The Vice Chancellor,  Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, was on Thursday, 2nd May 2024, honoured with an Award of Excellence as an Exceptional Leader.


The professor of Physiology was honoured alongside two other female vice chancellors, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, University of Lagos, and Prof. Adenike Oladiji, Federal University of Technology, Akure at the 64th CVL Leader without Title Tribute Colloquium organised by the Centre for Values in Leadership.

According to the Founder of CVL and host of the programme, Prof. Pat Utomi, the LASU vice chancellor was honoured in recognition of her outstanding contributions to tertiary education in Nigeria.

Speaking on the choice of the theme of the Colloquium, “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges: Women Leading the Way in Education”, the professor of Political Economy and Management expert praised Prof. Olatunji-Bello and her fellow honourees for daring to break barriers, shatter glass ceilings, challenge the status quo and make valuable contributions to university administration in Nigeria, a field dominated by men. Prof. Utomi, who spoke virtually further encouraged the awardees  “to continue to set the pace, clear the path for and inspire the upcoming generations”.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello in a recorded video, attributed her feat as the second female vice chancellor of LASU to God and her I-can-do spirit.

She quoted Ephesians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” as her driving force, as well as the personal determination to succeed in the face of obstacles that she possesses.

Chairman of the Colloquium, Secretary to Lagos State Government, Barrister Abimbola Salu Hundeyin, who was represented by Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, congratulated Prof. Olatunji-Bello and her fellow honourees on the feat. She described their awards as well deserved given their values and impact in tertiary education.

The event moderated by Public Speaker and Analyst, Prof. Anthony Kila; had as panelists the Special Adviser to the Kwara State Governor on Education,  Dr. Adetola Salau; Professor Franca Ovadje and Dr. Abiola Salami.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello was represented at the Colloquium by the deputy vice chancellor,  administration,  Prof. Adenike Boyo.

VC expresses excitement over sustained excellent performance

    Students of the Lagos State University International School, LASUIS, have again justified the excellent quality of teaching and learning the school offers as they shone brightly in this year’s Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, United Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, which result was recently released by the body.

    Of the results of 40 students of the School that have been released by the examination body, 40 of them scored 200 marks and above out of 400 marks, which translates to 100 percent pass rate.

    Three (3) of the students also achieved distinctions scoring 300 plus marks, the highest being 341 marks.

    The development was, earlier on Monday, 6th May 2024, shared by the Chairman, LASUIS Board, Prof. Ayodeji Badejo, when she led a delegation of the School on a visit to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, at her office on the 6th floor of Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, main campus, Ojo.

    During the visit, Prof. Badejo presented the School’s Year Book and JAMB results to the Vice Chancellor while appreciating her for giving her total support to the School.

    Prof. Badejo said, “We appreciate you for being so supportive, and that has impacted on the success we are recording. Thank you for always being there, ma.”

    Prof. Olatunji-Bello, in her response, expressed pride at the feats being recorded by the School, especially with regard to the students’ JAMB results. In the words of the VC, “These results are evidence of the quality education you are providing the students. I am happy with the Board and the School management and staff. You are all doing well. Well done.”

    She went on to assure the delegation of the commitment of her administration to the continued support for the School towards greater achievements.

    Other members of the delegation were Prof. Jide Gbenu, a member of the Board, and Mr Taiwo Odumbo, principal of the School.

    NIGERIA FIRST LADY DESCRIBES EDUCATION AS VIABLE TOOL TO NATION DEVELOPMENT

    The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has applauded the drive by the Federal Ministry of Education to get more teachers for government schools in the country.

    A statement signed by her SSA Media, Busola Kukoyi said the First Lady was speaking when the Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, and his management team paid her a visit in her office at the State House Abuja on Friday 3rd May.

    Senator Oluremi Tinubu noted that as a teacher herself, it is important to improve the profession and the practitioners to improve the quality of teaching and learning.

    “I will join you to champion the drive for more teachers in the country. They are very important to the teaching outcomes we get”.

    She commended the Minister for approving the change of name from Second Chance School to Alternative High School for Girls, saying the new name is more dignifying.

    “Education is the way to grow as a nation. We know insecurity is there, discouraging girl child education. But we will not be intimidated from giving this generation what they deserve, quality education”.

