Sponsors of the Women National Basketball League, Zenith Bank Plc has rolled out the drums for the victorious D’Tigress of Nigeria after the team secured a record-breaking 5th back-to-back AfroBasket title.

In a fun fair ceremony on Tuesday at a reception held at their Abuja head office in Maitama, the bank rewarded the team with N200m.

Each of the players will receive N10m which will be paid into their Zenith Bank accounts while the technical crew and others will share the remaining.

D’Tigress, after beating Mali 78-64 in the final played in Abidjan on Sunday arrived the country on Monday afternoon and were hosted by President, Bola Tinubu, where they were rewarded with National Honours of OON and cash rewards.

After sponsoring the national women league for 18 years with some of the players in the past title winning team going through the league as two of the current team, Murjanatu Musa, the MVP of the Air Warriors team that won the league title in 2022 and Ifunnaya Okoro with the current coach of the team, Rena Wakama, also participating in the league as a player with First Bank Women Basketball team.

Present at the reception were some of Zenith Bank’s Executive Directors, who expressed their appreciation to the D’Tigress for making the country proud. They are Adobi Nwapa, Akin Ogunranti, Henry Oroh and Louis Odom.

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, President of the NBBF, Musa Kida and some of his board members were also at the colourful event

While appreciating the D’Tigress for a job well done, the GMD/CEO of Zenith Bank, Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji OON, said the outfit would continue to support the women basketball in Nigeria as they look forward to the team excelling at the world stage.

Nigeria, China to Unlock $2bn Maritime Investment Under New Partnership

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, is advancing a Nigeria–China Maritime Strategy aimed at unlocking over $2 billion in shipping investment, accelerating indigenous vessel ownership, and positioning Nigeria as a regional maritime hub.

The initiative, formally presented to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Isiaka Oyetola, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP) and the Global Investment Advisory Community (GIAc), through its Nigerian operator, Anabel Capital.

The strategy is designed to catalyse local participation in the maritime industry by capitalising Nigerian-owned shipping companies and linking them with Chinese shipyards, charter firms, and investment banks. It also outlines substantial investment in vessel acquisition, maritime training institutions, and the procurement of modern training vessels.

According to the economic blueprint, the initiative will deliver $2 billion in vessel investments, $20 billion in freight contracts for Nigerian operators, $200 million for maritime training, and $50 million for training vessels. The programme is expected to create over 2,000 new maritime jobs annually, train 25,000 globally certified Nigerian seafarers, and build a robust local shipping ecosystem.

Speaking on the proposal, Minister Oyetola described the strategy as a “game changer” that aligns with the Ministry’s overarching priorities for sectoral reform and economic growth. He stressed the need to rapidly build indigenous capacity, deepen public-private collaboration, and transition toward Nigerian ownership of commercial vessels. 

Also present at the meeting were Mr. Olufemi Oloruntola, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry; Mr. Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, Managing Director/CEO of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA); Mr. Joseph Tegbe, Director-General of the NCSP; Dr. Nicholas Okoye, Managing Director of Anabel Capital; and Ms. Lela Omo-Ikirodah, Project Manager at NCSP.

The Nigeria–China Maritime Strategy forms part of broader efforts to translate strategic diplomacy into high-impact, private-sector-driven economic outcomes, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

SUNU Health Nigeria Earns Praise for Restoring Trust in NHIA with Life-Saving Intervention

In a heartfelt recount of events that could have turned tragic, a senior correspondent with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Innocent Okoro Onoh, has praised SUNU Health Nigeria Limited for its swift and professional intervention during his wife’s labour, restoring his faith in the National Health Insurance Authority, NHIA scheme.

Okoro, who had long harboured doubts about the NHIA due to public criticism and negative perceptions, said his experience with SUNU Health during a recent medical emergency revealed the scheme’s potential when managed by the right hands.

According to him, his wife went into labour late at night on Tuesday, July 29, and was initially rushed to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Ikotun, Lagos, where she had registered for antenatal care. However, unknown to them, the health centre had joined a nationwide strike and had suspended services from midnight.

“The atmosphere was cold and unwelcoming. A midwife rudely informed us that no help would be rendered due to the strike and we were advised to leave by 7 a.m.,” Okoro recalled. “There was no medical attention. Just prayers and panic.”

With time running out and his wife’s condition becoming increasingly urgent, he reached out to the Public Relations Officer of SUNU Health Nigeria Ltd, his Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) under the NHIA scheme. What followed, he said, was a display of professionalism and compassion that he never expected.

The SUNU Health official quickly directed him to the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital and guided him through the NHIA approval process. Upon arrival, the couple received immediate attention.

“At the NHIA desk, my wife’s name was already entered into the system. The staff were courteous and efficient,” Okoro said. “The care was world-class. The medical team treated my wife with the utmost professionalism, and the labour—though difficult—was handled with such expertise that she delivered our 4.1kg baby naturally, without complications.”

