The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has assured residents of its commitment to maintaining a clean and liveable Lagos city in 2025, even as it called for residents’ cooperation in achieving this feat.

Managing Director, LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, made the remarks during the annual Christmas Carol and End of the Year Thanksgiving service, held at the authority’s headquarters, Ijora-Olopa.

The annual event is to appreciate God for his goodness and blessings in the outgoing year. It was attended by LAWMA’s management team, staff, neighbours, friends, and well-wishers among others.

Dr. Gbadegesin thanked God for His mercies and blessings upon the workers of the authority in the outgoing year despite challenges.

He said “Today is not a day for speeches but a day for praises and thanksgiving. I appreciate God for His mercies and blessings upon the staff of LAWMA, and I pray He will continue to preserve us as we dedicate our time to service.”

Also, Gbadegesin appreciated members of staff for their support, encouraging them to keep up the good work. While wishing residents a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year, he urged them to always carry out their own obligations towards the environment and to support the efforts of the authority, in maintaining a clean and liveable Lagos city in the coming years.

The Executive Director, Finance, Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, also thanked God for preserving the lives of LAWMA staff, and for making them witness this year’s thanks-giving service, noting that it was important to keep praising God.

He acknowledged the efforts of the LAWMA boss, towards improving waste management operations in the state, to achieve a people-friendly environment.

Delivering a sermon on the event’s theme, “With a grateful heart”, the chapel’s President, Mr. Olawumi Oluwaseyi, urged people to always express gratitude to God, for consistent protection from danger, as he committed every member of the authority to God’s hands, seeking for his grace and mercy.

The first Bible reading of the day was read by the LAWMA boss, taken from the book of Genesis 3:8-15, while the second reading was from Genesis 22:15-18, by the Director of Finance.

Other management staff who read Bible passages were Mrs. Folashade Kadiri, Head of Public Affairs; Mr. Adewumi Adetona, Head of Advocacy; Dr. Essien Nsuabia, head of Waste Management Development Research; Mrs. Opayemi Abimbola, Head of Commercial Services; Mrs. Bola Adewumi, head of LAWMA Academy; Dr. Modupe Okoh, head of Medical Services, Health and Safety, among others.

The Lagos State Office of Political, Legislative, and Civic Engagement has held a one-day Advocacy on Voters’ Education to build a more inclusive government and a society actively participating in the democratic process.

The event was held at The Palace of De- Ovitotode Toyi 1 Aholu Sano of Ikoga-Zebbe Kingdom, Badagry, and Lagos State.

Addressing the participants, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative & Civic Engagement, Dr. Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen, said the Ikoga-Zebbe Community was selected for the event because it has 25 adjourning communities, noting that Advocacy such as this brings the government closer to the people.

He said voter education is a vital step towards empowering communities, and strengthening democracy and that citizens can only play an active role as an electorate when they are fully informed, well-educated, and equipped to make reasonable decisions.

“I want us to know that the decisions we make in those elections will affect not only our immediate communities but also the future of our great country. This is why our efforts to educate you all as voters are very critical. Every vote cast must be an informed one. Every citizen must understand the electoral process, the importance of their participation, and the consequences of their decisions” He noted.

Highlighting other activities of the Office, The Special Adviser explained that the “Sanwo-Olu Listens”, a social intervention programme has continued to put smiles on the faces of the vulnerable residents of Lagos by addressing their diverse needs such as medical, business, education, accommodation.

Intimating the participants about other activities of the Office, the Special Adviser said that the office also runs the Mother Infant and Child Development (MICHD) Program, a cornerstone of the Womb to School initiatives programme, and the Citizensgate App, a one-stop shop for all Lagos State Government services for the residents of Lagos, that will assist the resident to pass complaints, comments, and commendations to the government in the comfort of their homes/offices.

Taking the people on Voters’ Education, the Deputy Director, Civic and Voters Education, Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASEIC), Mrs. Ola Dawodu said that enlightening the electorates will help them make informed decisions, understand their rights and responsibilities, and participate fully in the electoral process.

In a similar vein, the Chairman of the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, (CDHR) Comrade Debo Adeniran said electing a government that is responsive to the citizens is the right of the people, and exercising this right will ensure that dividends of good governance are spread across all citizens.

