Police Threaten Arrest, Prosecution Over Destruction of Campaign Posters Ahead 2027 Elections

The Nigeria Police Force has warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against destroying campaign posters, banners and billboards belonging to opponents ahead of the 2027 general elections, threatening arrest and prosecution of offenders.

The Force said it had observed increasing incidents of deliberate defacement, tearing and destruction of political campaign materials across the country, describing the acts as political intolerance and criminal conduct.

In a statement, the police said the destruction or unlawful removal of another candidate’s campaign materials could constitute malicious damage or mischief under applicable criminal laws, including Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law.

The police stressed that political affiliation or loyalty to a party did not give individuals the right to destroy another candidate’s property or restrict their right to campaign.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed Commissioners of Police in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take preventive measures, investigate reported incidents and ensure that suspects are arrested and prosecuted.

The Force also warned political sponsors and individuals who recruit, encourage or facilitate the destruction of campaign materials that they would be held accountable where evidence establishes their involvement.

It said all political parties and candidates were entitled to equal protection under the law, regardless of their political affiliation or status.

The police urged political parties, candidates and supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully and respect the rights of others, warning that political intimidation and criminal acts would not be tolerated.

The Force said it would take action against individuals involved in acts capable of undermining the democratic process or turning the political environment into a theatre of lawlessness.
