Blue Lagos has commenced monitoring the Independent National Electoral Commission’s, INEC Continuous Voter Registration, CVR exercise in hard-to-reach riverine communities across Lagos State, as part of efforts to improve electoral inclusion and participation.
The initiative focused on ensuring that residents of remote coastal communities are not excluded from the voter registration process because of transportation and accessibility challenges.
During the exercise, the Blue Lagos team visited the Etegbin Registration Centre in Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ojo Local Government Area, where INEC officials were registering eligible voters.
The team also carried out community mobilisation in the riverine communities of Esofin and Egan to encourage residents to participate in the exercise.
To overcome geographical barriers, Blue Lagos coordinated the transportation of prospective registrants from the remote communities to the registration centre using local boats, enabling eligible residents to access INEC’s registration services with ease.
The organisation said the intervention underscores its commitment to promoting inclusive democratic participation by ensuring that residents of Lagos’ riverine and coastal communities have equal opportunities to register and participate in future elections.
