Ogun Police Command Investigates Ritual Abduction, Discovery of Human Remains in Oja Odan

The Oja Odan Police Division in Ogun State on December 16, 2024, received a report of a disturbing case involving abduction and alleged ritual practices.

In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola, noted that at approximately 4:30 p.m., a man identified as Oladeyo Idowu, from the School 4 area of Oja Odan, arrived at the station to report the abduction of Regina Oladeyo.

The suspect in the case, Monday Ogunniyi, a resident of the Okegbala area of Oja Odan, was subsequently implicated in a chain of alarming revelations.

SP Odutola said police investigations led to the discovery of Regina Oladeyo at the residence of Monday Ogunniyi, who during questioning, admitted to abducting her but alleged that he and the complainant, Oladeyo Idowu, were involved in ritual activities that required human remains.

”Further investigations revealed an arrangement between the two men to procure human parts from a decomposing corpse for their ritual purposes.”

The Statement noted that a team of detectives was dispatched to a location near a river in the Afige area of Oja Odan, where they uncovered a dried human skeleton dressed in female clothing. Evidence gathered at the scene corroborated Ogunniyi’s confession, which implicated Oladeyo Idowu in the storage and dismemberment of the corpse.

It said police authorities also recovered key exhibits, including photographs, that are believed to be linked to the suspects’ ritual activities and the case has been escalated to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.

The Ogun State Police Command assured the public of a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served, emphasizing its commitment to tackling criminal activities of this nature.

PROF. OLUFEMI IDOWU EMERGES 10TH PROVOST OF LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

The Lagos State University College of Medicine ,LASUCOM on Tuesday, 17th December 2024, conducted an election exercise for the position of Provost of the College with the current Deputy Provost, Professor Olufemi Idowu emerging as the winner.

Professor Idowu defeated Professor Mobolaji Oludara, the former Acting Provost, with 108 to 21 votes to emerge as the 10th Provost of the College.

The exercise, which took place at the Medical Sciences Auditorium, witnessed an impressive voter turnout comprised of members of the college’s Academic Staff Assembly with a total of 129 votes cast.

The process was overseen by the Chief Electoral Officer and Registrar of the University, Mr. Emmanuel A. FANU, who was represented by the College Secretary – Mr O.A. Oyebanjo, and lauded by observers for its transparency and adherence to electoral standards.

Speaking immediately after the announcement of his victory, Professor Idowu expressed gratitude to the college community and reaffirmed his commitment to fostering a culture of academic excellence and inclusive leadership.

Reacting, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM congratulated Prof. Idowu on his election and wished him a successful and impactful tenure.

The newly elected Provost, Professor Olufemi Idowu, will assume office on Thursday, 26th December 2024, following the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent Provost, Prof. Abiodun Adewuya, on Wednesday, 25th December 2024.

Lagos State Government Hosts 2024 Women’s Assembly to Empower, Celebrate Women

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to advancing, including, and empowering women, describing them as the pillars of communities, contributing in numerous ways as mothers, entrepreneurs, educators, and leaders.

Governor Sanwo-Olu stated this in his keynote address at the 2024 Women’s Assembly for Local Government and Local Council Development Areas organized by the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, WAPA.

The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Governor, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, described the assembly as a critical platform for celebrating women’s contributions and tackling challenges affecting their well-being.

He restated his administration’s commitment to prioritizing women through policies and programmes aimed at economic empowerment, political inclusion, and grassroots engagement, highlighting initiatives such as skill acquisition programmes, micro-credit schemes, and entrepreneurial support to foster financial independence among women.

The governor also stressed the need for more women in leadership roles and governance to create a more inclusive society. “Women are the pillars of our communities, contributing as mothers, entrepreneurs, educators, and leaders,” Sanwo-Olu said. “When women succeed, families are strengthened, and society is transformed.”

He lauded the efforts of the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, for her leadership in advancing programmes that benefit women and families across Lagos State.

The governor also expressed gratitude to his wife, the First Lady, Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, and the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, for their steadfast support and advocacy for women and children.

The Special Guest of Honour and the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu noted that all must stand united in advocating for women’s rights and opportunities, ensuring that women no matter their status and location in the state are equipped with the tools and resources they need to thrive.

Mrs. Sanwo-Olu said by encouraging active participation in governance, the voices of women can be amplified in decision-making processes, adding that raising awareness on the prevention of domestic violence and supporting victims, all stakeholders can create safer and more inclusive communities.

In her welcome address, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, echoed the governor’s words, describing the assembly as a call to action for addressing women’s health, economic stability, and political representation.

She announced that the assembly will feature free health screenings, including checks for blood pressure, cancer, and eye health, alongside discussions on nutrition and health insurance options provided by the Lagos State Health Management Agency, LASHMA.

The commissioner also emphasized the importance of economic empowerment to break the cycle of poverty, highlighting the state government’s efforts to encourage women’s active participation in politics and leadership.

