Lagos State Government Enhances Safety Training for School Leaders Amid Tolu Schools Complex Redevelopment

As the redevelopment of the Tolu Schools Complex continues, the Lagos State Government has launched a safety training initiative for school principals and head teachers. This effort, organized by the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools, SCRPS in partnership with the Lagos State Safety Commission, aims to instill essential safety measures at construction sites.

During the event, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hon. Jamiu Alli-Balogun emphasized the commitment of the Sanwo-Olu administration to improve educational standards in the state. He noted that the redevelopment began last year, following the Governor’s approval for a complete overhaul of the schools in the complex.

Expressing satisfaction with the progress, Alli-Balogun highlighted the construction of new buildings and ongoing rehabilitation efforts, noting significant improvements since his last visit. He urged school leaders to adopt the safety measures taught in the workshop and to pass this knowledge on to students, who are particularly vulnerable to potential injuries during construction.

“The essence of this safety training is to prevent casualties among students while work is ongoing,” he stated. He praised the Governor’s support for the education sector, urging principals and head teachers to diligently fulfill their responsibilities, which will enhance student outcomes.

Alli-Balogun also expressed relief that there have been no reported accidents at the construction sites since the project’s inception nine months ago, assuring continued support for teachers’ welfare.

Chairman of the SCRPS, Mr. Hakeem Smith, highlighted that the Tolu School Complex covers 11.73 hectares and includes 31 secondary schools and five primary schools, serving approximately 19,714 students. He stressed the need for rigorous safety protocols to protect students and assist contractors in completing projects on time.

To recognize their role, principals and head teachers were designated as SCRPS Safety Ambassadors and received safety kits, including helmets, vests, and boots.

The event was attended by notable figures, including the Executive Chairman of Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government, Hon. Fatai Adekunle Ayoola, and the ANCOPSS Chairman of the local government, along with other distinguished guests.

The Executive Director of the Centre for Media and Society, CEMESO, Dr. Akin Akingbulu has emphasized the critical importance of monitoring trends in Freedom of Expression and Information (FOE&I) in Nigeria, particularly during crisis and conflict situations.

Dr. Akingbulu made this call at a virtual event that brought together participants from diverse sectors, including media and civil society, to discuss urgent issues affecting citizens’ fundamental freedoms.

He noted that recent monitoring efforts have revealed alarming trends, including arrests and harassment of journalists, censorship, and restrictions on protests.

Dr. Akingbulu also pointed out that these actions reflect broader attempts to control the flow of information in Nigeria, which faces increasing judicial regulations that threaten access to information.

“Social media has emerged as a vital public sphere for discourse,” he stated, highlighting its role in enabling citizens to engage in political debates. However, he cautioned that this accessibility has led to heightened scrutiny and efforts to limit its influence.

The conversation also addressed the economic challenges facing Nigeria, such as high unemployment and inflation, which often lead to the suppression of dissenting voices. Dr. Akingbulu stressed that despite constitutional protections, the rights of Nigerians to express themselves freely are increasingly under threat.

Highlighting the role of various actors in these trends, he underscored the need for collective responsibility in upholding FOE&I. “Our role here is not only to observe but to understand, influence, and advocate for a future where freedom of expression can flourish,” he said.

Dr. Akingbulu introduced the Media Expression Pulse Dashboard, a new platform designed to provide real-time insights into FOE&I issues, supported by IFEX. He encouraged stakeholders to utilize this tool to foster dialogue and action to defend these vital rights.

During the session, participants shared their experiences regarding FOE&I and explored the dynamics between various actors impacting FOE&I in Nigeria, underscoring the need for ongoing advocacy and awareness in these challenging times.

….Charges Beneficiaries on Contributing Quota to Lagos Economic Development

The Lagos State government has admonished beneficiaries of the Life Skills Economic Empowerment Programme to ensure they practice what they have learned during the short-term skills acquisition programme.

Commissioner of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Dada, gave the admonishment on Tuesday, 15th October 2024 at the closing ceremony of the four-week programme at the Eti-Osa Local Council Development Area in Ajah area of the State.

Hon. Dada who spoke through the Director of the Women Department in WAPA, Olufunke Shyllon noted that it is part of the Sanwo-Olu THEMES Plus agenda to ensure that more women are empowered as small and medium enterprises are the souls of every economy.

She noted that the present administration has empowered about 16,500 women across different Local Government Areas, LGAs, and Local Council Development Areas, LCDA of the State since its inception.