What struck Okoro the most was the seamless coordination between SUNU Health and the hospital, from admission to discharge, without any out-of-pocket expenses.

“I was amazed. After years of paying into the NHIA but avoiding its services, this experience changed everything. SUNU Health not only ensured a safe delivery but also restored my belief in our national health insurance system,” he said.

He urged more Nigerians to consider using their NHIA coverage and encouraged other Health Maintenance Organisations to adopt SUNU’s standards of service.

“SUNU Health demonstrated that with empathy, professionalism and a commitment to quality care, the NHIA can indeed live up to its goal of universal health coverage,” he added.

The testimonial, now widely circulated among media and health stakeholders, has sparked renewed discussions on the role of HMOs in improving public trust in Nigeria’s health insurance ecosystem.

SUNU Health Nigeria Ltd is one of the accredited HMOs under the NHIA, providing healthcare coverage to thousands of enrollees across the country.

Lagos Govt, NGOs Unite to Promote Safety in Homes, Public Spaces

The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, WAPA has reiterated its commitment to promoting a culture of safety in homes and public places, emphasizing that safety must become a shared civic responsibility in the ever-evolving urban landscape of Lagos.

This call was made by the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, during a one-day sensitization workshop themed “Homes and Public Places Safety: An Essential Way of Life,” held at the Women Development Centre, Agege.

Speaking at the interactive session, Hon. Dada described safety as a fundamental element of a well-ordered, people-centered city, stressing that both private and communal spaces must be secure for every Lagosian, young or old.

“Safety is not just about police presence. It includes well-lit streets, proper signage, hazard-free homes, clean public toilets, and organized pedestrian walkways. These are not luxuries, they are necessities,” she said.

She called on Lagos residents to embrace a culture of safety through responsible building practices, emergency preparedness, and respect for public infrastructure. “When we normalize carelessness such as blocking fire exits or over speeding in residential areas, we endanger ourselves and others,” she added.

The Commissioner highlighted the role of community collaboration and civic education in driving the message home, noting that the government alone cannot ensure public safety.

“Safety is everyone’s business, government, planners, parents, transporters, and even passersby,” she noted.

The workshop, which brought together government officials, facilitators, and women-focused NGOs, also served as a platform for practical knowledge sharing on risk prevention and safety protocols.

In her vote of thanks, the Permanent Secretary of WAPA, Mrs. Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo, lauded the partnership between government and civil society, describing the session as an impactful step towards building safer communities across Lagos.

“This meeting has not only deepened our understanding of safety, it has reminded us of the critical need for ongoing collaboration. Safety is a mindset, a daily practice, and a collective responsibility,” she said.

She extended appreciation to the Honourable Commissioner, the Directorate of NGOs, facilitators, and the various NGOs whose participation and community insights enriched the dialogue.

The Ministry affirmed that it will continue to partner with grassroots organisations and stakeholders to embed safety consciousness as a way of life across all localities in Lagos State.

TOURISM MINISTRY PARTNERS EU GLOBAL DIASPORA FACILITY TO TRAIN CREATIVE PRACTITIONERS IN LAGOS STATE

In a strategic move to boost Lagos State’s creative economy, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has partnered with the European Union Global Diaspora Facility, EUDiF to enhance training opportunities in heritage preservation and cultural development.

The collaboration was formalised on Monday, August 4, 2025, at the Honourable Commissioner’s office in Alausa, Ikeja, during a virtual meeting between the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka and EUDiF officials based in Germany, Ms. Lisa Bezvershenko and Ms. Charlotte Griffiths.

The initiative aims to build both local and international capacity while promoting community-driven cultural preservation. It will also serve as a platform to foster sustainable cultural practices and deepen the State’s creative sector.

The joint training programme is scheduled to commence in the third week of August 2025 at the divisional level. It will adopt a multi-stage approach, targeting 50 participants and focusing on equipping them with relevant creative skills.

Speaking on the partnership, Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka described the initiative as part of Lagos State’s heritage and cultural sustainability strategy. She emphasised the importance of cultural identity, stating: “If one loses their language, they have lost their identity in life.”

She further highlighted the ongoing revitalisation of museums in Lagos, particularly the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History as a cornerstone for heritage preservation and cultural tourism development.

CEMESO Condemns Shutdown of Badeggi FM, Urges Niger State Governor to Respect Democratic Rights

The Centre for Media and Society, CEMESO has condemned the arbitrary shutdown of Badeggi FM by the Niger State Governor, saying that it is a blatant deployment of executive power which violates the rule of law and the Rights of the media house and of a journalist.

The Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, had Last week, given a directive that Badeggi FM, a Minna-based Radio Broadcasting stations, be closed down, citing public incitement.

