LASWA Hints CNG-Powered Boats, Electric Ferries as Lagos Moves Towards Cleaner Marine Energy

The Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA has emphasized the strategic importance of introducing Compressed Natural Gas, CNG-powered boats and electric ferries as part its long-term commitment to reducing carbon emissions, enhancing passenger safety, and lowering operational costs for operators.

Speaking during a strategic engagement meeting held at LASWA’s headquarters in Ikoyi, the General Manager of LASWA, Mr. Damilola Emmanuel stated that the waterways are central to Lagos’ future mobility plans and energy transition remains a core pillar in actualizing this vision.

The meeting was convened by LASWA and brought together the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), representatives of RIL Hydro Kraft Limited (promoters of CNG for marine), key boat operators, and marine stakeholders across Lagos State.

Emmanuel noted that the session aimed to align national clean energy goals with the realities and operations of local boat operators, explore the feasibility of marine CNG adoption, and foster collaboration among stakeholders in driving an efficient energy transition in water transportation.

The team from the Presidential Initiative on CNG, led by the PD/CEO, Engr. Micheal Oluwagbemi, provided insight into the federal government’s roadmap for accelerating CNG adoption across multiple transport sectors, including maritime.

He shared the success stories from the road transport CNG adoption across the country and assured stakeholders of strong technical support and enabling policies towards the adoption of CNG for marine.

The CEO of RIL Hydro Krafts Limited, Mr. Layi Solesi, delivered a technical presentation on the conversion process, fueling infrastructure, safety standards, and the long-term economic benefits of CNG usage in marine transport. He also showcased successful case studies from other coastal cities and expressed readiness to work closely with LASWA and the boat operators on pilot schemes.

Boat operators present raised critical questions and shared concerns regarding affordability, safety, engine compatibility, fueling infrastructure, and maintenance.

In response, both LASWA and the federal team assured them of gradual, inclusive implementation backed by capacity-building programs and stakeholder involvement at every stage.

Gtext Homes Restates Commitment to Bridge Deficit, Launches Housing Scheme

A real estate firm, Gtext Homes, a subsidiary of Gtext Holdings, has launched a housing scheme at the Sardius Estate in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, to reduce the deficit and provide affordable homes for Nigerians.

The firm’s Managing Director, Mr Farouq Usman, made this known during the launch and allocation of the Sardius Estate to landowners in Ogun State on Saturday.

Recall that the Federal Government had announced that 30 million housing units are needed to bridge the housing deficit in the country.

Usman said that with the launch of the Sardius Estate in Ijebu Ode, the company was bringing the real estate dreams, desires, and expectations of many into reality.

He revealed that plans were underway to sell affordable lands with good payment plans to assist in bridging the housing deficit in the country.

The Managing Director said the estate was planned to feature fully equipped green and smart homes that would not only be off the national grid but would be powered only by renewable energy.

Usman said the goal of the firm was to give their clients a very good payment plan so they could buy the homes.

He, however, said that if they had government initiatives that could help them get at least between N50 million to N70 million to buy a house, the firm could help them build.

The Managing Director said the firm does what it calls “off-plan sales,” which means clients could pay on an installment basis, saying that the firm builds for them, but buying off the land was not that expensive.

Speaking on the affordability of the homes, Usman said, “We as developers buy based on market forces and sell based on market forces.

There is a cost of buying the land likewise the cost of building it. But to make it affordable, it has to be from the government.

“I have often said that affordability has nothing to do with private developers but everything to do with the government and the policies of the government.

“There is a need to start policies that we call first-time buyers’ policies, such that the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Government can guarantee that anybody who can develop 5 per cent or 10 per cent on their first housing unit.

“The government would bring in 20 per cent and then the lenders can bring in the remaining 70 per cent. Such policies will help reduce the housing deficit,” he said.

On her part, the General Manager of Gtext Land, Olabisi Umaru, said the firm was bridging the country’s housing deficit with the launch of the Sardius Estate.

Umaru said buying into the said property at a price as cheap as it was, gave an opportunity to start building residential houses.

The General Manager noted that this was to meet up with the community’s needs.

She said that when they start building the housing units, it would be very affordable, unlike some places, especially in Lagos, where the prices for residential houses are high

According to her, the estate is quite affordable, and it will be open for a lot of residential investments, which could also help in addressing the housing deficit.

Umaru said the esttate was good for investment,while assuring investors that they would get returns on investment.

She disclosed that the company had over 400 plots of land, with lots of incentives including luxury service plots, technology and innovations for the comfort of their clients.

CAPPA Urges Government to Peg SSB Tax at ₦130 per Litre, Earmark Funds for Healthcare

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa, CAPPA has called on the Federal Government to increase the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages, SSBs tax from ₦10 to at least ₦130 per litre, in line with global best practices and World Health Organisation, WHO’s recommendations.

The call was made during a media roundtable on SSB tax in Abuja by CAPPA’s Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi, who urged authorities to prioritise public health by adjusting the current tax regime to reflect a 20–50 percent increase in the retail price of sugary drinks.

According to Oluwafemi, “A stronger and better-structured SSB tax has the potential to generate over ₦200 billion each year,” noting that such funds could be earmarked to support the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, the National Health Insurance Authority, and school feeding programmes.

