The University of Lagos, UNILAG has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on sexual harassment, distancing itself from a controversial publication that sparked public outrage on social media and stressing that victim-blaming has no place in the institution.
In a statement issued by the University’s management, UNILAG said it was aware of the widespread reactions following the circulation of an image containing a publication on sexual harassment.
The university acknowledged that the publication was originally produced by its Student Affairs Division but said it had been withdrawn because its content does not reflect the institution’s values, position or standards.
UNILAG stated that it does not tolerate rape or sexual harassment in any form and rejected any suggestion that victims should be held responsible for acts of harassment.
“The University of Lagos wishes to state unequivocally, and for the record, that we do not tolerate rape or sexual harassment in any form, nor do we validate, engage in, or support victim-blaming or shaming,” the statement read.
The institution described sexual harassment as a serious misconduct that has no place within its community and warned against trivialising such offences.
It also noted that sexual harassment is not gender-specific and can affect anyone, urging students who have experienced or witnessed any form of harassment to make use of the university’s official confidential reporting channels for prompt investigation and support.
Reaffirming its commitment to students and staff, the university said it remains dedicated to providing a safe, respectful, equitable and inclusive environment where members of the academic community can learn, work and thrive.