He advised the participants that they should see themselves as part of the government by participating at all levels of governance and holding the government accountable when necessary.

While appreciating the Lagos State Government, His Royal Highness De- Ovitotode Toyi 1 (FCCN), Aholu Sano of Ikoga-Zebbe Kingdom, Badagry said the knowledge gained at the event will be further disseminated at various community meetings for the benefit of those citizens that are not present at the event.

Stating some of the challenges faced by the community, His Royal Highness also said the Ikoga-Zebbe Kingdom has benefited from the Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Administration, especially during the distribution of food box palliatives.

He, however, noted that there is a need to renovate some of the roads leading to the community, build additional functional maternity centres for the community, and bring more beneficial government programmes to the community for the benefit of the residents.

Appreciating the participants, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Engr. Sholabomi Shasore said all the challenges raised by the residents have been duly noted and will be channelled to the appropriate authorities for speedy solutions.

Also present at the event is His Royal Majesty, Oba Patinvoh Abiodun, Aholu of Yafin Kingdom, Hon. Whingan Sesi representing Badagry Federal Constituency, represented by Honorable Pius Whingan and some members of Community Development Committee Badagry.

Why Nigeria Needs Effective Funding System for Tobacco Control

Tobacco use remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, contributing to a myriad of health issues including cardiovascular diseases, respiratory illnesses, and various cancers.

According to the World Health Organization, WHO, tobacco kills more than 8 million people each year globally, with a substantial portion of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries including Nigeria.

To combat this growing epidemic, effective funding for tobacco control initiatives has been identified as important as the country grapples with other myriad public health challenges. This article explores Nigeria’s current state of tobacco control funding, the challenges faced, and recommendations for enhancing funding effectiveness.

Nigeria has made strides in tobacco control through the enactment of the National Tobacco Control Act in 2015. The act aims to regulate tobacco production, distribution, and consumption.

The law is aligned with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, FCTC, which Nigeria ratified in 2005. The Act mandates the establishment of the National Tobacco Control Committee, which is responsible for overseeing the implementation of tobacco control measures.

Despite these legislative efforts, tobacco control funding remains inadequate. Major support for advocacy and awareness components is drawn from the support provided by international partners committed to fostering a tobacco-free Nigeria. This support has been instrumental in the achievements recorded in tobacco control initiatives in Nigeria. However, reliance on external funding limits the sustainability and scalability of these programs.

However, there is an urgent need for the Federal Government to strategically focus on the rising public health challenges posed by Non Communicable Diseases, NCDs particularly the use of tobacco.

The Nigerian government currently allocates a minimal percentage of its health budget to tobacco control.

According to the WHO, countries should allocate at least 2% of their health budgets to tobacco control efforts. This figure is significantly lower, resulting in inadequate resources for effective implementation of tobacco control programs.

Stakeholders within the corridors of influence in Nigeria must show more commitment to tobacco control especially in its budget advocacy efforts. Relevant regulatory agencies within the health sector must have adequate statutory allocations essential for tobacco control.

In Nigeria, tobacco interests and the industry have historically influenced policy decisions, leading to a lack of political will to prioritize tobacco control funding. The tobacco industry often employs tactics such as lobbying and misinformation campaigns to undermine public health efforts, which can deter policymakers from supporting robust funding initiatives.

Public awareness about the health risks of tobacco use and the importance of funding tobacco control initiatives is lacking. This gap in knowledge affects the public’s ability to advocate and campaign for better funding and policy changes. Without a strong public voice, it becomes challenging to mobilize resources for tobacco control.

Recommendations for Effective Funding

A significant step towards effective tobacco control funding is increasing domestic funding. The Nigerian government should prioritize tobacco control in its health budget and allocate a specific percentage of health funds to tobacco control initiatives. This approach will reduce reliance on external funding and ensure the sustainability of programmes.

Implementing higher taxes on tobacco products is a proven strategy for reducing consumption and generating revenue that can be reinvested in health programmes.

According to the WHO, countries that have raised tobacco taxes have seen a decrease in smoking rates. The revenue generated from these taxes can be earmarked for tobacco control initiatives, including public awareness campaigns and cessation programmes.

