In a momentous and history-making event, Hon. Tunbosun Haruna Aruwe has officially took the oath of office as the Executive Chairman of Mushin Local Government, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the leadership of the area.

The swearing-in ceremony, held on Sunday, July 27, 2025, was not only symbolic but also monumental, as it featured the formal inauguration of all 57 newly elected Chairmen across Lagos State’s Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

In his address, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, emphasized that leadership is not just about capability, but about trust.

He charged all sworn-in Chairmen to lead with purpose, accountability, and integrity, making it clear that the mandate they now carry is not just a privilege but a call to serve the people who have entrusted them with their votes.

Toyin Fayinka, Hon. Yinka Esho, among many other notable figures in Lagos politics and governance.

NIMC Pushes Digital Public Infrastructure to Improve Service Delivery, National Security

The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC has issued a stern warning to Nigerians against selling or sharing their personal data, including the National Identification Number, NIN, following recent revelations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

In a statement signed by Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, the Commission expressed deep concern over reports that some individuals, particularly young Nigerians, are allegedly buying and reselling NIN data for financial gain.

The EFCC had earlier disclosed that “this fraud scheme is largely driven by an army of young Nigerians offering a paltry payment of between ₦1,500 and ₦2,000 to victims in exchange for their personal information, which is then sold to some Fintech institutions for up to ₦5,000.”

Describing the trend as a major security threat with far-reaching consequences, NIMC reiterated that it would not be held liable for any misuse of personal data voluntarily shared by individuals or their proxies for monetary inducement.

“The Commission wishes to state clearly that it will not be held responsible for any personal information shared by an individual directly or by proxy for the purpose of financial gain or inducement,” the statement read.

NIMC reminded Nigerians that it has consistently warned against disclosing their NIN or personal data to unauthorized persons or organizations. It also emphasized that all service providers must verify NINs before granting access to any service.

To further enhance data protection, the Commission urged the public to download and use the NINAuth App, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The app offers benefits such as greater control over personal data, enhanced security, and privacy features.

The Commission concluded by calling on Nigerians to take personal data privacy seriously and avoid being complicit in activities that could compromise national security.

An Emeritus Professor from Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo, has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to urgently intervene in the “hostile pension scheme” affecting retired professors, describing the current monthly take-home as unjust and unsustainable.

In an open letter addressed to the governor, Emeritus Professor Martins Agenuma Anetekhai, a former Professor of Fisheries and Aquaculture, lamented the dire financial condition faced by retired academics, including himself, whose pension reportedly stands at a meagre ₦213,678.34, less than $150 per month at current exchange rates.

Professor Anetekhai, who served in the Nigerian university system for over 40 years, warned that the inadequate remuneration risks discouraging dedication to service among current academics nearing retirement.

He described the situation as a national concern that calls for immediate review and reform of the existing pension structure for university professors.

“The current pension scheme is not only unfair but also unsustainable,” he wrote. “It may lead to a lack of dedication to service by those who are yet to retire.”

He urged Governor Sanwo-Olu to use his platform and influence to champion the welfare of retired professors by advocating pension reforms at the national level.

Among the specific appeals, Professor Anetekhai asked the governor to: raise public awareness about the plight of retired professors; engage stakeholders such as the National Assembly and Federal Ministry of Education and support initiatives aimed at improving the dignity and welfare of retired academics.

The professor concluded by noting that his appeal was not personal, but a broader call to protect the integrity and sustainability of Nigeria’s education system.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hon. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, has commended the seamless conduct of the ongoing placement examinations across the state, reaffirming the government’s dedication to strengthening education infrastructure and staffing.

During an inspection tour of several examination centres on Saturday, Alli-Balogun described the exercise—which facilitates the transition of primary school pupils into junior secondary schools—as “well-organized and supervised,” despite a few minor logistical challenges.

“We observed some inadequacies in the distribution of exam materials at a few locations, but we swiftly addressed them,” the Commissioner stated.

