LSSTF RECEIVES DELTA STATE COUNTERPART ON WORKING VISIT, RESTATES COMMITMENT TO ACCOUNTABILITY

The Lagos State Security Trust Fund, LSSTF has received delegates from the Delta State Security Trust Fund, DSSTF who were in the state on a working visit.

The visiting team led by its Executive Secretary, Sam Osasa said it is in Lagos to understudy the activities of the LSSTF with a view to equipping its members with prerequisite knowledge on how to run DSSTF effectively and successfully as the LSSTF has done in Lagos.

Osasa noted that LSSTF has remained relevant and impactful even after seventeen years of existence and the success recorded by the Fund has made other Trust Funds seek to understudy it.

In his welcome address, Executive Secretary/CEO of LSSTF, Abdurrazaq Balogun expressed hope that the purpose of the working visit by the team from DSSTF would be achieved and replicated in their state.

He stated that the strongest feature and mainstay of the Fund is in its accountability and judicious use of resources both in its operations and security interventions to security agencies.

According to Balogun, LSSTF places major focus on maintenance and that is why its assets remain functional lasting up to twelve years and more.

”The LSSTF deliberately operates a lean workforce so as to ensure that the bulk of resources raised are targeted at security support to these agencies. The Fund also lays emphasis on training and retraining of security agencies especially in areas of communication and how to deal with members of the public.

”Another strong point and reason for the success recorded by the Fund was in the caliber of individuals appointed by the Governor of the State into the Board of Trustees of the Fund. They have been men of high repute who are accomplished in the private endeavors, influential and see the job as an opportunity to give back to the State, Balogun noted.”

The LSSTF boss added that these individuals are the fundraisers as they leverage on their position and industry to reach out to other colleagues and partners to raise funds to sustain the activities of LSSTF.

In the highlight of the visit, the LSSTF put together onsite training sessions on modalities for operating an effective Trust Fund, arranged visitations to some of the beneficiaries of the Fund, and a tour of a world-class, indigenous security equipment manufacturing company among others.

… Urges Residents to Remain Calm, Support Government’s Efforts

The Lagos State Government has announced that the State is expected to experience more than normal amount of rainfall during the 2024 rainy season with a total of one thousand, nine hundred and thirty-six point two milimetre predicted rainfall

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab made this pronouncement at a media briefing on the Seasonal Climate Predictions (SCP) and the Socio-Economic Implications for Lagos State held at the Ministry’s Conference Room, Alausa, adding that the annual briefing is to alert Lagosians of the climate patterns and its socio-economic implications for residents.

He stressed that the average annual rainfall amount predicted for 2024 is 1936.2mm which is greater than the long-term average of 1721.48mm with the onset date expected to be the first week of April and ceasing in the first week of December.

He said Ikeja is expected to have an onset date of 4th April and a cessation date of 4th December with a high annual amount of 1900mm rainfall. He added that Badagry is expected to have a rainfall onset date of 1st April and cessation date of 5th December resulting in an annual amount of 1978mm while Ikorodu is expected to have a rainfall onset date of 4th April and cessation date of 4th December totaling an annual amount of 1903mm.

Speaking further, he mentioned that Lagos Island is expected to have a rainfall onset date of 3rd April with a cessation date of 4th December and an annual amount of 1936mm while Epe is expected to have a rainfall onset date of 2nd April, cessation date of 5th December and an annual amount of 1952mm.

Wahab noted that below-normal rainfall amounts are anticipated in the first half of the rainy season while normal to above-normal rainfall amounts are expected in the second half of the rainy season.

He reiterated that the Ministry’s collaboration with NiMet annually on the Seasonal Climate Prediction has been valuable as a vital weather and early warning tool for farmers, decision-makers, operators of the various sectors, and businesses that are likely to be impacted by the annual rainfall.

He said the government had plans to downscale the Seasonal Climate Prediction to stakeholders and emergency workers in the State, adding that the State had deployed and maintained its network of weather stations and river gauge stations to monitor the weather and river levels in the state and increase the preparedness for weather and flood-related issues.

He noted that to effectively contain flooding in the state, the government is determined to maintain the synergy and partnership with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority (OORBDA), stressing that the rainfall from neighbouring Ogun, Oyo, and Osun States, dams release and river water levels into the State will also be monitored.