Stronger collaboration with local NGOs and international organizations can enhance funding for tobacco control. These strategic partnerships leverage resources and expertise from these organizations. By working together, stakeholders can implement comprehensive tobacco control programs that address prevention, cessation, and regulatory measures.

Public education campaigns are crucial for raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and the need for funding tobacco control initiatives. The government, in collaboration with NGOs, should invest in campaigns that inform the public about the health risks associated with tobacco and the importance of supporting tobacco control measures. These campaigns can mobilize public support and pressure policymakers to increase funding.

To secure funding, it is essential to foster political will at all levels of government. Engaging policymakers, providing them with evidence-based research on the impact of tobacco use, and demonstrating the economic benefits of tobacco control can help build support. Advocating for tobacco control as a public health priority can shift the narrative and encourage policymakers to allocate more resources.

Effective funding for tobacco control in Nigeria is critical for addressing the public health crisis posed by tobacco use. By increasing domestic funding, implementing tobacco taxes, strengthening partnerships, enhancing public awareness, and fostering political will, Nigeria can create a sustainable and effective tobacco control framework.

It is imperative that all stakeholders—government, NGOs, and the public—collaborate to secure the necessary funding and resources to protect the health of Nigerians and combat the tobacco epidemic.

Governor Sanwo-Olu Commends Origin Tech Group on Pioneering Lagos’Food Security Transformation

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to increasing food security and infrastructure development from its current 18% to over 50%.

He made the assurance during a working visit to the Lagos Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Park known as LHP in Ketu, Ereyun in Epe.

This transformative project, championed by Origin Tech Group, is set to become the largest food logistics hub in Africa and the second largest globally, after the iconic Rungis International Market in France.

The groundbreaking 220-hectare facility initiated less than two years ago, promises to revolutionise Lagos’ food ecosystem by improving accessibility, stabilising market prices, and reducing post-harvest losses.

Governor Sanwo-Olu revealed that the first phase of the project is slated for completion by the second quarter of 2025, emphasising his administration’s commitment to the project given its critical role
in safeguarding the state’s food supply and security.

Governor Sanwo-Olu disclosed the dates for the completion of the project during a working visit with members of the State Executive Council, the leadership and members of the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems led by its Commissioner, Abisola Olusanya, government officials, and journalists to the Food Logistics hub in the Ketu-Ereyun, in the Epe Division of Lagos State.

During his visit, the Governor highlighted the importance of the project, stating, “This hub represents a pivotal step toward achieving food sufficiency and affordability for Lagosians. By reducing wastage and optimising supply chains, we aim to stabilise food prices and mitigate the impact of economic disruptions.”

The Governor also announced plans to replicate middle-level market hubs across Ajah, Agege, Oregun, and Ikorodu, similar to the pioneering initiative in Idi-Oro, Mushin that was launched last year. These hubs will serve as distribution points connected to the Lagos Central Food Security and Logistics Park in Epe food logistics park, ensuring seamless and efficient food supply throughout Lagos as well as bordering communities.

Executive Chairman of Origin Tech Group, Prince S. J. Samuel, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu’s foresight, noting, “This project is a testament to the visionary leadership of His Excellency, our amiable governor, and his EXCO, especially under the direct supervision of the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems in
Lagos state.

Despite economic challenges, we are committed to delivering this
world-class facility on schedule’’. Samuel assured that the project would be delivered before the second anniversary of the Governor’s second term. Upon completion, Lagosians can anticipate a 50% reduction in food prices due to integrated facilities like cold and dry storage, Africa’s largest abattoir, and a jetty for streamlined goods transportation.

The facility will feature A 14,000-capacity abattoir on 1,000 hectares of land, the size of 11 football fields of dry storage for agricultural produce, A 250mm dual carriageway concrete road network for efficient logistics, and a jetty to facilitate waterway transportation across Lagos.

This audacious project is poised to strengthen Lagos’ agricultural value chain, create thousands of jobs, and position the state as a leader in sustainable food systems in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Governor Sanwo-Olu remarked, “We are writing our destiny
with this initiative. This hub will transform Lagos’ food systems, stabilize prices, and provide Lagosians with the food sufficiency and adequacy they deserve.”

As the largest food logistics hub in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Lagos Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Park will serve as a benchmark for innovation in food security and infrastructure. The partnership between Lagos State and Origin Tech Group exemplifies a commitment to sustainable development and economic growth.

