LASU VICE CHANCELLOR FELICITATES MUSLIM FAITHFUL ON COMMENCEMENT OF RAMADAN FAST

Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University, LASU, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has felicitated with Muslim Faithful on the commencement of the Ramadan fast.

Olatunji-Bello said: “My dear colleagues and world-class students welcome to the Holy Month of Ramadan.

As we embark on the journey of this blessed month, I extend warm greetings and heartfelt wishes of Ramadan Kareem to all our Muslim brothers and sisters in the Lagos State University community. “

She noted that the 29/30 days of Ramadan is a dedicated  period of fasting, prayer, and self-discipline, where Muslim faithful seek to deepen their connection with Allah and draw closer to fellow human beings.


“As we do these, let us remember the values of compassion, empathy, and generosity that lie at the heart of Ramadan.

Let us remember those who are less fortunate and strive to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Let us also embrace the spirit of unity and understanding that Ramadan embodies, even in our differences, so that we can continue to live in peace and oneness. “

The VC urged Muslim Faithful to use this holy month to commit the university, Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole into the hand of the Almighty Allah, so that all enjoy peace and prosperity in their individual and corporate lives.

NAPPS NIGERIA EXTENDS SYMPATHIES OVER ABDUCTION OF STUDENTS, TEACHERS IN CHIKUN LGA OF KADUNA STATE

The National Executive Council, NEC of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, NAPPS Nigeria, has extended its deepest sympathies to the state government, school management, and families affected by the abduction of students and staff from LGEA Primary School, Kuriga village, Chikun LGA, Kaduna State.


In a statement signed its National President, Chief Yomi Otubela National Secretary and Comrade Augustine Ajibade, NAPPS Nigeria said the news of the heinous incident, where 232 students and teachers were reportedly kidnapped by suspected terrorists, has left the Association in profound sorrow.

“Our thoughts are with the families enduring this unimaginable pain and the entire school community grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event.

We stand united in urging the federal government of Nigeria to take immediate and decisive action to secure the swift release of the abducted individuals.

It is imperative that all necessary measures are implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of the innocent lives in jeopardy.”

NAPPS Nigeria also called on the government to intensify security measures around schools nationwide.

“The safety of our children and educators should be of paramount concern, and steps must be taken to prevent such traumatic incidents from occurring in the future.

In this challenging time, we extend our solidarity and support to the affected families, the school management, and the entire community.

We further pray that strength and resilience prevail as we collectively strive for a swift resolution and a safer future for our educational institutions.”

LASU DELEGATES SHINE AT 1ST AFRICAN TRANSPORT RESEARCH CONFERENCE IN CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

The Lagos State University delegates have been highly commended and honoured at the maiden edition of the Transport Research Conference (ATR -2024) recently concluded in Cape Town, South Africa.

The first-ever African Transport Research Conference (ATR-2024) brought together a wealth of interesting and relevant opportunities to advance transport research and solutions in and for Africa in a beautiful, world-class conference setting in Cape Town, South Africa.

The organiser, the Centre for Transport Studies of the University of Cape Town was in partnership with the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF).

The conference which was opened to researchers worldwide who work on African transport in their scholarly activities, held between Tuesday, 5th and Thursday, 7th March 2024, at the Graduate Business School, University of Cape Town, South Africa.

LASU VC, OTHERS ATTEND WACREN 2024

Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University, LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and some senior members of staff have represented the university at the WACREN 2024 held in Abuja.

WACREN is a platform for African research and education institutions and their communities to discuss how to evolve and adapt to the ongoing changes in the technological space.

WACREN 2024 Conference with the theme: ”Charting The Course: Forging Future-Ready Higher Education and Research Communities”, provided an opportunity for officials of LASU to network with local and foreign counterparts to attract numerous benefits to the university.

According to the Director, of DICT, Prof. Toyin Enikuomehin, who was also at the conference, hosted by the Nigerian Research and Education Network, NgREN, one of the benefits of the engagement was the selection of Lagos State University for immediate deployment of cloud solutions.

With this selection, staff and students will begin to enjoy the Nigerian Research and Education Network, ngREN initiated eduroam, which will enhance research and teaching in the institution.

NAWOJ, WIKIMEDIA NIGERIA FOUNDATION TO AMPLIFY WOMEN’S NARRATIVES IN MEDIA LANDSCAPES, OTHER SECTORS

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ Lagos State Chapter and the Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation have expressed dedication to ensure women’s narratives are accurately represented in the media landscape.