He said the partnership has in years past ensured control and monitoring of the steady and systemic release of water from Oyan Dam to prevent flooding of the downstream reaches of the Ogun River, saying the mutual relationship has been highly beneficial and will be sustained.

Wahab further stated that proactively, the State has strengthened the Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) to deliver reliable, timely, and effective flood information at an appropriate response time, adding that the low-lying Agiliti, Agboyi, Itowolo, and Ajegunle communities will be closely monitored concerning the likelihood of Ogun River flooding as well as all other river basins in the State.

The Commissioner explained that it is expected that the high amounts of rainfall and other contributory factors may lead to flooding events in some parts of the State while leading to a rise in Lagoon level, saying that anytime there is high tidal movement, it may “lock up” the discharge points of drainage channels and until it recedes.

He said such occurrences can cause backflow resulting in flooding and as soon as the Lagoon recedes, all the generated stormwater will immediately be discharged and the roads will be free, stressing that it is only when stormwater remains on the roads for hours that there should be reports of flooding.

He stressed that the government had put all emergency response organisations, traffic management organisations, and other emergency-related organisations on high alert to help lessen the detrimental effects of thunderstorms and associated rains in the State.

Therefore, according to him, the government will ramp up sensitisation for residents along flood plains of major rivers such as Owode, Iwaya, Makoko, Badia, Ijora, Isaalu, Pota, and Shibiri to be alert and ready to relocate to higher grounds when the need arises, adding that Drainage Engineers are available in all 57 LGA and LCDAs to attend to drainage related matters during and after the rainy season.

The Special Adviser on Environment Mr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu appealed to residents to support the efforts of the government by regularly cleaning drains in their frontages to ensure the free flow of stormwater as well as desist from dumping of refuse into drainage channels.

He added that residents should refrain from acts that could lead to flooding such as indiscriminate dumping of construction materials, erecting building structures within and around drainage Right of Ways, and setbacks.

He also advised residents to report cases of drainage blockages, and dumping of waste into canals and other unauthorized places to the Residents’ Engineers and zero tolerance offices statewide, imploring motorists to observe prescribed speed limits on the roads to avoid loss of lives and property during the rainy season.

The briefing had in attendance the Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, Engineer Olakunle Adegbite, and his counterpart in the Office of Environmental Services, Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen amongst others.

LASU,UNILAG CONVERGE FOR PRE-FASU SEMINAR AHEAD JOINT HOSTING OF AFRICA UNIVERSITIES GAMES

The flame of healthy rivalry has been ignited between the two leading universities in Lagos State, Lagos State University, LASU and the University of Lagos, UNILAG, when the two institutions converged on the Ojo campus of the  for the Pre-FASU Games Seminar on Tuesday, 26th March 2024.

The Pre-FASU Seminar was held to facilitate the merger of the organising committees of the two institutions ahead of the All Africa Universities Games (FASU) tagged Lagos 2024, scheduled to be held between 20th and 29th September 2024.

Host of the event, the Vice Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, in her address, enthused that hosting the prestigious event is not just a testament to the universities’ commitment to the promotion of sports, but also a celebration of the rich diversity and talent that exists within the African continent.

She expressed her confidence in the ability of the members of the organising committees of the two institutions to jointly host a successful tournament.

She said, “I have no doubt that with the array and pedigree of individuals who have been appointed to serve on the various sub-committees of the main organising committee, we are in for nothing but success at the end of the competition. As members of the organising committees, you have been entrusted with a significant responsibility – to ensure the smooth and successful execution of this historic event. You can not afford to fail.”

She concluded by urging the organising committee members to be united in hosting the best university Games ever while ensuring the institutions also emerge victorious.

“This is the second time the competition is coming to Nigeria. Let’s work together as a united force to make it the best FASU Games ever. And if in the process we do win the competition, that would be the icing on the cake. There is no reason for our teams not to come first and second. We are hosting to make history, we are hosting to win,” she said.

She thanked the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for his interest in the success of the competition.

The Co-Host, Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, FAS, OON, in her speech also echoed the LASU VC’s sentiments about hosting the best games in the competition’s history.

She said, “The continent of Africa has about 1.3 billion people 70% of which are below the age of 30 years. These young people are the pride of Africa. Nigeria has about 159 million of that population, and the people who will be competing are within that range.