With its state-of-the-art facilities and strategic vision, the hub is set to solidify Lagos’ position as an economic powerhouse while addressing the critical challenges of food security in the region.

Lagos State Hosts Minister of Women Affairs During 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

In commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, MWAPA has hosted the Honourable Federal Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Imani Ibrahim, for an impactful meeting with survivors of domestic and gender-based violence.

The event, held at the premises of the Lagos State Waterways Authority, was themed “Towards Beijing +30: Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls.” It highlighted the progress made in combating gender-based violence and underscored the urgent need for collective action to address the issue.

The Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to eliminating violence against women and girls through policies, survivor support programs, and public awareness campaigns.

She emphasized that domestic and gender-based violence is a societal issue requiring the united effort of all stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, and community leaders.

Hon. Bolaji Dada applauded the resilience and courage of survivors, pledging continued support and advocacy for a violence-free society where women and girls can thrive.

Speaking at the event, the Federal Minister for Women Affairs Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim commended the Lagos State Government for its innovative empowerment programs and effective strategies in addressing gender-based violence.

She noted that Lagos serves as a benchmark for other states, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, DSVA, and other institutions under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The Minister called for victims of domestic violence to break their silence and share their experiences, assuring them of support at both state and federal levels. She stressed that the economic empowerment of women is key to fostering resilience and ensuring their contribution to nation-building.

During her address, the Honourable Minister expressed her readiness to work closely with Lagos State to establish systems that encourage victims to report gender-based violence freely. She also promised to advocate for increased federal support for victims and the implementation of policies that promote the safety and well-being of women and girls nationwide.

Survivors at the event shared their stories, highlighting how Lagos State’s interventions have positively impacted their lives. The Federal Minister encouraged survivors to remain strong and become advocates for public enlightenment against gender-based violence.

In the spirit of the season, the Honourable Federal Minister came with thoughtful gifts for each of the survivors, showing them they were loved and valued. This gesture reinforced the government’s commitment to supporting survivors and building a society where women and girls can live free of violence.

The Federal Minister also urged parents to be vigilant and proactive in addressing changes in their children’s behavior to prevent societal harm.

IHRD 2024: CAPPA Decries Crackdown On Free Speech, Assembly

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa, CAPPA has called on relevant authorities at all levels to uphold the constitutional rights of citizens to express themselves freely and assemble peacefully.

CAPPA in a statement signed by its Media and Communication Officer, Robert Egbe made the call against the backdrop of the 2024 International Human Rights Day with the theme: “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now”.

It affirmed that this year’s theme underscores the essential role of human rights in fostering democracy, challenging systemic barriers, promoting social and economic justice, and building a peaceful future for all.

CAPPA noted that the arbitrary arrests and detention of activists and protesters must stop immediately, and those currently in custody and being prosecuted for exercising their rights should be released unconditionally, with all frivolous charges against them dropped.

It also urged the government to thoroughly investigate allegations of abuse and excessive force by security agencies and hold those responsible accountable.

In particular, free speech and the right to peaceful assembly form the beating heart of any democracy. They provide a vital space for contesting ideas, holding power accountable, and amplifying marginalised voices in governance processes. These values create a marketplace of ideas where the strongest, most equitable, and forward-thinking solutions rise to prominence, driving societal progress.

Yet, this year’s International Human Rights Day celebration is taking place against the troubling backdrop of an increasing crackdown on free speech and peaceful assembly in Nigeria.

CAPPA is deeply concerned about the escalating criminalisation of civic engagement, evidenced by the Gestapo-style kidnappings, physical attacks, arbitrary arrests, and the detention of activists, dissenting voices, and journalists exercising their fundamental rights to freedom of assembly, association, and expression.

For instance, in August 2024, Nigerian security agencies reportedly used excessive force to suppress protests against rising costs of living and poor governance across the country, resulting in at least 24 fatalities and the arrest of over a thousand demonstrators.

Similarly, in November 2024, the detention of 29 minors aged 14 to 17, as well as the victimisation of young Nigerian activists for participating in the #EndBadGovernnance protests, with charges that included treason, exemplified the disproportionate and punitive measures increasingly deployed against legitimate dissent.

