Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has commended the management and staff of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, Niger Delta Power Holding Company, NDPHC, and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company for recent achievements aimed at strengthening electricity supply and improving power infrastructure across the country.
In a statement made available to journalists, the minister praised TCN for the successful energisation of a new 300MVA transformer at the Katampe Transmission Substation in Abuja, describing it as a major development that would significantly boost transmission capacity within the Federal Capital Territory.
Tegbe also lauded the swift collaboration between TCN and AEDC in responding to the sudden failure of a 100MVA transformer in Abuja last Friday, an incident that disrupted electricity supply to several parts of the nation’s capital.
According to the minister, both organisations demonstrated professionalism and efficiency by mobilising technical personnel and resources immediately, working round the clock to restore power supply within 24 hours.
He described the rapid response as a commendable example of inter-agency cooperation and proactive service delivery in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to improving electricity supply nationwide.
The minister further commended NDPHC under the leadership of its Managing Director, Jennifer Adighije, for successfully reviving the 450-megawatt Alaoji Open Cycle Power Plant in Abia State.
The facility, developed under the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP), had remained inactive for three years. Its restoration, according to Tegbe, represents a significant milestone for the power sector and is expected to strengthen electricity supply across the South-East and improve overall grid stability.
He noted that the plant is now capable of dispatching up to 375 megawatts of electricity to the national grid, providing additional generation capacity to support growing energy demand.
The minister assured workers and agencies across the power sector that excellence, productivity and innovation would continue to receive recognition under his administration.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improving electricity infrastructure and expanding access to reliable power, while urging stakeholders across the sector to remain focused on delivering sustainable solutions for Nigerian homes, businesses and industries.
Tegbe stressed that sustained collaboration, innovation and dedication among operators in the electricity value chain remain critical to achieving the government’s objectives of enhanced power generation, transmission and distribution across the country.