In his presentation, a renowned psychiatrist and clinical psychologist, who spoke on mental health issues; Professor A. Olurotimi Coker noted that common mental disorders such as anxiety disorders and depression are on the increase in Nigeria and 1 in 4 people will eventually develop or live with some forms of mental disorders.

Coker urged women to recognize their stressors and deal with them, take breaks or mini vacations, improve their social relationships, set goals, become emotionally resilient, try out music and dance therapy, cultivate healthy lifestyles, and seek medical support when necessary.

Other notable speakers were the founder of the Menopause Support Initiative, Mosunmola Dosunmu, who addressed managing menopause; and a registered dietitian, Mr. Olusola Malomo, who delivered insights on nutrition and healthy living.

The event drew participants from diverse backgrounds, including market women, artisans, widows, and women from rural and riverine communities across Lagos State.

Responding on behalf of media practitioners present at the event, the National Chairman of the Education Writers’ Association of Nigeria, EWAN, Mr. Mojeed Alabi appreciated the management of UNILAG for the open door which the media have enjoyed over the years.

LAWMA TRAINS STAFF OF EKITI STATE WASTE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has commenced a three-day training course on a professional approach to waste management for some staff of the Ekiti State Waste Management Authority, EKSWAMA.

The EKSWAMA team, led by its Director-General, Mr. Olasunkanmi Onipede, was received by the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, and his management team.

Welcoming them at LAWMA headquarters, Ijora Olopa, Gbadegesin expressed his delight, stressing that the Authority was always open to resource sharing on modern waste management techniques, just as it had done with other states and some West African countries.

In his words, “ LAWMA was initially established in 1977 as a refuse collection board, but the current structure of the authority came about in 1999. The incumbent president of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who was the Governor of Lagos State, then restructured LAWMA into a scientific and professional waste management authority.

Since then, LAWMA has kept coming up with innovations. Managing the waste of 23 million people who generate 13 tonnes of waste daily is not child’s play, we continue to learn, unlearn, and relearn in the process of waste management”

“Today, we have incorporated over 400 PSPs, which have at least two compactors each to evacuate household waste across the state. Currently, LAWMA is working round the clock and transiting from a linear into a circular economy system, embracing the reduce, reuse and recycle model. This is the best place you can come to learn, as we have the best hands who will share both theoretical and practical insights about waste management with you. I assure you that at the end of the three days of training, you will still have to come back for more.’’ he noted.

Responding, the Director-General of EKSWAMA, Mr. Olasunkanmi Onipede, noted that the purpose of the training was to understudy LAWMA’s waste management operation, which according to him, was worth emulating, to be replicated in Ekiti State.

He said: “Coming from a state where we manage the waste of nearly 3.5 million people to Lagos State where over 23 million residents’ waste is managed, means that we are in the right place to learn from. What we are concerned about, is how we can replicate Lagos Waste Management system in Ekiti State.

From all we have seen, we are optimistic that this training is just a step toward more partnerships with LAWMA. We are ready to drink from your wealth of knowledge and get EKSWAMA’s regulations right. We are glad to be here and thank you for having us’’.

Also speaking, LAWMA’s Head of PSP Domestic Services, Dr. Tunde Suleiman, who took the team through the first lecture on the general overview of solid waste management principles and practices, highlighted the processes involved in waste management from collection to disposal.

He said: “The waste management sector keeps evolving and that is why in LAWMA, we emphasise environmental best practices in the industry. A lot of processes are involved, from the collection of waste to the treatment, transportation, and disposal stages, as the Authority manages different types of waste ranging from hazardous, commercial, recyclable, organic, healthcare, as well as domestic waste.”

Sulaiman however, noted that the Authority had adopted advocacy and sensitisation as essential tools in managing waste in a megacity like Lagos, adding that sensitising the people complimented LAWMA’s operational efforts.

”If we have to roll out all the compactors we have to evacuate waste in public spaces, we will still need more and that is too expensive to fund. Therefore, we adopted continuous advocacy and sensitisation, to work on the mindset of people, our focus is attitudinal change.

If residents embrace a positive change towards the environment, we won’t have to be clearing the roads every day. So, the challenge we have is residents’ poor attitude to the environment.  Enforcement on the other hand is always a last result’’. he stressed

The director of Medical Health and Safety Services, Dr. Mrs. Modupe Okoh, gave the general safety talk, while the director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Folashade Kadiri, took the team through the schedule of activities of the three-day training. The team was also shown short documentaries of LAWMA’s activities.

The three-day training would cover all the core areas of the Authority’s waste management system: ranging from operations, landfill management, advocacy, Admin and Human resources, Circular Economy, waste management finance, environmental health, legal services, monitoring, and compliance among others.

Field trips will be undertaken to the Olusosun landfill, waste-to-energy plant at IKosi-Ketu, and LAWMA Mushin operational district.

CEMESO, IFEX UNVEIL DOCUMENTARY TO ADDRESS INTERNET SHUT DOWN, DIGITAL RIGHTS

Digital rights advocates, journalists, academics, and members of the tech community have converged in Lagos to address the challenges and emerging trends related to internet restrictions in Nigeria.  

