CAPPA Executive Director Receives Rotary Outstanding Service to Humanity Award

The Executive Director of Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), Mr. Akinbode Oluwafemi, has been honoured with the Rotary Club of Abuja Metro’s Outstanding Service to Humanity Award in recognition of his contributions to public interest advocacy and community development.

The award was presented during the club’s 17th Investiture Ceremony at the Armed Forces Officers Mess and Suites, Asokoro, Abuja. Rotary said Oluwafemi was unanimously nominated for his leadership, integrity and commitment to humanitarian service and nation-building.

Presenting the award, President of the Rotary Club of Abuja Metro, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, described Oluwafemi as a worthy recipient whose work reflects Rotary’s ideal of “Service Above Self.”

In his response, Oluwafemi expressed appreciation for the recognition, dedicating the award to Nigerians and communities whose resilience continues to inspire CAPPA’s advocacy.

For over three decades, Oluwafemi has championed environmental justice, public health, corporate accountability and democratic governance.

As CAPPA’s founder and executive director, he has led campaigns that contributed to major public health reforms, including Nigeria’s National Tobacco Control Act 2015, the National Tobacco Control Regulations 2019, the Trans Fat and Oils Regulations 2022, and the National Sodium Reduction Guidelines.

His work has also earned international recognition, including the Bloomberg Award for Global Tobacco Control. Beyond advocacy, he is an accomplished journalist, author and documentary producer, with works focusing on climate change, environmental justice and public health.

Congratulating its Executive Director, CAPPA described the award as a fitting recognition of his lifelong commitment to advancing social justice, promoting evidence-based public policies and defending communities against harmful corporate practices.