According to him, a total of 210,465 candidates are sitting for the placement test across 592 designated centres in Lagos, with each centre accommodating between 40 and 400 pupils, depending on accessibility and location.

Alli-Balogun assured stakeholders that the state has adequate infrastructure to accommodate all successful candidates, including out-of-school children re-entering the formal education system.

Speaking on human resource development, he revealed that the Lagos State Government had replaced 1,005 retiring secondary school teachers and recently approved the recruitment of 1,318 more. He added that plans were also underway to recruit over 1,000 new teachers for the primary school level.

The Commissioner also issued a reminder to parents, stressing their legal obligation to ensure school enrollment for their children.

“Education is not just free in Lagos State, it is also the right of every child. The Child Rights Law clearly mandates school enrollment and prescribes penalties for non-compliance, including fines of up to ₦50,000,” he said.

He urged parents to take full advantage of the free education policy at both primary and secondary levels, reaffirming the government’s commitment to making quality education accessible to all.

Staff of the Lagos State College of Health Technology, LASCOHET have been charged to embrace curiosity, innovation, and the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) as a vital tool in shaping the future of healthcare in Nigeria.

Honourable Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Alex Alake made this call during the institution’s 2025 Management Retreat, held at the Crown City Resort Hall in Agbara, Ogun State.

Alake, who was represented by the Deputy Director of ICT Training and Service Management, Mrs. Gbemisola Kayode-Bolarinwa, delivered a keynote address that emphasized the transformative potential of AI in healthcare delivery.

“Be curious and bold—don’t fear artificial intelligence; befriend it, learn it, and challenge it,” she said, conveying the commissioner’s message.

Alake, in his presentation themed “Preparing the Allied Healthcare Workforce for an AI-Driven Future: Education Strategies for Tomorrow’s Challenges,” described allied health professionals as the backbone of the healthcare system.

He also urged LASCOHET to take the lead in preparing AI-literate professionals through short courses, simulation labs, and strategic partnerships with tech startups.

Also speaking at the event, Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, commended LASCOHET Provost, Professor Raheem Akewushola, for infusing the institution with renewed innovation and progress.

Sule called on staff to actively support the college’s goals, describing unity and collective effort as key drivers of institutional success.

Adding an academic perspective, the Director of the Joint Universities Preliminary Examination Board (JUPEB), Dr. Kolawole Godonu, emphasized curriculum reengineering, simulation-based learning, and industry-academia collaboration.

He stressed that LASCOHET must democratize access to AI knowledge to ensure graduates are equipped to evaluate AI for fairness, accuracy, and inclusiveness.

Dr. Godonu envisioned a future where LASCOHET graduates would integrate AI in critical roles: community health extension workers triaging patients via mobile apps, lab scientists using AI for pathogen detection, and health record officers managing electronic data integrity.

Earlier, LASCOHET Provost, Professor Raheem Akewushola, praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support for education and healthcare. He also lauded the efforts of Commissioner Sule and other stakeholders.

Highlighting recent achievements under his tenure, Akewushola announced the matriculation of 802 students, clearance of academic backlogs, and the establishment of a modern college clinic in collaboration with the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board.

“AI is reshaping how we diagnose, treat, manage, and prevent diseases,” the Provost said. “Our workforce must be adaptive and technology-savvy.”

The two-day retreat, which wraps up on Friday, July 25, brought together key figures, including Permanent Secretary Mr. Adeniran Kasali and former Registrar Mr. Akinwunmi Lewis.

The event served as a strategic platform for aligning stakeholders on the evolving landscape of health education in Lagos State.

Mr Farooq Usman, the Managing Director, Gvest Global, made the pledge at a dinner with investors in Lagos on Friday.

Gvest Global, a subsidiary of Gtext Holdings, is the world’s first and largest digital cooperative society.

Usman stated that the company is growing rapidly and will relaunch its app by August, incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to scale its operations.