So, what we are doing is building a future of young people coming together, collaborating, and excelling. The bridges that we will be building will take us far into the future, and where better to build the bridges than in Lagos State, the State of Excellence, and where better than UNILAG and LASU?

She concluded, “It is great that we are here today to flag off LASU and to tell everyone that we are going to host the best games ever.”

Participants were treated to illuminating lectures by Mr Bola Orodele, the former Secretary General
NUGA, Prof. Iyiola Oni from the Centre for Multi-Modal Transport Studies, University of Lagos, and Prof. Clement Fasan, the Programme Director, International Olympic Committee Advanced Sports Management Course (ASMC) Nigeria, before the committees were broken into different sessions for effective engagement.

The joint hosting of the FASU Games marks the first time ever that two universities in the same State will be hosting the competition.

General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, has led a team from the Agency on a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University, LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM.

The team met with the VC on Monday, 25th March 2024, at her office on the 6th Floor, Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, main campus, Ojo, Lagos.

According to Dr Ajayi, the visit was aimed at seeking collaboration with Lagos State University on research, knowledge exchange in areas of mutual interest, and data-gathering for research-based solutions that can drive policy development for environmental protection and sustainability.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, in her response, appreciated the Agency for bringing such an opportunity to the university and expressed excitement at the potential collaboration between the two institutions.


Members on the LASEPA team included: Executive Assistant to Lagos State Governor on Environmental Protection, Mrs Tolulope Adebowale, Director, Laboratory Services, Mrs Olabisi Shonibare, Director, Research and Development, Mrs M. Abdulwarees-Solanke, Head, Partnerships, Grants Management and Innovation, Dr Olisa Bukonla, among others.

Between February 10, 2020 when the commercial operations of Lagos Ferry Services was launched by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at Badore Terminal, Ajah Eti-Osa and March 19, 2024; it has been an eventful journey of one thousandth (1000th) day of commuting Lagosians and businesses of Lagos on the inland waterways.

Despite months of lockdown occasioned by the global outbreak of Corona Virus and the destructive #EndSars protest, the state-owned commercial ferry operator – LAGFERRY was able to navigate the murky water, positively changed the narratives, berthed technology-driven safe & efficient water transportation model and practically translate the vision of Governor Sanwo-Olu to create a smart-city with functional multi-modal transportation system by optimizing the socio-economic potentials of the natural water bodies in Lagos State, as part of the robust initiatives contained in the Strategic Transportation Master Plan (STMP).

Lagos State, the economic hub of Nigeria, faces numerous challenges in its transportation sector. The ever-increasing population, congested roads, and inadequate public transport infrastructure have made it crucial to explore alternative modes of transportation. In recent years, the Government of Lagos State, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has embarked on an ambitious plan to revolutionize water transportation in the state which has emerged one of the key focus areas for the Lagos State Government. With a vision of enhancing mobility, reducing traffic congestion, and boosting the blue economy, the Government has implemented various initiatives and developments to transform water transportation in Lagos State.

Water transportation has Deep historical roots in Lagos State. In the past, the waterways played a crucial role in trade and commerce, connecting various parts of the State and facilitating the movement of goods and people. Traditional watercraft such as canoes and fishing boats were commonly used for transportation, especially in the riverine communities. However, with the rapid urbanization and population growth experienced in Lagos over the years, water transportation took a backseat as road networks expanded to accommodate the increasing demand but with the introduction and contributions of Lagos State Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) to the development of the water transportation sector, significant improvement has been.seen.

The origin of water transportation in Lagos State can be traced to the 1970s when Lagos was still the federal capital of Nigeria. Then the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) operated ferry services to Apapa, CMS, Ebute-Ero and other locations. Later, the state government under the Lateef Jakande administration also came up
with its ferry service when it purchased its ferry boats “Baba Kekere” and “Ita Faji” and operated from Mile 2 to Apapa, CMS, Elegbata (Ebute-Ero).
Gov Babatunde Fashola Commissioned and operated ferry services from the following Terminals Ebute Ojo Terminal (Now Sifax Terminal), Ipakodo Ferry Terminal (Ikorodu), Badore Ferry Terminal and Osborne Ferry Terminal With 2units of 54pax Aluminium boats while Gov Ambode Commissioned Ilaje Bariga Waterfront Terminal with 4 Units Catamaran Boat with 1 Car Barge (Adimu Orisa)

