Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has assured Nigerians of sustained improvements in electricity supply, saying the Federal Government has commenced the implementation of a structured reform agenda aimed at delivering reliable and affordable power across the country.
Tegbe, who expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him through his appointment, said the Ministry of Power and key sector agencies have already begun executing a comprehensive strategy focused on accountability, measurable milestones, and disciplined implementation.
According to the minister, extensive consultations have been held with critical stakeholders in the power sector, including the Federal Ministry of Power, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET), and FGN Power Company.
He noted that international development organisations and funding partners have also expressed readiness to provide liquidity support to the sector, describing the development as a strong vote of confidence in the government’s reform agenda.
Highlighting some of the early achievements recorded under the new administration, Tegbe disclosed that the 450-megawatt Alaoji Open Cycle Power Plant in Abia State, which had remained inactive for three years, has been revived by the NDPHC, with up to 375 megawatts now available for transmission to the national grid.
He further revealed that the TCN recently energised new transmission assets at Katampe in Abuja, as well as substations in Ayede and Abeokuta, strengthening grid infrastructure and improving power delivery across multiple regions.
The minister also cited the swift restoration of electricity in parts of Abuja following the unexpected failure of a 100MVA transformer, noting that TCN and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) engineers worked through the night to restore supply within 24 hours.
Tegbe pointed to recent regulatory actions by NERC directing electricity distribution companies to compensate Band A customers for supply shortfalls recorded earlier in the year as evidence of the government’s commitment to consumer protection and accountability in the sector.
“These developments did not happen by accident. They are the result of renewed commitment, coordination and determination by all stakeholders in the power sector,” he said.
The minister commended the management and staff of the Ministry of Power and its agencies for their professionalism, dedication and cooperation since his assumption of office. He also praised private sector operators for their willingness to support ongoing reforms.
He assured stakeholders that excellence and productivity would continue to be recognised and rewarded under his leadership.
Addressing Nigerians, Tegbe appealed for patience and understanding, noting that many of the challenges facing the power sector have accumulated over several decades and cannot be resolved overnight.
“I will not promise what I cannot deliver, but I promise visible improvement, and I will continue to communicate honestly with Nigerians every step of the way. You will see the progress as it happens,” he stated.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s long-term objective, the minister said the ultimate goal remains the provision of reliable and affordable electricity to homes, businesses and industries across the country.
He expressed confidence that the sector is now on the right path under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and pledged to sustain the momentum of reforms.
“The destination is clear, reliable and affordable electricity for every Nigerian home, business and industry around the clock. The journey may be long, but we are firmly headed in the right direction. We will keep moving. We will keep delivering. And the improvements will keep coming,” he said.
