AFRIMA, British High Commission Partner Ahead 9th Awards Ceremony

The All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA has entered into a strategic cultural partnership with the British High Commission in Nigeria to deepen creative exchange, strengthen cultural ties, and further amplify African music on the global stage as the 9th AFRIMA Awards draw closer.

The collaboration, sealed through a newly signed Cultural Cooperation Agreement, confirms that the British Deputy High Commission in Lagos will co-host the Welcome Soirée for AFRIMA nominees and guests on January 7, 2026, the official opening event of the 9th AFRIMA Awards Week.

The exclusive gathering will bring together AU officials, AFRIMA delegates, jury members, international guests, nominees, creatives and media professionals for an evening dedicated to networking and cultural connection.

Organised by the International Executive Committee of AFRIMA in partnership with the African Union Commission and the Lagos State Government as Host City, the 9th AFRIMA is widely recognised as Africa’s flagship global music awards.

AFRIMA’s Chief Experience Officer (CXO), Adenrele Niyi, described the partnership as a significant step in advancing cultural diplomacy through music.

“This partnership reflects AFRIMA’s mission to position African music as a global force,” Niyi said. “Beyond the awards, we are committed to building spaces where creativity meets opportunity and where African talent can confidently engage the world.

Working with the British High Commission expands our platform for industry innovation, collaboration and meaningful cultural exchange.”

She noted that the 2026 edition of AFRIMA would focus strongly on strengthening global creative-industry relationships, adding that collaborations such as this underscore the rising global relevance of African music.

The agreement was signed by Gill Lever OBE, Chargé d’Affaires of the British High Commission Nigeria, who reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s and Africa’s creative economies.

“The UK is delighted to partner with AFRIMA to celebrate the extraordinary creativity and talent of Africa’s music industry,” she said. “This collaboration reflects our commitment to strengthening cultural ties between the UK and Nigeria, and across the African continent. Our Jollof and Tea campaign has shown the power of bringing people together through culture, and we are excited to build on that spirit.”

The 9th AFRIMA Awards Week will run from January 7–11, 2026, featuring a series of high-profile events including the Diamond Showcase (Jan 7–8), Africa Music Business Summit (Jan 8), Host City Tour and CSR Visit, Music Village Concert (Jan 9), the Nominees & Industry Party (Jan 10), and the Red Carpet and Grand Awards Night (Jan 11).

The awards ceremony will be broadcast live to more than 84 countries.

LASU Dominates National Kickboxing Championship with 19 Medals Haul

The Lagos State University, LASU has disowned a viral video titled “Bandits Prank on Lasuites”, describing it as an unauthorised and unacceptable act capable of causing panic within the university community.

The video, produced by Datreez Entertainment TV and uploaded on Friday, 5 December 2025, showed individuals dressed in a manner that instilled fear as they moved around the campus with props, triggering alarm among students.

In a statement issued on Sunday, 7 December 2025, by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Thomas-Onashile Oluwayemisi A., the University stressed that it did not grant approval or authorisation for the recording.

“LASU Management did not endorse, approve, or permit the filming of the said video. The actions of Datreez Entertainment TV amounted to unauthorised filming on campus, which is unacceptable,” the statement read.

The institution condemned any content that portrays acts resembling banditry, terrorism, or violent extremism, noting that such pranks are capable of inciting fear, disrupting campus harmony, and undermining the sense of safety of students and staff—particularly at a time of heightened national security concerns in the country.

LASU reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe and peaceful learning environment and urged members of the university community to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the LASU Security Unit.

Nigeria has strengthened its footprint in global customs administration as the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, chaired his first meeting as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation, WCO Council, presiding over the 93rd Session of the WCO Policy Commission in Antigua, Guatemala.

The high-level gathering, held from December 2 to 4, 2025, at the historic Hotel Soleil, brought together Heads of Customs Administrations and senior officials from across the WCO’s six regions to deliberate on emerging issues in global trade and customs operations.

In his opening address, CGC Adeniyi welcomed delegates to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Antigua Guatemala and paid tribute to customs officers worldwide who have died in active service. He urged participants to engage constructively as the Commission navigates critical policy areas shaping the global customs ecosystem.

He was joined at the session by WCO Secretary General, Ian Saunders, and Guatemala’s Vice Minister of Public Finance, Hon. Patricia Joachin, who represented the host government. Delegates were also treated to a cultural evening at the iconic Capuchinas Ruins, showcasing Guatemala’s rich heritage.

Adeniyi’s leadership comes six months after his historic election as WCO Council Chair, a development widely hailed as a milestone for Nigeria and Africa. His election placed Nigeria at the forefront of an organisation representing 187 customs administrations worldwide.

Reflecting on the significance of the role, the CGC described his mandate as “a major responsibility for Nigeria and for Africa,” noting that his objective is to deliver impactful leadership that strengthens global trade, security, and inclusive customs governance.

