpose.”

The Murtala Muhammed Foundation has invited Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, international partners, civil society organisations, and the media to participate in the commemorative events and join in celebrating a leader whose vision continues to inspire courage, accountability, and a renewed sense of national purpose.

OOLI Congratulates Adm. (Dr) Deji Bolusemihi on Appointment as Chairman, CIA College of Fellows

The Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute, OOLI, has congratulated Adm. (Dr) Deji Patricks Bolusemihi, FCIA, on his appointment as Chairman of the College of Fellows of the Chartered Institute of Administration, CIA of Nigeria.

Dr. Bolusemihi’s appointment was approved by the Governing Council of the Chartered Institute of Administration and takes effect from January 5, 2026.

In an official communication, the Governing Council stated that the appointment is aimed at providing strong strategic leadership for the College of Fellows, as well as ensuring effective management of its affairs and resources in line with its constitutional mandate.

The Council also commended Dr. Bolusemihi’s longstanding commitment to professional excellence and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the College with distinction.

Dr. Bolusemihi brings to the role a wealth of experience spanning accounting, insurance, oil and gas, banking, telecommunications, risk management consulting, and diplomacy. His academic background includes studies at the University of Lagos and the University of Ilorin, as well as a doctorate from the Swiss School of Business and Management, Geneva.

A highly respected professional, he is a fellow and member of several reputable institutions, including the Chartered Institute of Insurance of Nigeria, Chartered Institute of Arbitration (UK), Chartered Risk Management Institute, Chartered Institute of Directors of Nigeria, Chartered Institute of Marketing (UK), and Certified Management Consultants.

He also holds fellowships with the Africa Business School, Commonwealth Academy of Leadership and Management (UK), Africa Institute of Information Management, Institute of Fraud Examiners, Nigerian Institute of Management, Chartered Institute of Peace and Governance (USA), and the Chartered Institute of Administration, among others.

Reacting to the appointment, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of OOLI, Prof. Samuel Daramola, described the development as well deserved.

Ogun Police Dismiss Curfew Rumours, Assure Residents of Safety

The Ogun State Police Command has intensified enforcement against vehicles operating with illegal number plates, the misuse of dealer (temporary) plates, and the unauthorised use of sirens and amber lights across the state.

The renewed enforcement drive, the Command said, is aimed at safeguarding lives, preventing crime, and enhancing public safety.

Acting on credible intelligence, police officers have commenced intelligence-led checks on vehicles bearing fake, altered, covered, invalid, or improperly affixed number plates, as well as those unlawfully using dealer plates.

According to the Command, such vehicles are frequently exploited by criminals to facilitate illegal activities, posing significant threats to public safety.

Suspected offenders are being identified, arrested, and prosecuted in line with existing laws, while the operation is designed to proactively disrupt criminal networks and improve road safety.

To ensure professionalism and strict compliance with operational guidelines, specialised units including the Motor Traffic Department, Monitoring Unit, and the X-Squad have been deployed to provide oversight.

Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers are also supervising enforcement activities within their respective jurisdictions to guarantee fairness, transparency, and accountability.

The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement officers, obey traffic and safety regulations, and refrain from patronising suspicious vehicles.

He also advised residents to use only recognised motor parks and designated pick-up points.

Ogunlowo reassured the public that the enforcement exercise is not intended to harass law-abiding citizens but to prevent crime, maintain public order, and protect lives, while respecting the rights and dignity of all road users.

WCO, World Bank Train Nigeria Customs Officers on Post-Clearance Audit

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, in partnership with the World Customs Organisation, WCO and the World Bank Group, WBG, has commenced the WCO Accelerate Trade Facilitation Programme aimed at strengthening Post-Clearance Audit, PCA, and enhancing trade facilitation in Nigeria.

The programme, which began on Monday, January 19, 2026, is designed to review agreed reform objectives, assess progress, and identify practical steps to improve efficiency, transparency, and risk-based compliance management within customs operations.

Speaking at the opening session, the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs, Kikelomo Adeola, who represented the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, described Post-Clearance Audit as a core component of modern customs administration.

She noted that an effective PCA framework promotes voluntary compliance, supports informed risk management, and facilitates legitimate trade while safeguarding revenue.

“This mission reflects the strong partnership between the WCO and the Nigeria Customs Service and our shared commitment to strengthening PCA frameworks and institutionalising global best practices,” she said, adding that the Service has deliberately chosen to entrench PCA as a functional compliance tool.

WCO Trade Facilitation Expert, James Clark, commended the NCS for the progress recorded in implementing trade facilitation reforms, particularly the development and operationalisation of the PCA Manual.

“What has been achieved within a short period is impressive. While there is still work ahead, the commitment shown so far is commendable,” he said.

