The Lagos State Informal Space Management Authority, LASISMA and the Agege Local Government have agreed to strengthen collaboration to improve the management of informal urban spaces, protect public infrastructure and enforce physical planning regulations within the council area.
The partnership was sealed during a courtesy visit by the General Manager of LASISMA, TPL Daisi Oso, and the agency’s management team to the Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, Hon. AbdulGaniyu Vinod Obasa, at the council secretariat.
The engagement focused on enhancing cooperation in regulating Informal Urban Spaces (IUS) and Incidental Open Spaces (IOS), preventing encroachment on public infrastructure and promoting orderly urban development across Agege.
Speaking during the visit, Oso said the meeting provided an opportunity to acquaint the council with LASISMA’s statutory mandate and the Setbacks, Common Areas, Roadsides Administration, Monitoring Project (SCRAMP), which oversees the regulation and management of informal urban and incidental open spaces across Lagos State.
He explained that the agency’s mandate is to promote physical orderliness, environmental aesthetics, public safety and revenue optimisation for both the state and local governments.
According to him, the visit also enabled LASISMA to formally introduce its operational framework as provided under the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Physical Development Law, 2019 (as amended), while identifying areas of collaboration with the council.
Oso stressed that stronger collaboration with local governments is essential to protecting public setbacks, preventing encroachment on public infrastructure rights-of-way and ensuring compliance with physical planning regulations.
He noted that such partnerships would contribute to a more organised urban environment and support sustainable management of informal spaces across Lagos State.
Responding, Obasa welcomed the initiative and pledged the council’s support for LASISMA’s efforts to promote environmental orderliness and proper management of public spaces in line with existing laws.
He also assured the agency of the council’s cooperation in stakeholder engagement, public sensitisation and other initiatives aimed at improving compliance with physical planning regulations and fostering a cleaner, safer and more organised Agege.
The visit concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to advancing the Lagos State Government’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda through improved urban planning and sustainable development.
As part of the engagement, Oso presented a commemorative gift to the council chairman as a symbol of the partnership, while Obasa led the LASISMA delegation on an inspection of an ongoing project to secure and improve the high-tension power corridor along Akilo Road to address safety concerns and enhance the use of the public space.
