The Lagos State University, LASU has announced the commencement of its Indigeneship Verification Exercise for candidates of Lagos State origin seeking admission for the 2026/2027 academic session.

In a notice issued by the institution, registration for the exercise began on Monday, April 27, 2026, and will close on Friday, May 22, 2026.

The exercise is open to candidates who selected LASU as their first choice in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and scored a minimum of 195.

The university emphasized that participation in the Indigeneship Verification Exercise is mandatory for candidates of Lagos State origin but does not guarantee admission into the institution.

According to the schedule released, the screening will be conducted in four phases between April 27 and May 22, 2026.

Candidates are required to complete their registration and payment online via the university’s official portal.

The institution stated that only candidates of Lagos State origin are eligible and must be cleared by the Independent Indigeneship Verification Committee before being considered for admission.

Screening interviews will take place across designated centres in the five divisions of the state.

These include venues in Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe.

The university also directed applicants from previous admission cycles, specifically the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 sessions who were not offered admission, to revalidate their indigeneship clearance certificates online.

In addition, all Direct Entry candidates of Lagos State origin are required to participate in the exercise before they can be considered for admission.

LASU cautioned applicants against making payments to unauthorized individuals or accounts, stressing that all transactions must be carried out through the official university platform.

Fidelity Bank Extends “Give Her Power” Initiative to Ikorodu

Fidelity Bank Plc, has expanded its flagship women empowerment programme, “Give Her Power,” to Ikorodu, equipping over 30 women with vocational tools to boost their businesses and improve household income.

The Ikorodu outreach, which represents the third phase of the initiative’s nationwide rollout, saw beneficiaries receive 12 sewing machines and 15 grinding machines, among other items.

The recipients were drawn from Ikorodu Central, Ikorodu West, and Ikorodu North Local Government Areas.

Speaking at the event, the bank’s Regional Bank Head, Victoria Island, Nnamdi Edekobi, who represented the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, said the initiative is designed to deliver meaningful and sustainable empowerment.

He noted that the programme goes beyond symbolic gestures by providing women with the tools and resources needed to build viable businesses, generate income, and create opportunities for their families.

Also speaking, the Divisional Head, Brand and Communication at Fidelity Bank, Meksley Nwagboh, described the Ikorodu outreach as a strategic intervention focused on underserved women at the grassroots level.

He added that the initiative would be expanded to other regions, including the South-East, South-South, and Northern Nigeria, to ensure broader inclusion in economic opportunities.

“When women are empowered financially, the ripple effect is felt across families, communities, and the broader national economy,” he said.

The “Give Her Power” initiative was initially launched in Lagos through partnerships with organisations such as LUSH Hair, Barbergirl Academy School of Barbering, Dee ‘n’ Ell the Shoe Architect, Inter-Bau Foundation, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, National Credit Guarantee Company, and One Universe.

The programme is anchored on the bank’s HerFidelity Apprenticeship Programme, which offers vocational training, mentorship, business support, and access to enterprise opportunities.

Before the Ikorodu activation, the initiative was held in Abeokuta, where 100 women received 50 sewing machines and 50 grinding machines at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena.

The Ikorodu event drew key government and community stakeholders, including the Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, Adedayo Ladega; Executive Chairman of Ikorodu West LCDA, Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju; and Executive Chairman of Imota LCDA, Benson Sunday Ayodele.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Hassan Bukola from Ikorodu North LCDA, expressed appreciation for the support, describing it as life-changing and a boost to her business and family welfare.

Fidelity Bank said the successful rollout in Ikorodu underscores its commitment to scaling the “Give Her Power” initiative nationwide as a driver of women’s economic empowerment and sustainable community development.

The examination, which began on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, is scheduled to run until April 30, marking a crucial stage for applicants who successfully passed the earlier screening processes.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, the Command assured the public and candidates of its commitment to maintaining a transparent, credible, and orderly process throughout the exercise.

Candidates participating in the examination have been advised to arrive early at the venue and adhere strictly to the approved dress code of white shorts, white T-shirt, and white canvas.

They are also required to present their printed invitation cards along with their National Identification Number (NIN) slips for verification.

The visit, which included the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Bolanle Muritala, and Area Commander, Ifo, Seyi Williams, featured a strategic meeting with key stakeholders, including the Vice Chancellor, Ayodeji Johnson Agboola; the Provost of the College of Engineering and Environmental Sciences, Bashir Olufemi Odufuwa; and the Olu of Ibogun-Sowumi, Timothy Sowumi.

Also present were members of the institution’s management, community leaders, and representatives of the Student Union Government, who highlighted pressing security concerns affecting both the campus and surrounding areas.