He said: “The relaunch of the app aims to provide convenience, confidence, and control for real estate investors.

“Investors can save through target and flexible savings, monitor savings, investments, and use auto debit for savings.

“The target is to increase investors from 2,000 to 220,000 by 2027.”

The Managing Director explained that Gvest allows investments in Naira and Dollars, offering returns of 14 per cent to 26 per cent per annum for Naira investments and 7 per cent to 14 per cent per annum for dollar investments.

“We allow people to invest in Naira and in Dollars. For Naira, you can invest as high as one billion and get returns on investment from 14 per cent to 26 per cent every year.

“If you are dealing in dollars, you can start as low as 10,000USD to as high as one million dollars between seven per cent to 14 per cent per annum,” he said.

Usman emphasised that Gvest is registered with Lagos State Cooperative Federation Limited in Nigeria, and also filed with Securities Exchange Commission in the United States.

The managing director noted that company’s mission is to democratize real estate investment, making wealth creation through property accessible to all.

He urged Nigerians, especially younger ones, to invest in real estate.

According to him, it is the most viable and profitable investment option.

He also advised those dealing in cryptocurrencies and stock markets to consider real estate as a better, safer, and more promising option.

An investor, Mr Olamide Fafure, praised Gvest, stating that real estate is a safer and more promising investment option compared to stocks and cryptocurrencies.

Ogun State Police Command has issued a firm warning to unapproved transport unions and individuals engaging in unauthorized activities within the public transportation sector, declaring that such actions will no longer be tolerated.

The crackdown follows a communiqué issued by the Ogun State Ministry of Transportation, dated July 8, 2025, which clearly outlines the officially recognized unions and organizations permitted to operate and collect revenue in the state’s transport sector.

According to the communiqué, the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) remains the authorized body overseeing operations for buses and taxis. The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) is also permitted to function in collaboration with Ogun Stations Operation Management Services (OSOMS) and the Ogun State Park Management Services (OGSPAM).

For the motorcycle transport sector, the state recognizes the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), as well as the Articulated Motorcycle and Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN), and the Riders and Owners of Motorcycle Organization (ROMO).

In the tricycle category, the approved bodies include the Riders and Owners of Tricycle Organization (ROTO), the Tricycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (TORAN), and the Three Wheelers Operators and Riders Association (TWORA).

The police emphasized that any union, group, or individual operating outside these approved associations is considered illegal, and their actions constitute a threat to public peace and safety. Offenders will face swift enforcement actions including arrest and prosecution.

“Groups seeking legal recognition must go through the proper registration process with the Ogun State Government,” the Command noted.

The statement further reiterated the Command’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the transportation sector, warning that any attempt to breach the peace will be met with the full weight of the law.

LASWA Launches 2025 Waterways Safety Campaign, Distributes Life Jackets Across Lagos

The Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA has officially kicked off its 2025 Waterways Safety Sensitisation Campaign, reinforcing its commitment to safer water transport with the free distribution of life jackets across major jetties and riverine communities.

The annual safety programme, which began this week, targets key jetties including Falomo, Ijede, Sangotedo, Badore, Ito-Omu, Tarzan, and Baiyeku, where LASWA officers are engaging passengers, boat operators, and local residents in live safety demonstrations and awareness sessions.

In line with the agency’s “No Life Jacket, No Boarding” policy, LASWA’s campaign aims to promote a safety-first culture and reduce the risk of accidents on the state’s inland waterways, particularly during the rainy season when tides are higher and visibility is reduced.

Participants received certified branded life jackets, safety souvenirs, informational leaflets, pens, and notebooks, all designed to reinforce awareness and encourage consistent use of safety gear on water.

The sensitisation focused on practical training, including how to properly wear life jackets, respond in emergencies, and follow LASWA’s operational safety procedures for boarding and operating ferries.

Community members and daily water commuters praised the Authority’s outreach efforts, especially in underserved riverine areas.
