The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, has expressed its readiness to commence the debut edition of Eko Flavours Junior, a dynamic and exciting culinary competition, in May.
Eko Flavours Junior being organised by Culinara, Nigeria’s leading culinary platform, in partnership with Lagos State Government, is designed to inspire, educate, and showcase the immense talent of young chefs across Lagos State.
The competition according to a statement issued on Friday by the co-CEOs of Culinara, Mrs. Olufunke Adu and Mrs. Jennifer Odufuwa, “this unique competition will provide an engaging platform for school-aged children to explore the art of cooking, celebrate Nigeria’s rich food culture, and compete at the highest level for the coveted title of Eko Flavours Junior Champion.”
They said: “Unlike the Eko Flavours Senior, Eko Flavours Junior takes a district-based competition approach, ensuring wide participation and fostering a competitive yet fun experience.”
Adu and Odufuwa disclosed that the competition will unfold in two key phases – Preliminary District Competitions, which will start in the first week of May, and Grand Finale, scheduled for July 22.
They said: “For the Preliminary District Competitions, schools across Lagos State’s six educational districts will compete in thrilling cook-offs to determine the top young chefs from each region, with each school represented by two students.
“The Grand Finale will take place on July 22, 2025, at Onikan Stadium, Lagos. The two representatives from each of the six district champions will go head-to-head in a high-stakes culinary showdown where one outstanding school team will be crowned the first-ever Eko Flavours Junior Champion.
“For the Ultimate Junior Champion, one standout team will emerge as the Eko Flavours Junior Champion, earning recognition, prizes, and opportunities for further culinary development.
“The grand finale at Onikan Stadium will be a spectacular food festival, featuring food showcases, entertainment, and a thrilling culinary showdown.”
The statement also noted that “Eko Flavours Junior is more than a competition; it’s an initiative designed to foster early culinary education and appreciation for food as an art and career; encourage teamwork, discipline, and creativity in young chefs; promote Nigeria’s food culture and sustainability practices among the younger generation; and provide a launching pad for future culinary stars.
“During the competition, young talents will be on display as people are expected to witness the passion, creativity, and skills of young chefs as they prepare dishes under time-bound, themed challenges.

The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, MWAPA has held its first management meeting with the newly appointed Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Rianat ‘Jibike Onigbanjo, marking a significant transition in the leadership of the Ministry.
The Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia, officially welcomed the Permanent Secretary, offering prayers for divine guidance in her new role.
She further encouraged the management and staff of the ministry to extend the same level of cooperation and dedication to Mrs. Onigbanjo as they did to her predecessor, ensuring a smooth and productive working relationship.

LASWA LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION INTO FERRY INFERNO AT IPAKODO FERRY TERMINAL
The Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, has assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire that occurred aboard the Igbega Eko vessel in the early hours of Thursday, April 3rd, 2025, at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal, Ikorodu.
LASWA also said safety measures are being reviewed and implemented to prevent future occurrences.
The Agency made this known while providing an update on the nine individuals injured in the fire outbreak.
According to LASWA, all affected individuals, including passengers, LASWA personnel and LAGFERRY staff are receiving medical treatment and showing significant improvement.
”Six of the injured are currently being treated at the General Hospital in Ikorodu, where medical personnel are closely monitoring their recovery. Meanwhile, three others are receiving stable care at a private hospital. Fortunately, no life-threatening conditions have been reported.”
LASWA also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the well-being of all affected individuals, stating that it is working closely with medical teams to provide the necessary support.
“We commend the swift response of emergency services and appreciate the cooperation of the public during this period,” LASWA stated. “Our priority remains the safety of all waterway users.”

Ogun Police Command Enhances Security at Sagamu Interchange, Assures Citizens of Safety
The Ogun State Police Command has intensified security measures at the four intersections of the Sagamu Interchange to ensure the safety of residents and commuters.
This follows recent concerns over security in the area, including reports circulating on social media about an incident on the 21st of March, 2025.
While no such incident was formally reported at any police station, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, PhD, has proactively led efforts to reinforce security at the Sagamu interchange.
As part of these measures, personnel from the Quick Response Squad, OP Mesa, and Mobile Police Squadrons 71 have been strategically stationed at key locations, including under the bridge, at the roundabouts, and along the inward and outward routes of the four intersections.
A two-hour assement of the area conducted by the Commissioner of Police, revealed illegal trading activities and presence of touts. Earlier in the day, a criminal hideout was discovered in surrounding bush at the interchange and three suspects were arrested.
Thereafter An immediate disbandment of illegal trading activities under the interchanged bridge was carried out
To further enhance security at the interchange the Commissioner of Police has engaged members of the transport Union to redirect traffic towards well-lit and secure areas.
While Ogun State remains relatively peaceful, the police command urges citizens to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to criminal activities.
As a precautionary measure, commuters are advised to plan their travels early to minimize security risks.
With increased security presence, collaborative efforts of sister security agencies, and continued support of his excellency , the governor of Ogun State, citizens are assured of the safety of our highways.