He directed the Commissioner for Homeland Security and Commissioner of Police under lock and key while of a licence should be revoked, the owner profiled and premises marked for demolition.

The Executive Director of CEMESO, Dr Akin Akingbulu, said that the arbitrary closure of Badeggi FM by Governor Bago is a dangerous move which violates the Rights of the media house and of a journalist guaranteed under the constitution.

“Governor Umaru Bago’s action must be given the proper description: a brazen abuse of executive power and assault on the rule of law by a political office holder who pledged to uphold the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He must understand that his action against Badeggi FM is an addition to the growing list of attacks on the press in Niger State under his administration, and questions his credentials as a believer in and respecter of independent and free functioning of institutions in a democracy.

Dr. Akingbulu wondered why the Governor refused to refer his concerns to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), the statutory regulator in charge of Broadcasting, which has established presence all over the country, including Niger State.

According to Akingbulu, “the cause of strengthening democracy will be well served when political office holders recognise and Respect the existence and roles of state and non-state institutions under an atmosphere of the rule of law”.

WAEC Pushes Digital Frontier with Full Rollout of Computer-Based Examinations by 2026

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC is set to make history as it accelerates plans to fully transition its flagship school examination into a computer-based format by 2026.

This follows the Council’s recent success in conducting hybrid computer-based (CB) examinations for private candidates.

Addressing journalists at a press briefing held at the WAEC National Office in Yaba, Lagos, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, confirmed that the Council is finalizing arrangements for the total implementation of Computer-Based Examinations (CBE) for all school candidates by the 2026 examination cycle.

“The Council, in line with the directive of the Federal Government of Nigeria, is concluding arrangements for the full conduct of Computer-Based WASSCE for School Candidates in 2026 across the country,” said Dr. Dangut. “This bold step builds on the success of our ongoing computer-based private exams.”

As a precursor to this full digital transition, WAEC is currently registering candidates for the 2025 Second Series of the CB-WASSCE for Private Candidates, which will mark the second time the examination will be conducted using a digital format.

Unlike conventional computer-based tests, WAEC’s hybrid model displays questions on screen while allowing candidates to write their answers in traditional answer booklets using pens, a format designed to ease candidates into the new approach.

The registration period, which began on June 9, 2025, will run until Friday, August 22, 2025, with provisions for Walk-in Candidates who can register just a day before their chosen exam date and sit for the paper with minimal delay.

Registration PINs are available at WAEC offices, accredited banks, and designated cashless payment centers. The fee remains ₦27,000, with an additional ₦500 commission for sales agents. Candidates must provide their National Identification Number (NIN) as part of the registration process. Further details are accessible via www.waeconline.org.ng.

Dr. Dangut emphasized that the broader goal of WAEC’s multiple examination diets and its shift to computer-based testing is to reduce wait times, enhance efficiency, and expand access to higher education opportunities.

“These developments are about more than just technology, they are about meeting students where they are and making assessment more accessible, secure, and future-driven.”

The Council also disclosed that the 2026 First Series of CB-WASSCE for Private Candidates is scheduled to take place in January/February 2026, immediately following the conclusion of the 2025 Second Series.

ANAMBRA SOUTH SENATORIAL DISTRICT ENDORSES SOLUDO, IBEZIM FOR RE-ELECTION

In a show of unity and support, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, and his Deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, have been unanimously adopted as the consensus candidates of the Anambra South Senatorial District in the forthcoming governorship election.

The announcement was made during a gathering at the Ekwulobia Township Stadium, where representatives from seven local government areas convened to rally in support of Governor Soludo’s re-election come November 8, 2025

According to the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, the gathering also saw the presentation of Chief Emmanuel Nwachukwu as the standard bearer for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the upcoming bye-election scheduled for August 16, 2025.

In his speech, Governor Soludo expressed his gratitude to the people of the South Senatorial Zone and the entire people of Anambra for their proactive involvement in the campaign, remarking that the support comes even before the official launch of his campaign council.

The Governor also expressed confidence in the APGA Senatorial candidate,  declaring that: “A vote for Chief Nwachukwu will ensure the emergence of a Senator who will collaborate closely with the Governor and join the APGA Caucus to implement our policy of working hand-in-hand with the government at the center,” Soludo assured.

Chief Nwachukwu, who received the party flag from APGA’s National Chairman, Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa, and the State Chairman, Barr. The Somolu Local Government Area is once again lighting the path to digital empowerment for children and teenagers, as it officially announces the return of TechSpark 2.0, a free summer technology bootcamp designed to give young minds a critical edge in the digital age.

The initiative, proudly hosted by the Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Ashimi Lateef, is being held in collaboration with Somolu Tech Innovation and Tech Shepherd Limited.

Scheduled to run from August 11 to 28, 2025, at the New ICT Hall of the Somolu Local Government Secretariat (beside UNA Primary School), the programme is open to kids and teens between the ages of 8 and 14 years.
