Lagos State University, LASU has emerged as the only tertiary institution in Southwest Nigeria selected by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund to host a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Cyber Sciences, ARCS, with an approved intervention fund of N3 billion.
The approval, granted under TETFund’s 2026 Special Intervention Projects allocation, is expected to strengthen research, innovation and capacity development in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cyber Security, Robotics, Coding and other emerging digital technologies.
According to the university, LASU secured the prestigious recognition after a rigorous national evaluation process in which it distinguished itself through its institutional capacity, existing infrastructure and proven track record in digital technology advancement.
The development further reinforces the university’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading technology-driven institutions and the most digitally advanced state university in the country.
University authorities noted that years of sustained investment in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure, digitised academic and administrative processes, and a deliberate commitment to technology-focused education contributed significantly to the institution’s selection.
Reacting to the approval, the management of LASU, led by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, described the intervention as both a recognition of the university’s achievements and a responsibility to further advance technological innovation and digital education.
The university stated that the Centre of Excellence would consolidate LASU’s leadership in technology education while equipping students and young Nigerians with the digital skills required to compete in the global knowledge economy.
According to the institution, the initiative aligns with TETFund’s broader objective of strengthening Nigeria’s technological capabilities, addressing the digital skills gap and preparing future generations for opportunities in an increasingly technology-driven world.
LASU expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and TETFund for the investment, assuring stakeholders that the university would maximise the centre’s impact for the benefit of students, staff and the wider Nigerian society.
The Vice-Chancellor also congratulated members of the university community on what she described as a landmark achievement for the institution.
The proposed Centre of Excellence is expected to serve as a hub for advanced research, innovation and training in emerging technologies, further positioning LASU as a key contributor to Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.