Access Bank Plc, a leading financial institution in Nigeria, has partnered “PAD Me A Girl Initiative,” a project of GATMASH MEDIA, to launched a ‘Pad Bank’ at Area 1, Internally Displaced Persons Camp, IDP, Durumi, Abuja.
The launching which took place on 3rd April, 2025, is a project of GATMASH MEDIA, aimed at providing free sanitary pads to girls and women.
Theresa Moses, the Convener of the “PAD Me A Girl Initiative,” in her welcome remarks emphasized the importance of menstrual hygiene while encouraging young girls and women to prioritize their health.
She observed that this initiative marks a significant milestone in promoting menstrual hygiene and providing reusable sanitary pads to young girls and women in need.
Highlighting the alarming statistics of menstrual poverty in Nigeria, she disclosed that about 37% of menstruating girls and women lack access to sanitary pads due to financial constraints.
According to Theresa Moses, the project would help to educate young girls and women on proper menstrual hygiene practices, while dispelling various myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation.
“The ‘PAD Bank’ will provide reusable sanitary pads, reducing waste and promoting sustainability while making menstrual products more accessible for free.
“The initiative seeks to break the silence surrounding menstruation, encouraging open conversations and promoting a culture of understanding and support,” Theresa Moses reiterated.
On her part, Mrs. Blessing Jonah Amos, Parenting Coach, led an informative session on menstrual hygiene, usage of reusable sanitary pads, and healthy lifestyle practices.
The Divisional Police Officer, Area 1, CSP Ola Rotimi Ebidero, provided valuable security tips to women and young girls, urging them to report suspicious activities to the police.
The Access “PAD Me A Girl Initiative” has partnership with several organizations, including Checkers Custard which distributed Checkers Custard and Checkers Custard Pap Flavour, Vita Baites Foods markers of delicious and crunchy ‘kuli-kuli’ which distributed their products and Jeffrey Kuraun Foundation, ProStar, and more.
Exercise books and other writing materials, cartons of Instant noodles, bags of sachets water were among the items distributed during the exercise.

LAGFERRY GIVES UPDATE ON FIRE INCIDENT AT IPAKODO TERMINAL,PASSENGERS’ CONDITION
The Lagos State Ferry Services, LAGFERRY has confirmed a report of a fire incident involving one of its boats, Igbega Eko, at the Ipakodo Terminal in Ikorodu.
Preliminary reports indicate that the fire started about 6.45a.m on Thursday.
Director, Public Affairs Unit of LAGFERRY, Akeem Odusina explained that there were 19 passengers on board. He said the inferno started after passengers had boarded the boat to depart the terminal.
According to Odusina, all passengers were rescued alive. Nine of them who, unfortunately, sustained burn injuries are receiving medical attention at the Ikorodu General Hospital, where they will be treated free of charge.
He noted that emergency protocols were promptly activated at the scene.
“LAGFERRY sincerely appreciates all responders, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), private boat operators, and other rescuers who worked tirelessly to contain the situation. We also commend the passengers for their cooperation during the evacuation.”
“A full-scale investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the fire and prevent future occurrence.
“In the meantime, additional safety measures and inspections will be reinforced across all our fleet to restate our commitment to safety on our waterways.”‘
LASU: MINISTER OF EDUCATION, OLATUNJI ALAUSA TO DELIVER 28TH CONVOCATION LECTURE, NAMES APC NATIONAL CHAIRMAN AS CHAIR OF OCCASION

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa has been announced as the Lecturer of the 28th Convocation Lecture of the Lagos State University, LASU titled: “Patriots, Citizenship and National Ownership; The Imperative of Collective Responsibility for Nigeria’s Future”.
Vice Chancellor of LASU, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello who made the announcement at pre convocation press conference also said the National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress and Former Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje will serve as Chairman of the occasion scheduled to hold at the Buba Marwa Auditorium on the 8th of April, 2025.
Professor Olatunji-Bello explained that Honorary Doctorate Degrees will be conferred on two eminent Nigerians for their invaluable contributions to the development of LASU and the Country at large. They are: Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Brigadier General Buba Marwa Rtd. and former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Otunba Olufemi Olusegun Pedro.
She noted that out among the 8,711 students graduating with first degree programme, 192 came out with first class hounours, 3076 with second class upper, 4397 with second class lower, 990 with third class, 39 with pass and 17 with unclassified degrees( MBBS/BDS).
The Vice Chancellor also announced Nwosu Isioma Sybil of the Biochemistry Department as the overall best graduating student for the 2023/2024 academic session with a CGPA of 4.93( First Class Hounours).
“I am happy to announce our best Graduating students for the academic sessions, 2023/2024 Academic session is Nwosu Isioma of the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science with the CGPA of 4.93.
“A total of 971 Diploma students are graduating this year. The breakdown is as follows: 123 Distinctions, 550 Upper credits, 287 Lower credits and 11 pass”
Professor Olatunji-Bello also gave a breakdown of the activities for the 28th Convocation Ceremony whih marks her 4th as a Vice Chancellor.
She said this year’s convocation is divided into two segments of Pre-Convocation events and Convocation events:
“This press conference, which marks the first pre-convocation event, will be followed by the Convocation Staff Sports Competition, later today at the LASU Sports Centre.
“On Friday, 4th April, 2025 which marks Day 2 of the ceremony, we will hold a special Jumat service at the University Central Mosque at 1.00pm.
“On Day 3 Sunday 6th April, 2025, a Special Thanksgiving Service will be held at the University Chapel of Light, Ojo, Lagos at 10.00am. This service will mark the conclusion of the pre-convocation events.
“On Monday 7th April, 2025 the Convocation events will officially commence with the Coconut Breaking and Cultural Festival, scheduled to take place at the Badagry Gate of our main campus at 9.00am.
“The coconut breaking Ceremony is usually organized by the Alumni Association as their contribution to the Convocation ceremony.