    “Governors should be encouraged to adopt the Alternative High School for Girls. Once UBEC builds one in the State, they should build more. These girls should be allowed to fulfill their dreams. How will they fill on their resume, I went to Second Chance School, and people will ask, what did you do?”

    The First Lady also called the attention of the Minister to the need for Adult Literacy Schools in the country and also the re-introduction of Technical Colleges to cover for the children who could not get into Tertiary institutions due to poor academic strength.

    In his remarks, the Minister, Prof Tahir Mamman explained that his Ministry is introducing Skills Acquisition from the primary school level.

    “The issue of out-of-school children is getting our due attention. Only about 25% of our youth get into tertiary institutions. We have to see to the others that are just there. We must get them well trained in their chosen skills”.

    He stated that the Ministry is prioritising those who want to study education in Tertiary Institutions. 

    Prof. Mamman then presented 100 General Scholarships for Female Students and 1000 Bursary Awards for those studying education to the First Lady.

    Those on the visit include the Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Tanko Sununu, DG NEPAD, Princess Gloria Akoundo, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education Mrs Didi Walson-Jack, and other Directors in the Ministry.

    RAINY SEASON: LAWMA COMPLETES REHABILITATION OF OLUSOSUN DUMPSITE

    … Calls For Responsible Waste Disposal

    As the rains approach, the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA has completed the rehabilitation of Olusosun dumpsite, to ensure smooth waste disposal operations across the State.

    Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, who made this known in a statement on Thursday, said the maintenance effort was aimed at improving operational efficiency in anticipation of the rainy season.

    He said, “Our primary objective in rehabilitating Olusosun dumpsite is to ensure that waste disposal trucks can navigate through the dumpsite seamlessly, even in adverse weather conditions, especially during heavy rainfall when logistical challenges tend to arise”.

    Dr. Gbadegesin stated that, in addition to the recently completed maintenance efforts, LAWMA is focused on enhancing operational efficiency to improve turnaround times for waste disposal trucks, adding that the rehabilitation would significantly reduce queue times, translating to faster and more effective waste collection services.

    “Our commitment to environmental sustainability extends beyond operational enhancements. We urge residents to join us in prioritising responsible waste disposal practices to safeguard our environment”, he stressed.

    The LAWMA boss further highlighted the importance of proper waste disposal, urging residents to avoid dumping waste in drains, especially during the rainy season, known for disrupting the drainage system and posing serious environmental risks to lives and properties.

    “We encourage residents to patronise accredited Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators for their waste disposal needs. By supporting licensed operators, individuals contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for all”, he reiterated.

    The Managing Director emphasised the importance of residents familiarising themselves with their PSPs, who play a vital role in waste management at the local level, adding that, by understanding and engaging with their designated PSP operators, residents could ensure efficient and effective waste disposal services in their communities.

    “We are committed to facilitating this process by publishing detailed PSP contacts for all areas in the state. This initiative aims to empower residents to take ownership of waste management practices in their neighbourhoods, ultimately contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment for all”, he assured.

    2024 WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY: NUJ REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO SAFETY OF JOURNALISTS

    The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has joined the global community in commemorating this year’s World Press Freedom Day, reaffirming its commitment to defending press freedom, promoting ethical journalism, and advocating the rights and safety of journalists across the country.

    May 3rd marks World Press Freedom Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the fundamental principles of press freedom, defending the rights of journalists, and promoting the importance of free and independent media in democratic societies. 

    This year’s theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis,” underscores the crucial role of journalists in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainability.

    In Nigeria, journalists play a vital role as watchdogs of society, holding power to account, exposing corruption, and amplifying the voices of the marginalized and vulnerable. Despite facing numerous challenges, including threats, intimidation, and attacks, journalists continue to demonstrate courage, resilience, and professionalism in the pursuit of truth and justice.

    The environmental crisis is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, with far-reaching implications for our planet and future generations. From climate change and deforestation to pollution and biodiversity loss, the threats facing our environment are complex and urgent. Journalism, therefore has a critical role to play in raising awareness, fostering public debate, and catalyzing action to address these issues.

    National President, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Dr Chris Isiguzo MFR,  in a statement to commemorate the Special Day, called on journalists, media organizations, and critical stakeholders to:

    1. Uphold Press Freedom: Defend the rights of journalists to work without fear of censorship, harassment, or violence. Press freedom is essential for democracy, accountability, and the protection of human rights.

