The Nigeria Police Force Zone 2 Command (covering Lagos and Ogun states) has held a 5km sensitisation walk to commemorate the 70th anniversary of women in policing and to amplify nationwide advocacy against gender-based violence.
The walk, which started from Onikan and stretched to Falomo, brought together female officers across the zone in a united call to end gender-based violence, rape, child molestation, intimidation, and all forms of abuse.
The event forms part of a series of activities scheduled to run until Monday, December 1, 2025, marking seven decades of courage, service and transformational contributions by women in the Nigeria Police Force.
Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, AIG Adegoke Fayoade, praised the gallantry and professionalism of policewomen, while urging the public to give equal opportunities to all genders.
“We say no to gender-based violence. We want gender mainstreaming; let every gender be given its proper place. Our Policewomen are gallant, supportive, professional, and innovative,” he said.
The celebration also highlights the reforms of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, who has earned commendation for promoting gender inclusion and increasing the number of women rising to senior leadership roles within the Force.
Under his leadership, policewomen are playing stronger roles in operations, strategy, and public engagement.
Speaking after the sensitisation walk, AC X-Squad Zone 2, ACP Edinor Justice, said the exercise was aimed at creating awareness across communities.
“Gender-based violence is a global menace, but it can be overcome. We are creating awareness to individuals, organisations and institutions to come together and say no to violence, no to rape, and no to GBV,” she noted.
Another senior officer, ACP Amina Yakubu, expressed joy at the historic milestone and reaffirmed the collective stance of policewomen.
“Today, women in the Nigeria Police are celebrating 70 years of women policing. We say no to every form of gender-based violence,” she stated.
Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Ayuba Tunni Umma, commended the Inspector-General of Police and the Force Gender Advisor, AIG Aishatu Abubakar Baju, for championing the initiative.
She described the anniversary as a landmark moment for women in the Force.
“This is the first time in our history that women in policing are being celebrated on this scale. It is not easy being a woman, a mother, and building a career in policing, but we are rising. With the present administration, women have been given opportunities to exhibit their full potential,” she said.
CSP Umma added that the 5km walk was also aimed at reinforcing the importance of safeguarding children.
“We want to say no to violence against our children. They are the leaders of tomorrow, and we must not raise them in a culture of abuse.”
The Zone 2 Command reiterated its commitment to sustaining advocacy against gender-based violence while celebrating the resilience and achievements of women who have served in the Nigeria Police Force over the past 70 years.
