In a heartwarming tribute to women in service, the Comptroller-General of Customs, CGC, Adewale Adeniyi, marked the 2026 International Women’s Day with a surprise appreciation event for female officers of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS.
Held at the Customs House in Maitama, the event drew officers across ranks and members of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), each receiving a rose in recognition of their resilience, dedication, and significant contributions to national development.
Addressing the gathering, CGC Adeniyi explained that the event was intentionally designed to break away from routine ceremonies and place the spotlight on women whose efforts often go unrecognised.
“I know you did not come here expecting this. That is exactly the point. Too often, recognition comes only when it is convenient or when it fits neatly into a calendar. Today, we chose to do something different,” he said.
Acknowledging the Service’s paramilitary structure, Adeniyi said, “This is a paramilitary organisation, and we are guided by tradition and protocol. But today, we are united by a common purpose, which is to celebrate the women of the Nigeria Customs Service.”
He described female officers as indispensable to the operations of the Service, commending their professionalism and dedication across various formations. “You are central to what we do. I want to appreciate all of you serving in different capacities across the country for your resilience and commitment to duty,” he added.
Kikelomo Adeniyi, National President of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association and wife of the Comptroller-General, lauded the initiative as a significant recognition of women’s roles in the Customs community.
“This is indeed a special occasion for us to recognise the resilience, dedication and hard work of women who continue to support the Service both directly and indirectly,” she said.
She further commended CGC Adeniyi’s leadership for creating opportunities for growth and inclusion within the Service, noting that female officers are not just supporting actors but active contributors to the Service’s ongoing reforms and progress.
“Our women are essential to building stronger institutions and communities. Through various initiatives, we have continued to empower women and families, aligning with the broader reform agenda of the Nigeria Customs Service,” she added.
The surprise appreciation event underscored the Service’s commitment to valuing hard work and dedication, irrespective of gender, and highlighted the integral role of women in advancing the mission of the Nigeria Customs Service.