    2. Champion Environmental Reporting: Prioritize coverage of environmental issues and their impact on communities, ecosystems, and the planet. Hold governments, corporations, and individuals accountable for their actions and policies that contribute to environmental degradation.

    3. Promote Solutions and Action: Highlight innovative solutions, best practices, and grassroots initiatives aimed at addressing the environmental crisis and promoting sustainability. Inspire public engagement and empower communities to take meaningful action to protect the planet.

    4. Foster Collaboration and Solidarity: Build partnerships and networks to support environmental journalism, share resources and expertise, and amplify the impact of reporting on environmental issues. Collaboration among journalists, civil society organizations, academia, and government agencies is essential for addressing complex environmental challenges.

    5. Support Journalists’ Safety and Well-being: Ensure the safety, security, and well-being of journalists, especially those reporting on sensitive or dangerous topics such as environmental issues. Provide training, resources, and legal support to journalists facing threats or attacks.

    ”On this World Press Freedom Day, let us recommit ourselves to defending press freedom, promoting ethical journalism, and harnessing the power of the media to protect our planet and create a sustainable future for all, Dr. Isiguzo added.”

    CHAIRMAN, LOCAL GOVERNMENT SERVICE COMMISSION RECEIVES MEMBERS OF LAGOS STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE

    The Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government Administration, Chieftaincy and Rural Development led by its Chairman, Hon. Sanni Abdulganiyu Okanlawon has paid a familiarization visit to the Local Government Service Commission, LGSC, Old Secretariat, Ikeja.


    Chairman, Local Government Service Commission, Hon. Kamal Ayinde Bayewu while welcoming members of the Committee, gave a summary of the responsibilities, achievements and progress of the Commission so far, stating that Promotion and Posting are done as at when due.

    Hon. Bayewu mentioned the need for recruitment of Staff in the Unified Local Government system for more effective and efficient service delivery.

    He intimated that officers on level 17 in the Local Government system can now sit for the Permanent Secretary examination so as to be at par with their counterparts in the State.

    Responding, the Chairman, House Committee, Hon. Sanni Abdulganiyu Okanlawon, explained that the rationale behind the visit is to familiarize themselves with the activities of the Commission, know the progress and challenges and also encourage the Commission.

    On sighting the Training School under renovation during the inspection of the offices and premises of the Commission which he said was conducive and pleasing to the eyes, he acknowledged the Chairman of LGSC, Commission Members and the Permanent Secretary for being result oriented and having added value to the Local Government system across board.

    He observed that one of the major challenges of the Local Government system is staff complaint about the proximity of their houses to the Local Governments where they are posted and advised that the Commission look into it.

    The Permanent Secretary, Local Government Service Commission, Mrs Abosede George spoke on extending the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs to the Local Government system.

    Mrs George said the agenda 2030 is for the citizens of the State and the knowledge of SDGs is very important, hence should be cascaded to the grassroots for the development of Lagos State.

    In her own submission the Permanent Secretary, Office of Local Government Establishment and Training, Mrs. Bibilomo Olushekun expantiated on the succession plan which is to recruit people to replace aging members of Staff who are retiring from service for the sake of continuity.

    Hon. Taofeek Adaranijo representing Ikeja division who spoke on behalf of other commission members, appreciated the Chairman and Committee members for their kind words and encouragement.

    Present at the meeting were, Hon. Aina Lawal, Hon. Abolul Kareem, Hon Samuel Alaga, Hon. Abiodun Orekoya, Hon. Ajayi Oladele, Hon. Ege Oluseun, Hon.  Surajudeen Tijani, and Hon. Kehinde Joseph, Directors, Heads of Departments and Units .

    UNILAG, LASU Students Emerge Winners of APWEN Lagos Innovation Challenge

    A student of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Miss Kehinde Adegboye, and her counterpart from the Lagos State University, Epe Campus, Miss Chinaza Goodness Okpala have emerged as winners of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, Lagos Chapter, APWEN Lagos Innovation Month.

    With her innovation project, ‘Capturing of CO2 For Cooling Process,’ Adegboye, a 200-level Mechanical Engineering student of UNILAG captured the attention of judges.