His remarks echoed sentiments he earlier expressed in an exclusive WCO Global interview, The Customs Exchange: Conversations with Global Customs Leaders, where he described his election as a validation of Nigeria’s far-reaching customs reforms.

According to him, the confidence shown by the global customs community demonstrates that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) “is on track,” citing the Service’s modernisation drive, improved systems alignment, and expanding partnerships with international organisations.

He highlighted the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) programme, developed with WCO technical support, as one of Nigeria’s most impactful reforms, noting that it has reduced cargo clearance timelines, boosted revenue mobilisation, and enhanced trust with compliant traders.

Adeniyi also pointed to Nigeria’s adoption of key WCO instruments such as the SAFE Framework of Standards, the Time Release Study (TRS), and ongoing work on advance rulings as strong indicators of the NCS’ alignment with international best practices.

Calling for deeper cooperation among member administrations, the CGC underscored the value of diversity within the global customs community. “Our uniqueness is our strength,” he said. “We must allow that diversity to continue creating opportunities and progress for us.”

The Customs Area Controller of the Oyo/Osun Area Command, Comptroller Gambo Iyere Aliyu, has reaffirmed commitment to strengthening stakeholder engagement as part of efforts to improve security and economic stability in the region.

Comptroller Aliyu made this known on Sunday, December 7, 2025, during a courtesy and familiarization visit to the Palace of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja.

Speaking during the engagement, the Customs boss expressed gratitude for the warm reception by the Olubadan and acknowledged the vital support the Command continues to receive from the Ibadan traditional institution. He noted that the visit was aimed at reinforcing the longstanding partnership between the NCS and the revered palace.

Aliyu emphasized that the Oyo/Osun Command remains committed to delivering on its statutory mandates of revenue generation, trade facilitation and anti-smuggling operations. Describing Ibadan as a strategic commercial hub, he highlighted the twin challenges of economic opportunities and national security concerns in the region.

“The Nigeria Customs Service recognizes the vital role traditional rulers play in sustaining peace, order and community cooperation. With Your Imperial Majesty’s continued support and guidance, the Command will remain effective in safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interests,” he said.

He appealed to the Olubadan to continue sensitizing youths and traders against smuggling and economic sabotage, stressing that such activities undermine national development. Comptroller Aliyu assured that officers and men under his watch would remain professional, courteous and respectful of the cultural values of their host communities.

He also commended the palace for its existing cooperation with the Command, noting that the synergy has contributed significantly to successful anti-smuggling operations across Oyo and Osun States. He called for sustained collaboration to counter emerging smuggling strategies and ensure a secure environment for legitimate trade.

Responding, the Olubadan lauded the Customs Area Controller for the visit and encouraged the Service to intensify efforts in protecting Nigeria’s borders from economic saboteurs. He prayed for wisdom, strength and protection for Comptroller Aliyu and his officers.

The visit ended with the Customs Area Controller seeking the royal blessings of the Olubadan as the Command continues its drive toward enhanced stakeholder engagement and improved economic development.

Delivering the keynote address, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, said the state remains committed to building a safer, smarter, and greener megacity anchored on technology and strong public–private collaborations.

He disclosed that over the past five years, Lagos has deployed more than 2,500 kilometres of fibre-optic infrastructure, strengthened smart traffic systems, and expanded digital public services, improvements that have enhanced safety and efficiency for over one million residents.

Dr. Hamzat also announced that the Lagos State Science, Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC) has invested nearly ₦2 billion in more than 75 startups and research projects across key sectors including fintech, agritech, healthtech, edtech, construction tech, and climate innovation.

He added that the forthcoming Lagos Innovation Bill will institutionalise innovation as a key economic driver, protect intellectual property, expand access to funding, and deepen collaboration across government, academia, and industry.

He also confirmed that Lagos has established Nigeria’s first sub-national Cybersecurity Council, positioning the state for an AI- and IoT-powered future.

“Lagos is your laboratory and your launchpad into Africa and the world. We remain committed to reforms and investments that keep Lagos at the forefront of global innovation,” Hamzat said.

Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Olatunbosun Alake, highlighted Lagos’ exponential rise as Africa’s largest and most vibrant startup ecosystem.

He revealed that Lagos-based companies attracted more than $6 billion in funding between 2019 and 2024, accounting for nearly 80 percent of Nigeria’s 2,000 active startups.

Alake also announced the forthcoming Lagos Innovation Deal, a new framework designed to accelerate AI adoption, strengthen data protection, and institutionalise collaboration between government, the private sector, and academic institutions.

Founder of the Eko Innovation Centre, Dr. Victor Gbenga Afolabi, said the world’s leading cities must leverage future technologies to remain resilient, sustainable, and competitive.

“Cities generate 80 percent of global GDP, yet contribute 75 percent of global carbon emissions. Integrating future technologies is not optional, it is essential,” he stated.

