The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, MBSE has convened Junior Secondary 3, and Senior Secondary 1 students from all six education districts for the 2025 Career Counselling and Exhibition at the State Education Resource Center, Ojodu‑Ikeja.
The programme was designed to guide students in self-assessment and self-discovery while exposing them to the modern world of work. It offered insights into diverse career options, technological advancements, and decision-making skills, preparing learners for future opportunities.
Held in two sessions, the event featured motivational talks and plenary sessions led by distinguished speakers and mentors from formal and informal sectors, including entrepreneurs, clinical psychologists, creative artists, and professionals with disabilities.
Students were encouraged to look beyond classroom learning, embrace technology-driven opportunities, and align themselves with peers who share similar values.
Director of Child Guidance, School Counselling, and Special Education at the Ministry, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Williams, explained that the workshop aimed to bridge the gap between education and industry needs.
She emphasized that classroom learning alone cannot fully prepare students for the future workforce.
“The era of considering gender in choosing a career is gone. Anyone, whether male or female, can succeed in any legitimate vocation once determined and ready to take the necessary steps,” Mrs. Williams said.
“This is why we brought in young entrepreneurs, male nurses, visually impaired artisans, and other resource persons to share their success stories.”
The workshop was inclusive, accommodating students with special needs and featuring resource persons who are physically challenged. Mrs. Williams noted that the initiative ensures students are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive not only in the future but in the present.
With over 250 participants, the career counselling and exhibition provided students with valuable insights into emerging career paths, technologies, and competencies, empowering them to make informed decisions and chart confident futures.