Stakeholders collectively called for coordinated and practical solutions to address the challenges.

Responding, CP Ojajuni assured that the Command would immediately strengthen security presence around the university and adjoining communities through increased patrols and proactive policing strategies.

A major outcome of the visit was the announcement of the establishment of a police post within the university community to improve rapid response, enhance visibility, and deepen community policing efforts.

The police boss also engaged other security outfits, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun Corps, and So-Safe Corps, to strengthen inter-agency collaboration in securing the area.

During the visit, Ojajuni also inspected the Ibogun Divisional Police Headquarters, where he assessed operational readiness and issued directives to officers aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery.

He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to community policing, sustained stakeholder engagement, and enhanced collaboration among security agencies to maintain peace and security across Ogun State.

Family Announces Passing of Madam Grace Olabisi Olugbodi at 83

The Olugbodi family of Ara Kingdom in Egbedore Local Government Area of Osun State has announced the passing of their matriarch, Grace Olabisi Olugbodi, fondly known as “Extraordinary Grace,” at the age of 83.

According to the family, she passed away on April 18, 2026, just one week after the burial of her husband of over 65 years, J.O. Olugbodi, who was laid to rest on April 11, 2026.

In a statement, the family described the late Olugbodi as a woman of deep faith, resilience, and compassion, who dedicated her life to raising her children and supporting many others within and beyond her immediate family.

“She lived a life of extraordinary grace, bringing up eight boys and one girl, and serving as a mother, sister, and friend to many,” the statement read.

The family noted that she was a pillar in her Christian community, remembered for her service, devotion, and unwavering commitment to her faith.

Her son, Tunji Olugbodi, an advertising and media executive, described her passing as both a moment of grief and gratitude.

“Though we mourn, we rejoice that she is now resting peacefully in the bosom of her Maker, reunited with her husband. She was indeed an extraordinary blessing,” he said.

Funeral arrangements released by the family indicate that a Service of Songs and Tributes will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Union Baptist Church, Osogbo, while the funeral service and interment will take place at First Baptist Church, Ara Kingdom, on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

She is survived by her children, grandchildren, siblings, and extended family members.

Dangote made the disclosure over the weekend in Lagos during his induction as an Honorary Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, describing the project as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s industrial development.

According to him, the expansion reflects the Group’s commitment to engineering excellence, job creation, and sustainable economic growth.

“This award is particularly meaningful because it recognizes what we are doing in the industry, especially our commitment to employing engineers and skilled professionals. At the peak of construction for this expansion, we expect to have about 95,000 skilled workers on site, and we will continue to grow,” Dangote said.

He noted that upon completion, the expanded refinery would surpass India’s Jamnagar Refinery to become the largest refinery in the world, significantly boosting Nigeria’s refining capacity.

Dangote added that the project would rely heavily on local expertise, creating opportunities for engineers, technicians, and artisans, while advancing the country’s industrialisation agenda.

Beyond job creation, the expansion is expected to stimulate local manufacturing, encourage technology transfer, and deepen Nigeria’s oil and gas value chain. It is also projected to improve fuel security, reduce reliance on petroleum imports, and deliver substantial foreign exchange savings.

“The scale of this expansion reflects our confidence in Nigerian capacity and our belief that Africa can build world-class infrastructure that meets global standards,” he added.

In his remarks, President of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, Rahamon Bello, described the honour as well deserved, noting that Dangote’s impact extends beyond infrastructure development.

He said the industrialist’s achievements continue to inspire a new generation of engineers and entrepreneurs to pursue innovation and bold ideas across the continent.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Command clarified that the footage did not originate from Ogun State or any part of Nigeria, but was instead recorded in Kenya during an operation involving cattle rustlers.

According to the Command, preliminary findings and credible fact-checks revealed that the video, showing individuals cooking in a bush setting, was captured by a General Service Unit (GSU) drone and first uploaded online in 2022 before being recirculated with a false narrative to misinform the public.

The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, condemned the spread of the video, warning that such unverified content could create unnecessary panic and erode public trust in security agencies.

He stressed that there is no intelligence or operational report indicating the presence of armed bandits in any forest or location within Ogun State.

Ojajuni reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to maintaining security through intelligence-led policing, strategic deployments, and sustained surveillance across the state.

He urged members of the public to disregard the viral video and avoid sharing unverified information capable of inciting fear or disrupting public peace, advising citizens to rely on official communication channels for accurate updates.

The police chief also encouraged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through designated emergency lines, while warning that the spread of false and inciting information would not be tolerated.