Today, under the Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, the relaunched Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) is running water transport in 24 routes from 16 terminals/jetties with 19 commercial boats, While government is rehahibilitating and constructing 15 new terminals/jetties across the state

The primary objective of LAGFERRY is to provide safe, efficient, and reliable water transportation services to the people of Lagos. The vision is to be the go-to model and alpha solution provider in the business of water transportation which is in consonance with the Lagos State T.H.E.M.E.S PLUS Agenda of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, aim at enabling intermodal movement options and promotion of commerce and tourism, through the provision of safe efficient and technologically-driven ferry services manned by competent workforce to ensure environmental sustainability.

Hence Mr. Governor’s vision for water transportation in Lagos State is to create an efficient, reliable, and sustainable mode of transportation that meets the needs of the growing population. By completing strategic projects and leveraging technological innovations, the aim is to make water transportation an attractive option for commuters and optimize the blue economy potential of Lagos’ waterways. Lagos State blessed with vast water bodies, including the Atlantic Ocean, lagoons, and creeks, the State Government prioritized the development and utilization of these waterways, leading to a significant increase in the availability of routes for water transportation.

Governor Sanwo-Olu’s passion for improving water transportation is evident in his commitment to creating an integrated multi-modal transport system that seamlessly connects road, rail, and water transportation. By promoting water transportation as a viable alternative to road transport, he aims to ease traffic congestion and significantly reduce travel time for commuters. Under his leadership, the Lagos State Government has demonstrated unwavering commitment to transforming water transportation by allocating substantial resources and implementing comprehensive policies and projects. This commitment is driven by the belief that efficient and sustainable water transportation is vital for the economic growth and development of Lagos State hence which LAGFERRY has proven to be the key driver of this vision.

To achieve the vision of transforming water transportation, Governor Sanwo-Olu has assembled a team of experienced and dedicated professionals. These individuals, including experts in maritime affairs, transport, and urban planning, work together to comprehensively assess the existing infrastructure and bottlenecks as well as collaborated with various stakeholders to identify the key challenges and develop strategies for improvement. This process involved consultations with experts, public hearings, and a detailed feasibility study to
execute the government’s plans effectively and efficiently thus paving the way for the blue economy.

Lagos State is the most populous State in Nigeria, with an estimated population of over 20 million. It covers an approximate landmass of 3,577 square kilometers and is blessed with a vast network of water bodies, including the Lagos Lagoon, Yewa River, Creeks and Ogun River, making it an ideal location to develop a robust water transportation system. The transformation initiative identified key routes within the state, connecting various parts of Lagos to alleviate the pressure on road transportation. The routes were strategically selected based on factors such as population density, potential passenger demand, and existing infrastructure. These routes include popular destinations such as Ikorodu, CMS, Ebute-ero, Falomo, Apapa, Ijegun-egba, Ojo, Badagry, Badore, Law school, Liverpool, Epe, etc.

To facilitate seamless water transportation, Lagos State has invested in the establishment and renovation of terminals, landings, (floating) jetty(ies) along various waterways. These terminals serve as key transit points, enabling commuters to board and disembark from boats and ferries comfortably and safely. Furthermore, Water transportation in Lagos State caters to a diverse range of passengers with different backgrounds. From daily commuters to tourists and business travelers, the water transport system offers a convenient and efficient mode of travel. The inclusive approach of the initiative has ensured that the needs and preferences of all passengers are taken into consideration.

The transformation of water transportation in Lagos State has not been without challenges. These include issues such as inadequate infrastructure, encroachment on waterways, insufficient public awareness, insufficient boats/ferries and the need for increased security and safety measures. However, the Government remains committed to addressing these challenges through sustained efforts and collaborations with relevant stakeholders (LASWA, NIWA) and others.

The development of water transportation in Lagos State goes hand in hand with the optimization of the blue economy. By harnessing the potential of the waterways, the state is creating employment opportunities and economic growth in industries such as fishing, aquaculture, tourism, and maritime activities. In addition to the infrastructure improvements and technological advancements, the Government has also encouraged creative initiatives to promote water transportation. These include cultural events like Lagos Water Regatta, weddings, tourism campaigns, and educational programs that highlight the historical and environmental significance of Lagos’ waterways. By fostering community engagement, these initiatives aim to increase public appreciation for water transportation.