Chairman of the LCDA, John Campos Ogundare, also charged the beneficiaries to maximise the opportunities and not relent in improving on the skills acquired during the four-week training scheme.

“We admonish you to make use of the equipment they have given you; do not sell it off”, Ogundare added at the closing ceremony.

One of the beneficiaries, a nineteen-year-old student, Aishat Olaiwola, noted that she learned soap-making and cream because of its simplicity.
“I can make soap and sell to my colleagues when I return to school and make money for myself”, Aishat said.

Another Beneficiary, who learned Make-up artistry, Eberechukwu Juliana, said she is grateful for the opportunity as this will enable her to become financially independent.

“My church members wear makeup to Church on Sundays a lot; so, learning how to do this is a step in the right direction for me, because I’ll tell them I can now do make-up. And I will make their faces up on Sunday and earn some money for myself”

Eberechukwu also appreciated the Lagos State government for not only training beneficiaries but also providing equipment to enhance their productivity on the job.

Skills learned during the four-week training programme were: fabric stoning, throw pillows and duvets, soap making, catering, and make-up artistry.

Equipment such as sewing machines, make-up boxes, and ring lights, gas cylinders, basins, stoning machines among others were handled over to one hundred beneficiaries from across the Eti-Osa East LCDA.

Ahead the commencement of the Non-Polio Supplemental Immunization Activities, NPSIA, the media have been charged to champion messages around the benefits of the exercise that will focus on Measles, Yellow Fever, Polio, Routine Immunization, Tetanus Diphtheria and the Human papillomavirus, HPV Vaccination.

The charge came to the fore at a media orientation programme on the NPSIA/Yellow Fever Campaign organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Information and Strategy in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund, and UNICEF.

In his welcome address, Supervising Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Abimbola Bowale reiterated the state government’s unwavering commitment to protecting citizens’ health through effective immunization strategies. “Immunization is the first line of defense in strengthening health outcomes for families and communities,” Bowale stated.

Highlighting the media’s essential role, the Permanent Secretary stressed that journalists must intensify efforts in disseminating accurate information to ensure that every child receives life-saving immunizations, with no one left behind.

“Informing the public about the benefits of these supplemental immunizations and the safety protocols in place can significantly boost participation and trust in these health initiatives,” he added.

In his paper, Immunization Programme Coordinator in the State Primary Health Care Board, Adetola Akinpelu explained that the NPSIA will target vaccines including Measles, Yellow Fever, and HPV, aiming for at least 95% coverage for the measles vaccine and 80% for yellow fever to achieve herd immunity.

“These activities are not merely operational tasks; they are life-saving interventions that contribute to the health and well-being of our future generations,” Akinpelu noted.

UNICEF Social and Behavioural Change Specialist, Aderonke Akinola-Akinwole said the Fund intends to employ the help of journalists to combat myths through credible and easy-to-understand content, which will promote and increase vaccine trust and acceptance.

On the safety of health workers during the exercise, Akinola-Akinwole noted that measures are in place in collaboration with the Lagos State Government to deploy qualified personnel, potent vaccines, and other equipment to ensure the success of the exercise.

”UNICEF is committed to the shared goal of a healthier Lagos State and Nigeria, that is free from preventable diseases. We are already engaging with critical stakeholders such as Religious Leaders, Traditional Rulers, and Pressure Groups, among others to better capture our target audience”.

Ondo: Group Tasks Ilaje Leaders on ‘Rescue’ of Gov. Aiyedatiwa Amid Crisis

As the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State approaches, tensions are escalating within the state government, centering on the alleged controversial actions of the Finance Commissioner, Mrs. Omowumi Isaac.

The development has made a pro-democracy group, the Concerned Citizens Movement, CCM take a bold stance this week, urging Ilaje leaders and elders to intervene to ‘rescue’ their son, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who doubles as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, from the clutches of alleged financial mismanagement that could jeopardise his administration and election.

The CCM’s outcry, articulated by its coordinator, Comrade Adewale Kareem, drew attention to a growing crisis of confidence among cabinet members, being fueled by Isaac’s purported lack of transparency and accountability in managing the state’s financial affairs.

According to Kareem, “The Governor seems helpless against the alleged high-handedness of Madam Commissioner, leading to stagnation in various ministries and ongoing projects across the state.”

The group has publicly called for the Finance Commissioner to appear before the State House of Assembly this week, warning of severe implications should she refuse.

“We must hold her accountable for the financial decisions affecting our state’s development,” Kareem asserted.

Among the pressing issues is the non-release of funds earmarked for essential ministries, which has resulted in widespread delays, including obstruction of contracts with completed work and ongoing projects.