He said the current ₦10 per litre tax is too minimal to influence consumer behaviour, accounting for only 1 percent of the average retail price of sugary drinks, and reiterated that a robust tax structure could help curb the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

CAPPA also demanded that revenue from the SSB tax be earmarked for healthcare services, nutrition education, and NCD prevention, particularly in underserved communities.

Other recommendations included mandatory front-of-pack labelling on all food and beverage products, annual public reporting by revenue and health agencies, and stricter safeguards against industry interference.

The organisation urged the government to invest in food security and agroecology as long-term solutions to Nigeria’s dietary health crisis, stressing that reducing sugar-laden drink consumption could ease pressure on the health system while improving national health outcomes.

Oluwafemi further called out misinformation campaigns by industry players, particularly attempts to label the SSB tax as a “sugar tax,” and rejected claims that increased taxation would harm the economy or cause job losses.

He cited examples from countries like South Africa, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, where similar taxes led to reduced consumption without negatively impacting jobs or economic growth.

Reaffirming that the health burden from sugary drinks is now a national crisis, Oluwafemi stated, “A stronger SSB tax will save lives, ease the pressure on our fragile health system, and generate much-needed revenue to build a healthier, more prosperous nation.”

LGSC Extends Date for CBT in Ongoing Recruitment Exercise

The Lagos State Local Government Service Commission, LGSC has announced an extension of the Computer-Based Test, CBT for its ongoing recruitment exercise into Local Government Councils and Local Council Development Areas.

Originally scheduled for Monday, 7th July 2025, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., the test will now take place over five days, from Monday, 7th July to Friday, 11th July 2025.

According to the Commission, the decision was made in response to congestion and traffic challenges faced by applicants and the extension is intended to improve accessibility and ensure a more convenient testing experience for all participants.

Applicants are expected to log in via the LGSC website using their unique credentials, as provided during registration. The Commission has also advised candidates to ensure a stable internet connection and avoid refreshing or closing their browsers while the test is in progress, as doing so may terminate their session.

All candidates are encouraged to take the test in a quiet and secure environment using only recommended web browsers for optimal performance.

The LGSC expressed appreciation for the patience and cooperation of all applicants.

The Lagos State Government has restated its unwavering commitment to promoting sustainable agricultural heritage while leveraging agritourism as a dynamic link between agriculture and the tourism, arts, and culture sectors.

This assurance was given by the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, at the Xtralarge World Agritourism Expo Festival 2025, held on Thursday at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Ikeja, Lagos

The Commissioner, who was represented by the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board, Mrs. Bukola Agbaminoja noted that Lagos, celebrated as the economic heartbeat of Nigeria, is not just a bustling metropolis but also a land with rich agricultural potential.

Benson-Awoyinka stressed that the State’s diverse landscapes, from its coastal regions to its fertile hinterland, offer a unique canvas for developing agritourism.

The Commissioner emphasised that agritourism plays a vital role in enriching the State’s tourism offerings, creating fresh experiences for tourists who seek more than traditional leisure attractions.

She assured stakeholders that the Ministry will continue to foster a thriving agritourism ecosystem, one that supports local farmers and creatives, promotes cultural preservation, and boosts the State’s tourism economy.

“With agritourism, we are weaving together our agricultural heritage and our rich artistic and cultural identity to tell a compelling Lagos story, one that celebrates who we are and opens new pathways for sustainable growth,” she added.

Speaking on the vision behind the initiative, the Convener and Chairman of Xtralarge Farms & Resorts, Dr. Seyi Davids described the World Agritourism Festival as a transformative platform designed to unlock the full potential of agritourism for Nigeria and beyond.

Governor Soludo Calls for Preservation of Igbo Culture at Iwaji Festival

The Anambra State Government is deeply saddened by the recent killing of innocent lives at Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area.

The government strongly condemns this dastardly act in the strongest possible terms and extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.

The newly inaugurated Chairperson, Jumoke Faleye Johnson, is a seasoned journalist with over two decades of experience. She has held various leadership positions, including Vice Chairperson and Chairperson of the NUJ, Voice of Nigeria Chapel, Lagos.

Johnson is known for her dedication, hard work, and commitment to the advancement of women in journalism.

The Secretary, Anu M. Thomas, brings valuable experience to the table, having worked with the media team of the Lagos State Government for several years. Her expertise is expected to enhance the association’s communication and outreach efforts.

Ogun Police Arrest Cultist in Igbesa, Launch Manhunt for Accomplices

The Ogun State Police Command has issued a strong advisory warning the public, particularly youths, about intelligence reports indicating planned cult-related activities associated with the annual 7-7 anniversary across the state.

In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Omolola Odutola, the Command noted that it has heightened security across all divisions and area commands in anticipation of any unlawful gatherings.

“Any attempt to stage cult-related gatherings, processions, or anniversary events will be met with swift and decisive police action,” the statement read.

The Statement urged parents and guardians to caution their children and wards, while young people are advised to avoid loitering or gathering in groups in public spaces.

It noted that security operatives have been directed to disperse any suspicious assemblies to prevent a breach of peace.

The police also warned that anyone found in possession of firearms will face prosecution.

The 7-7 date which is July 7 is often linked to cult-related commemorations in some parts of Nigeria, typically marked by violence and unrest.

The Ogun State Police reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring public safety and order during this period.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies to maintain peace,” CSP Odutola added.
