The West African Examinations Council, WAEC is set to make history as it accelerates plans to fully transition its flagship school examination into a computer-based format by 2026.
This follows the Council’s recent success in conducting hybrid computer-based (CB) examinations for private candidates.
Addressing journalists at a press briefing held at the WAEC National Office in Yaba, Lagos, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, confirmed that the Council is finalizing arrangements for the total implementation of Computer-Based Examinations (CBE) for all school candidates by the 2026 examination cycle.
“The Council, in line with the directive of the Federal Government of Nigeria, is concluding arrangements for the full conduct of Computer-Based WASSCE for School Candidates in 2026 across the country,” said Dr. Dangut. “This bold step builds on the success of our ongoing computer-based private exams.”
As a precursor to this full digital transition, WAEC is currently registering candidates for the 2025 Second Series of the CB-WASSCE for Private Candidates, which will mark the second time the examination will be conducted using a digital format.
Unlike conventional computer-based tests, WAEC’s hybrid model displays questions on screen while allowing candidates to write their answers in traditional answer booklets using pens, a format designed to ease candidates into the new approach.
The registration period, which began on June 9, 2025, will run until Friday, August 22, 2025, with provisions for Walk-in Candidates who can register just a day before their chosen exam date and sit for the paper with minimal delay.
Registration PINs are available at WAEC offices, accredited banks, and designated cashless payment centers. The fee remains ₦27,000, with an additional ₦500 commission for sales agents. Candidates must provide their National Identification Number (NIN) as part of the registration process. Further details are accessible via www.waeconline.org.ng.
Dr. Dangut emphasized that the broader goal of WAEC’s multiple examination diets and its shift to computer-based testing is to reduce wait times, enhance efficiency, and expand access to higher education opportunities.
“These developments are about more than just technology, they are about meeting students where they are and making assessment more accessible, secure, and future-driven.”
The Council also disclosed that the 2026 First Series of CB-WASSCE for Private Candidates is scheduled to take place in January/February 2026, immediately following the conclusion of the 2025 Second Series.