Chairperson, NAWOJ, Lagos State Chapter, Adeola Ekine made this known during a symposium to commemorate the 2024 International Women’s Day which is celebrated on March eight every year.

Ekine who was represented by the Vice Chairperson, Bunmi Yekini noted that from editing Wikipedia articles to creating and sharing content that highlights women’s achievements, there are countless ways in which both organisations can collaborate to inspire inclusion and promote diversity in the digital sphere.

She urged stakeholders to recommit themselves to the advancement of gender equality and the empowerment of women, work together to inspire inclusion in all aspects of society, from the media industry to the online world.

On his part, President of the Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation, Olusola Olaniyan explained that the partnership with NAWOJ is borne out of the need to train and amplify the voices of women in all sectors, spaces and most importantly in the media.

Olaniyan, who said the intended training will be supported by the Swedish Embassy, noted that working with professional bodies such as NAWOJ will ensure that only credible information are made available to Nigerians.

‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress’ is the theme for the 2024 International Women’s Day, with an emphasis on tackling women’s economic disempowerment.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, has received with delight, news of the appointment of a member of staff of the University, Mr. Samuel Olawale Kappo, as the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu on Tertiary Education.

The governor announced Mr. Kappo’s appointment during an interaction with student representatives on Tuesday, 5th of March 2024.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello, on behalf of the entire University community, congratulates Mr. Kappo on his well-deserved appointment, while describing it as an eloquent recognition of his dedication, passion, and commitment to the betterment of students in tertiary institutions in the state.

She expresses utmost confidence in his ability to robustly discharge the duties of the office of the Senior Special Assistant, going by his antecedents as a student leader and public servant.

The VC also prays that God would grant him the wisdom to succeed and, in the process, pave the way for more young people to be equally elevated.

Mr. Kappo, a graduate of Computer Science, from the prestigious Lagos State University, was president of the Lagos State Students Union (LASUSU) in the 2016/2017 academic session and later served as the Southwest coordinator of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) between 2019 and 2021

He currently works as a systems analyst at the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) of LASU.

NIGERIA AIRFORCE TRAINER AIRCRAFT IN MINOR MISHAP

A Nigerian Air Force, NAF, Super Mushshak trainer aircraft has been involved in a minor mishap.

In a statement signed by the Director of Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal, Edward Gabkwet, NAF confirmed that the incident happened on the 7th of March 2024, at about 2.35 pm.

According to the statement, the accident, which occurred at about 3.5 nautical miles from Kaduna Military Airfield, involved 2 pilots who were returning from a routine training flight.

Luckily, both pilots came out of the crash unscathed.

It added that the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has since called for a preliminary investigation to ascertain the immediate cause of the crash.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC has extended an invitation to persons with creative ideas on how technology and digital innovations can support wildlife conservation in Nigeria to join its ”Be Wild For Nature” competition.

In a statement via its website, UNODC said participants stand a chance to win a Laptop, Tablet, or Smartphone depending on the category or ranking of their ideas.

UNODC also said participants are to share a creative idea on how technology and digital innovation can support wildlife conservation in Nigeria.

BREAKING NEW: LASU BOTTLE WATER GETS NAFDAC APPROVAL

The last hurdle for the production and sales of Lagos State University, LASU Table Water has been crossed with the approval of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC.

The approval number is A1-105343.

The NAFDAC approval was secured following an on-site inspection of facilities of the LASU Water Plant earlier this year. 

With the NAFDAC approval and allocation of number, the LASU Water Plant under the management of LASU Ventures will commence the production and distribution of the Table Water to vendors in the university community and its environs.

House of Reps Committee To Issue Arrest Warrant Against Binance Executives

The House of Representatives Committee on Financial Crimes has resolved to issue a warrant of arrest against executives of the cryptocurrency platform, Binance, for failing to appear before it for an investigation.

Chairman of the Committee, Ginger Onwusibe, stated that the warrant of arrest is to compel the executives to appear before the lawmakers to answer on allegations of sponsoring of terrorism, and financial crimes.

A lawyer, who appeared before the committee on behalf of Binance presented a written address, stating that the board of the company is scared of coming to Nigeria for fear of further arrest by the government.

However, the explanation by the lawyer was rejected by the lawmakers.

Two Binance executives were arrested in Nigeria last week, and the government is demanding almost 10 billion dollars in compensation from the cryptocurrency firm on allegations of manipulation of foreign exchange rates which has negatively affected the value of the naira.