The transformation of this sector in the State has significant implications for the economy. The increased use of waterways reduces the pressure on road infrastructure, leading to cost savings and improved efficiency. Moreover, the growth of the blue economy further contributes to the state’s GDP, attracting investment and promoting economic diversification.

A crucial aspect of the water transportation transformation is the integration of multiple transport modes. This integration allows for seamless connectivity between roads, rails, and waterways, providing commuters with convenient and efficient travel options. By developing an integrated multi-modal transport system, the Government aims to reduce reliance on private vehicles and alleviate traffic congestion in Lagos State. With the commencement of operations of the blue and red line rails, commuters has been given transport movement options to their respective destinations.

To enhance the overall water transportation experience, Lagos State government has embraced technological innovations. These include the implementation of modern ticketing systems, real-time tracking and monitoring of vessels, and the development of user-friendly mobile applications for trip planning and information dissemination. These innovations make water transportation more accessible, reliable, and appealing to commuters.

Additionally, Under the capable hands of the Managing Director, Lagos Ferry Services, Hon. Abdoulbaq Ladi Balogun, significant efforts have been made to improve and develop the water transportation sector in the state. LAGFERRY recently constructed and completed a state-of-the-art, modern floating pontoon at CMS-Marina to provide a convenient berthing point and movement for commuting residents and visitors alike. it also constructed a well-equipped E-Fleet Surveillance systems with modern technology to monitor boat arrival and take off on the waterways. The Government has made strategic investments in ensuring the availability of amenities like well-equipped and furnished as well as state-of-the-art terminals, jetties, ticketing booths, waiting areas and security measures to improve the overall passenger experience. Furthermore, efforts have been made to improve last-mile connectivity by providing connectivity between waterways and other modes of transportation, such as buses and motorcycles.

The Standard Model of Water Transportation:
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration has worked towards developing a standard model for water transportation in Lagos State. This involves defining regulations, safety protocols, and quality standards to ensure a reliable and secure commuting experience for all passengers. Hence LAGFERRY becomes a benchmark for other boat and ferry operators within the State and Lagos State Waterways Authority is the regulatory body. This enables the Government attracts more private sector investment and create a competitive market for water transportation services.

The overhaul of water transportation in Lagos State has set a standard for other states in Nigeria and beyond. The effective implementation of modern technology, infrastructure development, and operational efficiency has become a benchmark for other regions looking to improve their water transportation systems. Lagos State’s success has proven that water transportation can be a viable and sustainable solution to urban congestion challenges.

With any mode of transportation, risks and insurance play a crucial role in ensuring safety and security. The Government of Lagos State has implemented strict regulations and safety measures to mitigate risks associated with water transportation. Additionally, insurance policies have been introduced to protect both passengers and operators.

One of the primary objectives of transforming water transportation is to alleviate the traffic density experienced on Lagos roads. By shifting a significant portion of commuter traffic to the waterways, the government aims to improve road network efficiency, reduce travel time, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.

To cater to diverse commuter needs, Lagos State has established multiple modes of water transportation, including ferries, water taxis, and boats of various sizes. These options allow for flexibility in terms of capacity, speed, and coverage, ensuring that commuters have a suitable choice depending on their routes and preferences.

With Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership and vision, water transportation in Lagos State has experienced an uncommon transformation. Through strategic investments, technological innovations, adopting chest practices and a commitment to the blue economy, the Government has successfully created an integrated multi-modal transport system that provides a reliable, sustainable, and efficient alternative to road-based commuting. It has revolutionized commuting patterns.The future of water transportation in Lagos State is promising, with continued efforts aimed at optimizing the vast potential of the waterways for economic growth, reduced traffic congestion, and enhanced quality of life for residents. Lagos State has become a leader in water transportation not only in Nigeria but also in Africa.

Hence the success achieved by Governor Sanwo-Olu and his Sailors serves as an inspiration for other States and countries grappling with transportation challenges.

LASUSU WELFARE: FREE CAMPUS SHUTTLE SERVICE TO COMMENCE FROM MARCH 25TH

The Lagos State University Students’ Union, LASUSU, says the Free Shuttle service will start from Monday 25th, March 2024.