These actions are not isolated incidents but are part of a broader trend of shrinking civic space and the use of anti-terrorism and cybercrime laws to undermine human rights and intimidate civic actors. Sadly, they directly contradict Nigeria’s commitments under international human rights frameworks and the principles enshrined in its Constitution. By criminalising protests and targeting those who demand accountability, the government erodes not only the rights of its citizens but also the foundational values of a free and just society.

We urge the government to thoroughly investigate allegations of abuse and excessive force by security agencies and hold those responsible accountable. Additionally, we demand that civil society organisations be allowed to operate without undue restrictions or intimidation, recognising their critical role in promoting democracy and social justice.

Lagos State Education District Six Officially Welcomes 155 New Teachers

The Tutor General/Permanent Secretary Lagos State Education District VI, Mrs. Yusf Mojisola Christiana has officially welcomed 155 new teachers to the District, urging them to conduct themselves in a manner that earns the respect of their students.

In a ceremony to onboard newly employed teachers, Mrs. Yusff emphasized their role in shaping the minds of future generations. “Your job is not only to teach but to mould and guide our students in their academic and social interactions, helping them become good citizens of Lagos State and Nigeria,” she said.

On her part, the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mrs. Oluyinka Akintola, encouraged the new teachers to familiarize themselves with the civil service rules, which serve as a guide for their conduct in the civil service. She also stressed the importance of diligence, dedication, and punctuality in their duties.

Earlier, the Director of Schools Support and Special Duties, Mr. Olayinka Ogunsola, cautioned the new teachers about the dangers of the “3 Is”: illegal admission, illegal collection of money from students, and illicit affairs with students. He also urged them to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in the line of their duties.

Traffic Alert: Ogun Police Command Works to Clear Blockage on Sagamu Expressway

The Ogun State Police Command, through its Warewa Division, says it is currently addressing a blockage at the entrance of the long bridge leading toward Ibadan on the Sagamu expressway.

A statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, SP Omolola Odutola, says efforts are underway to remove the obstruction, with a crane already on-site to facilitate the process.

Drivers have been advised to consider alternative routes and remain patient as the situation is being resolved. Commuters stuck in traffic are also urged to cooperate with law enforcement and avoid dangerous maneuvers.

”Reports indicate that some drivers have resorted to driving against traffic, which poses significant risks to other road users. The Motor Traffic Division has stated that it will take action to restrain violators and ensure the safety of all motorists.”

BISHOP OF LAGOS WEST INAUGURATES IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEE FOR THE PROPOSED ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF IKORODU

The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Lagos West, Rt Rev’d Dr James Olusola Odedeji has expressed optimism that the proposed Diocese of Ikorodu is predestined to be a reality.

He stated this while inaugurating the Implementation Committee for the planned Diocese at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Ireshe Road, Ikorodu.

According to the Bishop, “Ikorodu Diocese has been predestined and the Almighty that started the good work would get it completed in the mighty name of Jesus.”

The Right Reverend Odedeji urged members of the Implementation Committee to be focused and allow themselves to be used as a solid foundation for God to build His church.

“You should allow your names to be written in gold.  You should carry out the assignment diligently, be loyal to God and be absolutely obedient to the constituted authority in promoting  God’s mission,” the Bishop charged.

He later administered the Oath of Obedience and Loyalty on the members drawn from all the five Archdeaconries in the proposed Ikorodu Diocese.

Committee Chairman, Mr Tunde Gbolade had earlier in a meeting reiterated the commitment of the team towards achieving its objectives.

The Bishop had during a visit to Ikorodu on August 14, 2024 announced his intention to allow the Archdeaconries of Ikorodu, Ikorodu North, Ijede, Imota and Owutu constitutes the proposed Diocese of Ikorodu.

Lead Resource at Safe Schools Lagos, Dr. Bisi Esuruoso has been awarded as a Universal Peace Ambassador at the Universal Peace Federation, UK annual Peace Council in Central London (Lancaster Gate).

The award/ recognition was bestowed on Dr. Esuruoso on Saturday, 7th December 2024.

The Universal Peace Federation is dedicated to achieving world peace and is in general consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

Dr. Esuruoso has stamped her footprints in the education space, safety and promotion of peace. She has also been a mentor for the younger generation.

This safety champion has over the years provided leadership in every sphere she has spread her tentacles to.
