Blue Lagos Begins Solar-Powered Borehole Project in Epe Riverine Community

Blue Lagos Sustainability Initiative has commenced the construction of a solar-powered borehole in Yegunda Riverine Community, Epe Local Government Area, as part of efforts to improve access to safe drinking water in hard-to-reach riverine and coastal communities across Lagos.

The intervention followed a recent call by the organisation for nominations of communities in urgent need of potable water infrastructure, which attracted requests from 10 riverine and coastal communities across the state.

Following a review of the requests, Blue Lagos commenced a verification exercise on Monday, August 17, 2026, beginning with Yegunda Community.

The exercise also builds on the organisation’s recently concluded Enumeration and Baseline Survey of 134 hard-to-reach riverine and coastal communities across Lagos State, which provided data to guide targeted development interventions.

During the assessment, the Blue Lagos team observed the difficulties residents face in accessing clean water, with community members relying on unsafe and inadequate sources.

Based on the findings, the organisation approved the immediate construction of a solar-powered borehole to provide a sustainable source of potable water for residents.

Speaking during the visit, Team Lead of Blue Lagos Sustainability Initiative, Mr. Adesanya Saheed Olayinka, said the organisation was committed to ensuring that no community was left behind in the pursuit of sustainable development and improved living conditions.

“The situation we encountered in Yegunda was deeply concerning. Access to clean water is a fundamental human need and should not be a privilege. After witnessing the condition of the existing water source, we resolved to immediately commence the construction of a solar-powered borehole that will serve the community for many years,” he said.

Adesanya appreciated the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, who serves as Patron of Blue Lagos Sustainability Initiative, for his support for the organisation since its inception.

He said Emmanuel’s commitment to the development of riverine and coastal communities and support for grassroots interventions had enabled the organisation to reach underserved populations across Lagos.

“We are particularly grateful to our Patron, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, for his continuous guidance, encouragement, and generous support towards the vision of Blue Lagos. His dedication to the Blue Economy agenda and his investment in community-focused initiatives have helped make projects such as this possible,” he added.

The Yegunda project represents the first phase of Blue Lagos’ broader intervention programme, with verification visits scheduled for the other nominated communities.

The organisation said it would continue to assess community needs and mobilise resources for interventions in water, health, livelihoods, environmental sustainability and social development across Lagos’ riverine and coastal settlements.