They also touched on issues around accountability in cases of digital disruptions, especially during crisis and conflict situations at a documentary screening and discussions with the theme: “Exploring the Impact of Internet Shutdowns: organised by the Centre for Media and Society, CEMESO with supported by IFEX-Right to Information Project.

In his welcome address, Executive Director of CEMESO, Akin Akingbulu, highlighted the significance of the event in light of the growing global trend of state-imposed internet disruptions, emphasizing the internet’s role as a fundamental tool for communication, education, and economic development.

Akingbulu while warning against misuse of the internet as a mechanism for censorship and control, called on stakeholders to advocate for policies that protect digital rights and ensure that the internet remains a bastion of democracy and development.  

Programme Manager at CEMESO, Timothy Bamidele explained that the documentary stands as a powerful call to action, emphasizing the need to protect digital rights and ensure freedom of expression.

Bamidele noted that it also highlights the resilience of Nigerians who, despite facing internet restrictions, have used digital platforms to advocate for their rights and connect with global movements.  

On his part, specialist in Media and Information Literacy, Olunifesi Suraj highlighted the importance of digital rights in fostering democracy and economic development, mechanisms for addressing digital disruptions and resilience in crises and conflict situations.

Suraj called on the federal government to provide a conducive environment such as affordable, reliable and strong internet infrastructure, while stressing on the need for constant engagement, promotion of  positive narratives among other innovative ideas on digital rights  to achieve information superiority.

UNILAG Mass Communication Department Produces First Alumnus to Deliver Inaugural Lecture

The Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, UNILAG is on the verge of a significant milestone as one of its alumni, Professor Ismail Adegboyega Ibraheem, is billed to deliver an inaugural lecture on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

This marks the first time in the department’s 58-year history that an alumnus will deliver such a lecture, underscoring the department’s legacy within the 62-year-old institution.

Professor Ibraheem, a renowned academic in Journalism and Communication Studies, will speak on the theme, “Casino Journalism and the End of History,” a subject aimed at addressing the critical ethical, managerial, and funding crises plaguing the global media industry.

The lecture will provide insights into the evolving challenges faced by journalism, particularly in Nigeria’s diverse socio-political landscape.

According to the professor, the lecture is his contribution to the global body of knowledge, tackling the issues facing media practices worldwide.

The lecture is significant not only because it will be delivered by the department’s first alumnus but also because it is the first of its kind since a similar lecture was given by a departmental lecturer 20 years ago.

Commenting on the importance of the event, the planning committee chairman and former Head of the Department, Professor Adepoju Tejumaye, emphasized the relevance of Professor Ibraheem’s lecture in today’s media environment. He described the lecture as a timely intervention in addressing the multifaceted challenges facing the media industry globally and within Nigeria.

“The topic reflects the depth of thought and quality of work ongoing in our department. At a time when the media should serve as a compass to educate, inform, and direct the public with fairness and balance, this lecture is both necessary and significant,” said Professor Tejumaye. He urged guests to be seated by 3:30 p.m. for the event.

The event, which will be chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, is expected to draw a distinguished audience, including past vice-chancellors Professor Rahamon Bello and Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.

Among the dignitaries slated to attend is Nigeria’s former Minister of Sports, Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi; the Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr. Lanre Isa Onilu; and the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Oloyede. Representatives from various high commissions and embassies in Nigeria are also expected.

A Distinguished Career

Professor Ibraheem’s career highlights his commitment to academic excellence and professional leadership. After graduating from UNILAG in 1990, he pursued a Master’s in Political Science in 1993 before earning a British Chevening Scholarship in 1996 to study Mass Communication at the University of Leicester, UK. He later completed his PhD in Media and Politics in 2004.

He began his professional journey in 1990 with Nigeria’s Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), overseeing its Media and Governance Programme and coordinating the Journalists’ Outreach for Human Rights, JOHR. Over the years, he has held prestigious positions, including Country Programme Director for the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, CIPR, and Executive Director of the Centre for African Resources Research and Development, CARRD in the UK.

In 2011, Professor Ibraheem returned to UNILAG as a lecturer and was elevated to the rank of professor in 2020. With over 75 academic publications to his name, he has supervised more than 150 Master’s dissertations and 10 PhD theses.

Beyond academics, Professor Ibraheem is the Chairman of The Cable News Foundation, the Network Coordinator for the Afretec Network at UNILAG, and the Director of Uptake for the African Cities Research Consortium. He also oversees UNILAG’s globalisation efforts as the Director of International Relations, Partnerships, and Prospects

First Bank Debunks Reports on Fraud Allegations

First Bank Nigeria Limited has denied and debunked a viral media report of an alleged fraud linked to an employee of FirstBank Nigeria.

In a press statement, the Acting Group Head of Marketing & Corporate Communications, Olayinka Ijabiyi, stated, “We have been made aware of a recent publication by Tech Cabal containing allegations of fraud involving our institution. We wish to categorically state that the story is entirely unfounded and not supported by factual evidence.”
