As the redevelopment of the Tolu Schools Complex continues, the Lagos State Government has launched a safety training initiative for school principals and head teachers. This effort, organized by the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools, SCRPS in partnership with the Lagos State Safety Commission, aims to instill essential safety measures at construction sites.
During the event, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hon. Jamiu Alli-Balogun emphasized the commitment of the Sanwo-Olu administration to improve educational standards in the state. He noted that the redevelopment began last year, following the Governor’s approval for a complete overhaul of the schools in the complex.
Expressing satisfaction with the progress, Alli-Balogun highlighted the construction of new buildings and ongoing rehabilitation efforts, noting significant improvements since his last visit. He urged school leaders to adopt the safety measures taught in the workshop and to pass this knowledge on to students, who are particularly vulnerable to potential injuries during construction.
“The essence of this safety training is to prevent casualties among students while work is ongoing,” he stated. He praised the Governor’s support for the education sector, urging principals and head teachers to diligently fulfill their responsibilities, which will enhance student outcomes.
Alli-Balogun also expressed relief that there have been no reported accidents at the construction sites since the project’s inception nine months ago, assuring continued support for teachers’ welfare.
Chairman of the SCRPS, Mr. Hakeem Smith, highlighted that the Tolu School Complex covers 11.73 hectares and includes 31 secondary schools and five primary schools, serving approximately 19,714 students. He stressed the need for rigorous safety protocols to protect students and assist contractors in completing projects on time.
To recognize their role, principals and head teachers were designated as SCRPS Safety Ambassadors and received safety kits, including helmets, vests, and boots.
The event was attended by notable figures, including the Executive Chairman of Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government, Hon. Fatai Adekunle Ayoola, and the ANCOPSS Chairman of the local government, along with other distinguished guests.