The ancient Ondo Kingdom is gearing up for a major cultural spectacle as indigenes, residents and friends prepare to gather for the grand finale of Ekimogun Day 2025, scheduled for Saturday, December 27.

This year’s edition of the annual socio-cultural celebration will be hosted by the Osemawe and Paramount Ruler of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Dr. Victor Adesimbo Kiladejo, Jilo III, who will welcome an impressive lineup of distinguished royal fathers and national figures.

Among the top dignitaries expected are His Royal Majesty, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, Kusenla III, the Elegushi of Ikate Kingdom, Lagos, and the Ochi’Doma of Idoma Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Dr. John Elaigwu, both serving as Royal Fathers of the Day.

The Chairman of the Day is Dr. Jibayo Adeyeye of Nibanola Golf Resort, Ondo, while the Chief Launcher is Chief Victor Folami Awosika, the Lomafe of Ondo Kingdom.

In a statement, the Chairman of the National Ekimogun Day Planning Committee, Mr. Abiodun Akinjayeju, announced that the 2025 edition has been deliberately redesigned to deliver “a real carnival and real fun,” with a rich lineup of activities to enhance participation and elevate the cultural experience.

According to him, some pre-event activities, such as an intercollegiate football competition, have already begun. The festivities will climax with a grand gala night expected to draw Ondo elites, social clubs, dignitaries, and fun lovers from across Nigeria and the diaspora.

The musical lineup for the night features an array of star performers led by Afro-Juju legend Sir Shina Peters. Also billed to thrill guests are Musiliu Ishola, the trending face of Apala music; Dapsing, Ondo’s fast-rising crowd-pleaser; and Emperor Adegeye, son of the iconic King Sunny Ade, said to be a performer “in whom KSA himself is exceedingly confident and proud.”

Ekimogun Day, which began over three decades ago, has evolved into one of the most significant cultural events in southwestern Nigeria. Beyond its festive appeal, it serves as a major platform for fundraising toward homegrown development initiatives in Ondo Kingdom and for promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Ondo people.

Akinjayeju added that the 2025 edition has been “rebranded, reinvented, and repackaged” to encourage wider participation, especially from Ondo sons and daughters in the diaspora. The decision to host the grand finale between Christmas and New Year, he noted, is aimed at maximizing attendance and fostering greater cultural unity.

Soludo Unveils 2026 Budget, Earns Praise as ‘World-Class Economist’

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has been hailed for his economic vision and fiscal strategy following the presentation of the 2026 draft budget to the Anambra State House of Assembly.

The budget, titled “Changing Gears 3.0: Solution Continues,” marks the final fiscal plan of Soludo’s first term and is positioned to consolidate the administration’s achievements while accelerating development ahead of his second term.

Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, described the budget presentation on November 25, 2025, as “epochal,” noting that the figures reaffirm Soludo’s pedigree as a “world-class economist and global citizen poised to transform Anambra into a destination of choice.”

Soludo’s widespread political support was re-emphasised after he secured re-election in all 21 local government areas, winning 73% of total votes in what was regarded as one of the state’s highest voter turnouts.

In his message of unity, he stated, “Ours is one state, one people, with one agenda. Let us unite and build Anambra together.”

The proposed ₦757.88 billion budget for 2026 represents a 24.1% increase from the 2025 figure of ₦606.99 billion. Recurrent expenditure is projected at ₦162.6 billion, while capital expenditure stands at ₦595.3 billion, accounting for 79% of the total budget.

Soludo said the structure reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to delivering tangible results for Ndi Anambra.

The commissioner highlighted that since the beginning of the administration, the state has not borrowed to fund deficits. The 2026 financing gap of ₦225.7 billion, representing 29.8% of the total budget, may be funded through privatisation proceeds, increased IGR, and concessionary borrowing for bankable projects.

FirstBank Basketball Club of Nigeria, popularly known as the “Elephant Girls”, have secured their spot in the final round of the Women’s Basketball League Africa, WBLA, scheduled to hold in Cairo, Egypt from 5-14 December 2025.

The Elephant Girls put on a commanding performance at the FIBA Africa Zone 3 Qualifiers in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, winning all three games.

Representing Nigeria as the country’s sole team in the tournament, they overcame fierce competition from Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Benin Republic, Ghana, and Togo in the Zone.

Their undefeated run included a 66–55 upset against home favorites CSA of Côte d’Ivoire and a thrilling 63–59 comeback win against FBA of Côte d’Ivoire, after trailing by 20 points in the second quarter.

The remarkable performance, marked by resilience, discipline skill, and mental strength, earned the team a triumphant return to continental basketball after a six-year absence.

Emerging as champions of Zone 3 and the only English-speaking team to advance, the Elephant Girls have reaffirmed FirstBank’s long-standing commitment to promoting women’s sports in Nigeria and across Africa.
