The University of Lagos, UNILAG Transport and Traffic Committee has released detailed traffic movement arrangements ahead of the 56th Convocation Ceremonies scheduled to hold from January 20 to 22, 2026.
In a traffic advisory issued to motorists and members of the public, the committee outlined diversion routes and access restrictions aimed at easing congestion around the university and adjoining communities during the three-day event.
According to the advisory, motorists travelling from the Bariga–Somolu axis toward Yaba, Onike and Herbert Macaulay Way will encounter a barricade at Kpako Junction, where traffic will be diverted to Fola-Agoro Road.
Alternatively, motorists may proceed from Chemist Bus Stop through Shobande Street to Sholanke Street, then down Adenuga Kajero Street, which links Bajulaye Road. From there, motorists can connect to Morocco, WAEC, Jibowu and other adjoining areas.
The committee explained that campus shuttle services will terminate at Kpako Bus Stop, where designated buses have been provided to convey visitors to the university gate. From the gate, another set of shuttle buses will transport guests to the Senate area, where the convocation ceremonies will take place.
For motorists accessing Yaba Tech or Abule-Oja via Fola-Agoro Road, the advisory stated that vehicles should proceed from Bajulaye Road to Fola-Agoro, drive straight to Abule-Ijesha after the canal, and then link Eletu-Odibo Street. Turning right leads to Yaba College of Technology, while moving straight connects to Abule-Oja.
Motorists travelling from Yaba, Onike and Herbert Macaulay Way toward Bariga have been advised to pass through Yaba Tech or, upon reaching Lawani Junction, follow Davis Street to link Eletu-Odibo Street, then proceed to Fola-Agoro and Bajulaye.
The committee also appealed to vehicle owners along Abule-Oja Road to keep their cars at home during the convocation period due to the anticipated high volume of traffic around the university.
Similarly, members of the general public have been advised to avoid roads linking the University of Lagos with Bariga, Yaba and Somolu, including University Road from Herbert Macaulay Way through St. Finbarrs Road to Kpako.
Motorists entering the campus have been urged to obey traffic committee officials who will direct them to designated car parks. University staff have also been advised to limit the use of private vehicles. Those with essential duties on campus are instructed not to drive beyond the Centre for Information Technology and Systems, CITS, as parking spaces have been designated for staff vehicles at Kosoko Drive.
To manage parking, the university has introduced a colour-coded car park system categorised into Parks A, B, C and D, with corresponding stickers issued to vehicles. Park A is reserved for VVIPs and VIPs near the convocation venue, while Parks B, C and D are designated for other categories of guests across various faculties and facilities. Motorists are required to paste the issued stickers visibly on their windscreens to enable smooth traffic control and reduce delays.
The committee also said barricades within the campus will be reduced this year to ease movement, while over forty trained undergraduate and postgraduate volunteers, alongside traffic marshals, will be deployed to manage parking areas and guide motorists.
Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and other enforcement bodies, will be fully deployed throughout the three-day convocation period to maintain order and ensure compliance with traffic directives. A towing vehicle has also been made available to promptly remove broken-down or improperly parked vehicles.
The university emphasised that the traffic measures are temporary and necessary to ensure a smooth, safe and hitch-free convocation ceremony.