Also speaking, the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs in charge of Tariff and Trade, Caroline Niagwan, said the Service has taken deliberate steps to strengthen audit and risk management systems to enhance compliance, improve revenue generation, and protect Nigeria’s economic interests.

The Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs in charge of Post-Clearance Audit, Babatunde Olomu, described the week-long programme as timely, noting that it would further build institutional capacity in audit-driven compliance and trade facilitation.

The WCO Accelerate Trade Facilitation Programme runs from January 19 to 23, 2026, and reinforces the Nigeria Customs Service’s commitment to customs modernisation through collaboration with international partners.

The Kebbi Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has held its first parade of the 2026 operational year, charging officers to uphold discipline, integrity and professionalism while recommitting to the Service’s core mandate of border security and trade facilitation.

The parade, which brought together officers and men of the Command, also featured a comprehensive medical screening for personnel, underscoring the Command’s focus on officers’ welfare and operational readiness.

Addressing the parade, the Area Comptroller, Ibrahim MM MNIM, fdc, thanked God for life and unity and extended New Year greetings to officers and their families. He paid tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, offering prayers for their repose and comfort for their families.

The Comptroller commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, PhD, for his leadership and commitment to professionalism, discipline and officers’ welfare, noting that his vision continues to strengthen the Service nationwide.

He described the parade as a moment of reflection and recommitment, urging officers to remain loyal, vigilant and dedicated to securing Nigeria’s borders, preventing smuggling and economic sabotage, and facilitating legitimate trade and revenue generation.

The Comptroller reminded officers to uphold the NCS “7Cs” Courtesy without loss of dignity, Clear questions, Careful examination, Clean hands, Command attention, Control situations and Consult colleagues, stressing that discipline remains the bedrock of the Service. He warned that negligence and misconduct would not be tolerated, while diligence and excellence would be recognised.

Given Kebbi Command’s strategic location along international borders with Niger and Benin Republics, the Comptroller charged officers to remain security-conscious, improve intelligence gathering and strengthen collaboration with sister agencies, host communities and other stakeholders to address security challenges along border corridors.

He also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, including borehole projects and installation of solar-powered streetlights in border communities, aimed at improving living conditions and enhancing security.

As part of the parade activities, officers underwent a medical check-up to ensure physical and mental fitness for duty. The Comptroller noted that a healthy workforce is critical to effective border protection and trade facilitation.

Dangote Industries Limited, DIL, has unveiled an ambitious Vision 2030 strategy aimed at accelerating Africa’s industrialisation, boosting economic self-sufficiency and empowering the continent’s next generation.

President of the Group, Aliko Dangote, said the long-term strategy is focused on building Africa’s capacity to feed itself, power its economy and develop its people in a sustainable manner.

Outlining the Group’s expansion roadmap, Dangote disclosed that Dangote Cement is targeting an increase in production capacity to about 90 million tonnes by 2030, a move he said would position the company among the world’s most competitive cement producers.

“Our ambition goes far beyond building factories,” Dangote said. “We are building the structures that will enable Africa to feed itself, power its industries, and equip its people for long-term prosperity.”

He explained that under the Vision 2030 framework, the Group plans to transform Dangote Industries Limited into a 100-billion-dollar enterprise through sustained industrial expansion, cross-border investments and strengthened independence in key sectors such as energy, manufacturing and infrastructure.

Dangote further revealed plans to expand the Group’s petroleum refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day, while the fertiliser plant is expected to scale up to 12 million metric tonnes per annum. He added that the cement business is on track to reach 90 million tonnes by 2030, representing about 50 percent more than the total cement output of Saudi Arabia.

According to him, Vision 2030 aligns with the Group’s “Africa First” mission, driven by the belief that Africa’s future must be built by Africans who are willing to challenge limits and pursue bold ambitions.

As part of efforts to develop African talent, Dangote announced the establishment of a ₦1 trillion education fund in December 2025, describing it as a major investment in young Africans who will drive the continent’s transformation.

“Empowering the next generation is essential for building the Africa we envision,” he said, adding that the initiative underscores the Group’s long-term commitment to human capital development across the continent.

President Bola Tinubu has commended the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, describing his tenure as one marked by impactful reforms and sustained institutional transformation.

According to the President, “the ongoing transformation within the Service reflects purposeful leadership and a deliberate drive to position Nigeria Customs as a model institution in Africa and beyond.”

He added that Adeniyi’s leadership has also enhanced community relations, ensured consistent surpassing of revenue targets, strengthened trade partnerships with countries and multilateral institutions, and improved security across Nigeria’s borders, noting that these achievements underscore the value of reform-oriented leadership in strengthening national economic resilience.