    On her part, Okpala, a 200-level Electronic and Computer Engineering student of the Lagos State University, Epe Campus, had a tie with Adegboye with 35 points for her innovative idea and solution, ‘The Application of Sound As A Clean Source Of Energy’.

    The APWEN Lagos Innovation Month aims to encourage female engineers to break barriers, challenge conventions, and devise solutions for a sustainable future.

    Speaking at the public lecture and mentorship programme in commemoration of the World Creativity and Innovation Day themed, ‘Embracing Sustainability in Engineering Innovations and Best Practices’, Chairwoman of APWEN Lagos, Eng. Atinuke Wuraola Owolabi explained that the day reaffirms the association’s dedication to nurturing creativity and innovation within its organisation and the broader engineering community.

    With societal challenges and opportunities, she stated that creativity and innovation enable progress, noting that the Association has proactively established an Artificial Intelligence club for female engineering students and young engineers, enriching them with technological insights.

    She added that its 200-capacity hall will soon evolve into a hub for resources, technology, and innovation, empowering women and girls in engineering.

    “APWEN Lagos remains steadfast in promoting diversity, inclusivity, and excellence in engineering. We encourage all female engineers to embrace innovation and leave an indelible mark on the world,” Owolabi stated.

    In her remarks, the guest speaker and a former president of the Association, Mrs. Idiat Amusu, expressed concern that Nigeria is behind in innovation and creativity.

    She stated that the country should place more emphasis on the environment, the effect of waste generation and reduction in our system, and how these will affect climate change.

    She described the day as one set aside to encourage the younger generation to think creatively about the effect of innovation and technology on society.

    “We are talking about sustainability. You cannot talk about climate change and its effects without talking about sustainability. Today, innovation and creativity bring to focus what are talking about,” said Amusu. “The focus is for us to step out and innovate, which is what we are trying to innovate into the children.”

    Amusu stressed the need for greater emphasis on the sustainability of renewable energy, particularly through natural resources such as water, wind, and geothermal energy sources.

    “All these are renewable and if we can harness it properly, the cost of the provision of electricity will go down,” Amusu explained.

    Blacktalker reports that Miss Omolola Olarenwaju, a master’s student, emerged third with her ‘ Smart Cook Stove’ innovation idea and solution project. 

    Awards were also presented to talented Nigerian children who distinguished themselves in the FAEO-WIE Art Competition 2023, designed to demonstrate their creativity and passion for engineering.

    Founder, Caleb University Lauds Governor Sanwo-Olu, Senator Abiru on reconstruction of Ikorodu-Itoikin Road

    The Proprietor/CEO of Caleb Group of Schools, who is also the Founder and Visitor to Caleb University, Imota, Lagos, Dr. Oladega Adebogun, has praised the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Tokunbo Abiru, for their active involvement in the reconstruction of Ikorodu-Itoikin Road.

    The 34-kilometre road was initially constructed in 1975 during the regime of General Yakubu Gowon, as the Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and Brigadier General Mobolaji Olufunso Johnson, as the pioneer Military Governor of Lagos State.

    In a statement by his spokesman, Dr Elvis Otobo, Adebogun said the effort was a testament to the progress of our democracy. 

    “The Ikorodu-Itoikin Road was a nightmare for travellers, motorists, and residents until President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government intervened and approved its reconstruction through the Federal Ministry of Works, ” he said. 

    He remarked that the reconstruction of the road, a significant infrastructural development, has not only improved the travelling experience on the corridor, but also brought joy and happiness to the people, institutions, companies, and communities that use it daily.

    Dr. Adebogun, who is widely travelled, commended the dualisation of the road to enhance its capability and the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi’s assurances on the design for the dualisation of the road.

    The Harvard scholar and astute educationist also appreciated President Tinubu’s efforts in massively building and rehabilitating roads across the country. 

    He specifically mentioned the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, Phase 1, Section 1; the Ahmadu Bello Way to Eleko Village Area in Lekki Peninsula, the 260 roads for emergency repairs, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Road and the Second Niger Bridge Bypasses among others.

    The erudite entrepreneur pointed out the significance of the Ikorodu-Itokin Road as a crucial access point from other parts of the country and a strategic route to the new Lekki-Ibeju corridor, which houses the Dangote Refinery, Lagos deep seaport, and the free trade zone.