The CCM further alleged that Isaac is embroiled in a personal feud with two other cabinet members: Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Akogun Akinwumi Sowore, and Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Razaq Obe.

The Finance Commissioner was accused of withholding funds due to these ministries,—an act that Kareem described as “insider sabotage and a disturbing power struggle.

“How can a single individual repeatedly create problems for her colleagues? Does a disagreement have to sour relationships to this degree? It is counterproductive and harmful.”

As gathered, the situation has worsened for various projects, notably renovations at Akure Township Stadium. The Sunshine Football Club has been forced to temporarily relocate to Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode in Ogun State, due to the inadequate condition of their home ground, a situation compounded by the delayed release of funds for necessary improvements.

“The Governor had ordered the release of money for the stadium upgrade, but the Commissioner squandered valuable time, and inflation set in, affecting both the contractor’s budget and the club’s operations,” added Kareem.

The CCM’s claims did not end there. The group also expressed concern over Mrs. Isaac occupying the VIP Section of the Government House, which is equipped with about 40 rooms. The group alleged that the action was an effective way of siphoning funds that should be allocated to more pressing state needs.

The current arrangement, as gathered, has been forcing visiting dignitaries to the state to lodge in hotels, which has been draining state finances further.

The group painted a picture of a Finance Ministry being entrenched in purported financial misconduct, contending that Isaac has engaged in “underhand financial dealings” with bank officials since March of this year, particularly as new banks have replaced the financial institutions used during the administration of late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

“Both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) must scrutinize Mrs. Isaac’s activities along with the new banks,” Kareem urged.

“The welfare of Ondo State hangs in the balance, and we need clarity and accountability.”

Adding to the unease is the perceived fragile relationship between Isaac and the Governor. The CCM described her as a ‘benefactor’ for her role in thwarting previous attempts to impeach Aiyedatiwa during his tenure as Deputy Governor, leveraging her connections in the Presidency for support.

However, the group cautioned that those past contributions do not provide immunity from scrutiny, especially when the image of the governor is at stake.

“Alternatively, the Governor should not only relieve her of that powerful position but should equally find means of compensating her and allow the cause of governance to run seamlessly because a woman who is ‘fighting’ everybody including governor’s appointees; civil servants; tax collectors in IGR; and even the contractors, does not mean well for the state and should therefore be asked to take a back seat forthwith,” the group counseled.

The CCM also enjoined the Ilaje leadership to take urgent action toward rallying around the Governor to ensure that he could operate with a semblance of stability and support.

“It is imperative for our community, especially because the governor hails from Ilaje. The Ilaje leaders should step up and back him against what appears to be an internal administrative crisis,” implored Kareem.

The Ondo State government is at a precipice, he continued, saying with inquiries into the Finance Commissioner’s conduct, spotlighting critical issues of governance and accountability.

The group also cautioned that as the election looms ever closer, the stakes are higher than ever; and failure to address the structural issues would be a risk, not only to the Aiyedatiwa administration but also to the broader interests of the citizens of Ondo State.

The revelation of internal strife and allegations of financial misconduct, according to CCM, has unveiled a precarious situation for the governor and his cabinet. The group warned that the narrative of progress could quickly devolve into a saga of scandal unless addressed with urgency and transparency.

The CCM stated further that all eyes would remain fixed on Ondo as the pressure mounts for accountability and a resolution to the unfolding drama.

OGUN STATE POLICE COMMAND INVESTIGATES SUSPECTED SUICIDE IN LAFENWA

The Divisional Police Officer at the Lafenwa Division of the Ogun State Police Command has received a report on an alleged suspected case of suicide.

The owner of Authentic Hotel on Soyoye Road, Odeyemi Adeboye, who made the report on October 10, 2024, at approximately 3:30 p.m. said
the manager of his hotel raised an alarm concerning a guest, identified as 32-year-old Lanre Ogungbe, who had checked in for a short rest.

According to him, when the receptionist noticed his prolonged absence, she went to check on him and found his lifeless body on the bed. She immediately informed the manager, who then alerted the hotel owner.

The Police Command noted that upon receiving the report, detectives were immediately deployed to the scene and discovered Lanre Ogungbe’s body, along with an empty bottle of Lakoko alcohol and another bottle of Snipper, suspected to have been consumed by him.

The Police confirmed that no signs of violence were evident on his body. His remains were transported to General Hospital Ijaye, where he was pronounced dead, and subsequently taken to Ijaye Morgue for a post-mortem examination.

It added that a thorough investigation is currently underway.