In a statement issued through the Office of Welfare Director, the shuttle service will be in two time range; Morning between 9:30am-11:30am and Afternoon between 1:30pm-2:30pm.

In a chat with Blacktalker, LASUSU Welfare Director, Apata Oluwasegun explained that on the said day, students can commute around the Ojo Campus using the shuttles at no cost, but must provide a valid identification card, which will verify them as Students of the University.

“It is compulsory for you to come with your ID ???? card or a temporary ID card online.”

Apata also said the initiative was a cardinal campaign point for him, which is aimed at helping students access school shuttles for free amid the current economic downturns being experienced by Nigerians.

The LASUSU Welfare Director said his Office is open to collaboration from corporate bodies and other stakeholders to ensure the initiative is further sustained for the benefit of all LASUITES.

Apata, who pledged to continue on the path of people-driven projects to ease the lives of students, added that FMS, Art and Buba Marwa Shuttle Parks are the designated locations for students to benefit from the free transport initiative.

BREAKING: Veteran Actor, Amaechi Muonagor Dies In India

Veteran Nollywood actor, Amaechi Muonagor who less than two weeks ago called on Nigerians to assist him financially to carry out a kidney transplant in India, is dead.

The sudden news of his demise came few days after his viral video was trending online, where a relative solicited for funds to help him have Kidney transplant.

He was born August 12, 1961.

Amaechi Muonagor was from Obosi village in Idemili North, Anambra State in Nigeria. He attended St. Mary’s Primary School, Obosi, Oraifite Grammar School before he furthered his education at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) where he studied economics and graduated in 1987.

In 1989 after his youth service, Amaechi started working for NAN (News Agency of Nigeria). He left his job a few years later for an acting role in his first movie as Akunatakasi in Taboo 1, a Nigerian movie.

Kaduna State Government has announced the release of the two hundred and eighty-seven schoolchildren kidnapped from Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area of the State.

Governor Uba Sani in a statement, appreciated President Bola Tinubu, for prioritising the safety and security of Nigerians and particularly ensuring that the abducted Kuriga school children were released unharmed.

The Governor also appreciated the courage of the officers of the Nigerian Army for seeing to the successful release of the schoolchildren.

On March seven, the schoolchildren from LEA Primary School and Government Secondary School, Kuriga, were abducted by the hoodlums who took them into the forest.

The abductors demanded one billion naira for their release while giving a deadline of March twenty-seven, 2024, for the payment of the ransom.

Strike: Education Writers set to host Minister, Labour Leaders over University Workers’ withheld salaries

The Education Writers’ Association of Nigeria (EWAN), a body of journalists across print, online and broadcast platforms, will on Sunday hold a forum to engage critical stakeholders including the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, among others, over the ongoing warning strike by workers’ unions in the universities.

According to a statement on Saturday by EWAN, the Presidents of both Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Muhammed Ibrahim, and Ibeji Nwokema, respectively, have confirmed their participation in the virtual programme.


The statement, endorsed by the Chairperson of the planning committee, Elizabeth Osayande, noted that the forum, which will take place via Zoom, is scheduled to hold between 4p.m and 5:30p.m on Sunday, 24 March.

According to Mrs Osayande, EWAN is aware that the Minister and other officials of the ministry met with the labour unions during the week, but the fact that there was no concrete resolutions, demanded urgent intervention from stakeholders including the media.

She noted that EWAN’s intervention became necessary in order to gain firsthand knowledge on the matter and report the issues fairly, noting that what Nigeria witnessed during the prolonged industrial actions in 2022 was not palatable and that “such an experience should not be allowed to repeat itself again.”
She said: “As a body of journalists, we have a responsibility not just to report but to report fairly and possibly create avenues for stakeholders to engage and offer the public opportunities to intervene before matters degenerate.


“Shutting down the universities for about eight months in 2022 caused a major setback for the nation’s university education, and we cannot fold our arms to allow another round of indefinite industrial action to jeopardise the future of our country. Like every other person, journalists also have a role to play.”

It would be recalled that the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and other Associated Institutions (NASU) had on Monday commenced a seven-day warning strike to press home its demand for the payment of members’ withheld four months salaries since 2022.

The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) also, during the week, embarked on a warning strike over the same issue.
The development, which disrupted activities across various campuses nationwide, reportedly led to the death of a student at the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State, for being unable to access the institution’s healthcare centre when he was ill.
