Environmental stakeholders and young climate advocates at the 2025 Conference of Youth on Environment and Climate, COYEC’25 have issued a strong call to action, urging the adoption of grassroots-driven solutions and active policy engagement to address the growing crisis of plastic pollution across Africa.

Among the key recommendations from the hybrid event were the promotion of traditional materials as sustainable alternatives to plastic, the localization of climate solutions, increased youth literacy on environmental policies, and stronger collaboration between government, the private sector, and youth-led groups.

Participants also emphasized the need to simplify “climate jargon” for grassroots communities and to ensure youth play central roles in both environmental decision-making and implementation.

Themed “Unlocking a Plastic-Free Future Through Innovation and Action,” COYEC’25 brought together a cross-section of over 500 participants, including youth leaders, climate innovators, policymakers, academics, civil society groups, and private sector stakeholders to foster dialogue and empower youth to lead Africa’s environmental response.

Speakers and panelists shared insights across multiple sessions, spotlighting practical solutions and the importance of intentional climate action.

Product Manager at Wastebanc, Mr. Kekeyawo Quyum encouraged young people to begin with simple steps such as connecting with waste scavengers or joining recycling groups. “Ideation is simple,” he said. “But implementation is the real work.”

General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi described plastic pollution as a “time bomb,” citing the high volume of plastic bottle waste in areas like Surulere, Lagos, as examples of untapped recycling opportunities.

He also warned of microplastics being detected in human bodies, stressing the urgent need for civic engagement and accountability. “Don’t be discouraged by inaction,” he urged. “Approach government; don’t shut them out.”

In a panel on ‘Unlocking Inclusive Plastic Solutions through Indigenous Knowledge and Modern Technology’, discussants, Dr. Temitope Shogbamu emphasized placing indigenous youth at the center of environmental decisions, while Solomon Okonkwo called for better communication of climate issues to communities through relatable and simplified language.

On her part, Ruth Olowosile underscored the importance of community-specific solutions and challenged youth to act with urgency and intentionality.

Participants at COYEC’25 commended the conference for its engaging dialogue and practical insights, describing it as a turning point in their environmental advocacy journeys. Many attendees said the sessions reignited their sense of responsibility and commitment to climate action, especially at the community level.

Aminu Nuhu, one of the participants, noted that the event underscored the transformative power of youth-led innovation, especially when supported with the right tools and collaboration. Nouran Farouk echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of cross-border partnerships in driving inclusive and urgent climate solutions.

For Irekpita Eshofune Faith, the conference highlighted the economic potential of environmental action, particularly in turning waste into employment opportunities. She praised the speakers for stressing the importance of starting small while maintaining a long-term vision.

Similarly, George Obiero Wachara reflected on Africa’s vulnerability to climate change, stating that sustainable living practices aligned with nature could pave the way for a resilient and inclusive future.

As a hybrid event, COYEC’25 featured representation from all 36 states in Nigeria and maintained an active post-event online community. The official COYEC WhatsApp group now hosts nearly 500 members, serving as a space for continued collaboration and exchange of ideas among youth climate actors.

COYEC’25 organizers say the momentum from the event will drive long-term community-based environmental initiatives, positioning Africa’s youth as pivotal actors in building a plastic-free and sustainable continent.
