In a bid to promote environmental sustainability and encourage responsible waste management among Nigerians, Fidelity Bank Plc has donated large-capacity recycling bins to Yaba College of Technology, YABATECH, Lagos.
The donation took place during the 19th edition of the Walk for Nature held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at YABATECH. Themed “Lagos, Let’s Beat Plastic Pollution,” the event was organized by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) in collaboration with the Lagos State Government to raise awareness on plastic pollution and promote sustainable waste management practices.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Meksley Nwagboh, Divisional Head, Brand and Communications, Fidelity Bank Plc, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to environmental consciousness and sustainability through consistent advocacy and community-driven initiatives.
“As a socially responsible institution, we integrate sustainability into our business and community impact programmes. Beyond reducing our carbon footprint through renewable energy deployment across our branches and ATM network, we are deepening advocacy for recycling and waste reduction,” he stated.
He added that the bank’s initiatives include recycling partnerships with schools, tree planting campaigns, and beautification projects across urban and underserved communities.
“We are donating three large recycling bins to YABATECH to encourage responsible waste management and recycling among students,” Dr. Nwagboh added.
Dr. Nwagboh commended the NCF and Lagos State Government for their efforts in promoting environmental awareness, urging individuals and organizations to adopt eco-friendly lifestyles and reduce reliance on single-use plastics.
“Beating plastic pollution starts with conscious choices. By rethinking our consumption habits and embracing recycling, we can make Lagos a model megacity for environmental stewardship,” he said.
In her remarks, Hon. Justice R.I.B. Adebiyi, Chairman of the NCF National Executive Council, noted that plastic pollution remains one of the most pressing global environmental challenges.
“This year’s Walk for Nature is unique as it brings the campaign to a tertiary institution. Fidelity Bank’s donation to YABATECH represents learning, responsibility, and change,” she said.
Representing the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, the Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, described plastic pollution as a silent global crisis that requires sustained public action.
The Rector of YABATECH, Dr. (Engr.) Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, expressed appreciation to Fidelity Bank and the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), which also donated two additional recycling bins to the institution.
“The recycling bins will be strategically positioned across campus and judiciously used to promote a culture of sustainability among students,” he said.
The initiative is part of Fidelity Bank’s ongoing environmental sustainability drive aimed at deepening awareness, strengthening recycling systems, and fostering eco-friendly habits among students and communities.
