EWAN 2023 ANNUAL SUMMIT: NIGERIA MUST PRIORITISE RESEARCH TO BOOST INTERNAL SECURITY- OGUNDIPE, EX UNILAG VC

0

The immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, has identified the place of research in internal security, saying if given the pride of place it deserves, could ensure the safety of investment, protect the welfare of citizens and resources.

Ogundipe stated this on Tuesday in Ikeja, Lagos while delivering the keynote speech at the 2023 Summit of the Education Writers Association of Nigeria, EWAN.
He spoke on the theme, “Research for national development: Nigeria’s internal security in focus”.

“Nigeria has been contending with internal security in various forms since independence. Most of the time, the challenges arise from competition for resources, land water among others. Internal insecurity leads to stunted economic growth, which negatively affects social cohesion and unity. It affects in the negative form, infrastructural development and human capital development won’t be enhanced.

“Foreign relations and diplomacy are badly affected too. Foreign Direct Investment is hampered because insecurity that does not go away keeps foreign investors away. The ways that internal insecurity has hampered our national development are many, but I know that research, science, and innovation can play pivotal roles in enhancing internal security.
“Analysis and intelligence gathering is important. Using drones, and CCTV cameras to monitor situations is necessary. Regarding cyber threats, some universities can be given the assignment to set up centres that would nip cyber crimes and threats in the bud,” he said.

In their goodwill messages, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education Tolani Ali-Balogun, who was represented by the Director Education Resource Centre, Akinlade Omolayo, and the Chairperson, of Nigeria Labour Congress, Lagos State Chapter, Funmilayo Sessi opined that security is a collective responsibility and EWAN is trailing the blaze with proactive discussions and solutions towards securing Nigeria internally.

Earlier, EWAN Chairman, Mr. Mojeed Alabi, said the summit was an avenue for researchers, policymakers, and academia to brainstorm on the way forward with a focus on national development and internal security.

While seeking a lasting role in governance for educational institutions, researchers, and journalists to achieve relatable solutions, Alabi pledged the readiness of EWAN to continually contribute to the development of Nigeria.

The summit had three sessions that looked into specific issues raised.
The first session, moderated by veteran broadcaster, Mrs Bimbo Oloyede, had representatives of the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, and the Nigeria Security Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, on the panel that discussed Ogundipe’s paper.

The second session with the theme, “Financial security and future of banking in Nigeria, what needs from researchers,” was sponsored by UBA Plc.

The third session had the theme “Food security, health safety and environmental sustainability: What nexus? Researchers’ perspectives”, had Prof. Taibat Olaitan Lawanson presenting a paper on urban and regional planning.

Consumers, Vendors, and Farmers in Lagos State can now heave a sigh of relief as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sunday 17th of December, 2023 inaugurated a Middle Level Fresh Food Hub in Idi-Oro, Mushin area of the state with a pledge to replicate the same in Agege, Ajah and Abule-Ado, from next year.

This facility, the first in the state, heralds a turning point in the State’s Food System Transformation Agenda which was adopted as a measure to improve the current system which is inundated by wastage, post-harvest losses, traffic congestion, and other inefficiencies that result in the loss of over 50% of agricultural produce, especially in perishables.

In his keynote address at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that this transformation journey is hinged on the State’s 5-year Agricultural and Food Systems Roadmap (2021-2026) which reflects its passionate commitment to boosting food production, processing, and marketing.

“This particular facility sited here in Mushin Idi-Oro, is on 6,400sq.m of land, with adequate car/truck parking area, and with centralized dry and cold storage systems, giving the market players the economies of scale to make decent profits, the Governor said.

”Finally, I appreciate the people of Mushin for being instrumental in the achievement of this feat. I invite other communities that have been slated for the implementation of this project to come on board, and partner with the Government so that more people across the State can enjoy the benefits of this programme”.

Commissioner for Agriculture, Abisola Olusanya explained that the Middle Level Fresh Food Hub is an attempt by the state government to simplify food distribution and ensure consumers get fresh food items at reasonable prices in a safe and conducive environment.

” This is the right way to go as a Country to ensure that food security is taken care of. Food security is not just about producing, if you do not take care of the market angle, which is what Lagos is to the rest of Nigeria, being the commercial nerve centre, taking care of 60% of commerce, being the fifth largest economy hub in the whole continent”, Olusanya noted.

In his welcome address, Chairman Mushin Local Government Area, Emmanuel Bamigboye commended Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to grassroots projects such as the Fresh Food Hub which will reduce the vulnerability of food shortages, and drive down the prices of farm produce.

Also, a lawmaker representing Mushin Federal Constituency II, Oluwatoyin Fayinka, and the Iyaloja of Mushin, Toyibat Borokini, in their goodwill messages, commended the Sanwo-Olu administration for its efforts in ensuring food security and urged other Local Government Administrators to provide an enabling environment for the replication of such projects in their domains.

GOVERNOR SANWO-OLU PLEDGES 300 UNITS OF PATROL VEHICLES BY 2024……..AS LSSFT BOSS MULLS MULTIFACETED APPROACH TO SECURITY CHALLENGES.

0

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has hinted that the year 2024 will kick off with new security measures, pledging that his administration will be raising the fleet of patrol vehicles for security agencies by 300 units.

Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday, 12th December 2023, made this pledge at the 17th Town Hall Meeting on security organised by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF), where stakeholders in the security sector, citizens and private sector donors met to evaluate issues relating to safety in Lagos between October 2022 and September 2023.

The Governor also hinted that this will be done in collaboration with local government authorities to address critical needs of security.

“To address critical needs, the State Government, in collaboration with local authorities, will provide 300 patrol vehicles through the LSSTF at the beginning of next year. We have repositioned the neighbourhood safety agency to gather actionable intelligence to support security responses,” Sanwo-Olu said.

On his part, the Executive Secretary/ Chief Executive Officer at the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF), DR. Abdurrazaq Balogun advocated approaching security from a multifaceted point of view as modern studies have shown that one approach alone cannot effectively deal with the security challenges that abound.

”Nations are focusing on all seven aspects of human security to ensure sustainable security in their countries. This way, people can achieve their dreams and crime becomes less attractive while the few that still venture into crime can be more efficiently and effectively dealt with”, he stated.

Balogun opined that stakeholders therefore require the combination of several strategies to combat security in Nigeria, particularly
in Lagos State.

”Policymakers and security professionals must possess interdisciplinary
knowledge and skills to understand the interconnected nature of security challenges and develop effective responses. That is why our theme for today’s event is “Security Convergence and Complexities: The Lagos State Imperatives”.

He stated that the complexity of security convergence also demands an increase in capacity-building efforts and expertise within territories.

The LSSFT Boss said: “The Fund received a total of N318.75 million in cash donations and two vehicles in 2023. We continue to thank our donors as their partnership is far-reaching and critical to the success of these security activities.”

Also, LSSTF Board Of Trustees Chairman, Mr. Kehinde Durosinmi-Etti, said although the economic situation in the country had affected donations to the Fund, the Agency surpassed its revenue target by 94 percent.

“The unstable economic climate largely influenced by increasing foreign exchange rates has been a major fundraising challenge. This makes the donation drive even more pertinent for us especially, as there is no alternative to the collective funding model given the indication that the Government cannot do it alone”, Durosinmi-Etti said.

Blacktalker reports that the Fund Core values; Prudence,Accountability, Resourcefulness, and Trust continue to fuel its vision of making “Lagos, the safest and most prosperous commercial location in Africa and its mission of facilitating safety and security in Lagos State”.
