Ogun Police Commission New Area Command, Divisions, Police Post to Boost Community Policing

The Ogun State Police Command has expanded its operational capacity with the commissioning of a new Area Command, two Divisional Headquarters, a Police Post, and additional operational assets to strengthen grassroots policing and rapid response across the state.

The new facilities were delivered through collaborative efforts involving the state government, traditional institutions, corporate bodies, and host communities.

The Executive Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, represented by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, commissioned the Ijebu Igbo Area Command and its Divisional Headquarters.

The event was attended by the Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Olatokunbo Joseph Talabi; the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo; traditional rulers; community leaders; and other dignitaries.

At the ceremony, the Orimolusi of Ijebu Igbo, HRH Oba Lawrence Jayeoba Adebajo, was commended for mobilizing community support towards the project, while a patrol van was donated to enhance operational efficiency.

The Ijebu Igbo Area Command comprises five divisions, Ijebu Igbo, Ago Iwoye, Awa Ijebu, Oru Ijebu, and Atan Ijebu, a development expected to improve coordination, intelligence sharing, and police visibility within the axis.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police also commissioned the Afon Divisional Headquarters under the Imeko Area Command, further expanding police presence and operational coverage.

The ceremony was attended by traditional rulers, community leaders, and local government representatives, with a patrol vehicle handed over to support field operations.

In a separate event, the CP commissioned the Japara Police Post, which is expected to extend security coverage to underserved communities, enhance rapid response, and strengthen intelligence gathering while fostering closer collaboration between residents and law enforcement.

The Police Community Relations Committee, led by State Chairman, Venerable Samson Popoola, participated in all commissioning ceremonies, underscoring the partnership between the police and stakeholders in enhancing security architecture in the state.

CP Ogunlowo expressed appreciation to the Ogun State Government, traditional institutions, corporate organisations, and community stakeholders for their support.

He charged officers to uphold professionalism and ensure the effective deployment of the new facilities and assets in protecting lives and property, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to proactive, intelligence-led, and community-focused policing.

Lagos CP Restores Normalcy at Otto-Ijanikin, Arrests Seven Suspects, Recovers Firearm

The Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, on Friday personally led a joint team of operatives and tactical squads to restore order and reopen the Lagos-Badagry Expressway at the Otto-Ijanikin axis following a communal clash between youths of Ijanikin and Otto.

The expressway, which had been blocked for several hours due to the unrest, was successfully cleared and reopened to traffic at about 9:00 a.m., allowing motorists and residents to resume normal activities.

According to the Lagos State Police Command, the clash resulted in the death of one Akinyemi Omo Akin, who was reportedly shot and later died in hospital. The Commissioner of Police has directed a full-scale investigation into the incident, to be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti.

The Command clarified that preliminary investigations indicate the deceased did not die from a stray police bullet. It stated that prior to police arrival, reports from members of the public suggested that suspected cultists were brought in by both sides and engaged in a gun duel, during which the victim was believed to have been shot.

Seven suspects from both groups have been arrested and are currently in police custody. The suspects are said to have made voluntary statements detailing the roles they played in the clash.

Police also recovered one locally made pistol and two live cartridges from one of the suspects.

Tactical squads and anti-riot personnel have been deployed to the affected communities and surrounding areas to apprehend other fleeing suspects and prevent any further breakdown of law and order.

The Command warned that it will not tolerate acts capable of disrupting the peace in any part of the state and assured that those arrested will face the full weight of the law. Parents and guardians were urged to caution their wards against involvement in violence.

CP Jimoh encouraged residents to go about their lawful businesses without fear and called on members of the public to report suspicious activities to the Command’s emergency lines.

NIMC Intensifies Ward-Level NIN Registration As Lagos Records 14 Million

The National Identity Management Commission, NIMC has intensified efforts to boost enrollment into the National Identification Number, NIN database, rolling out a ward-level registration exercise across the country.

Speaking during a live programme on Lagos Traffic Radio 96.1FM, Lagos Regional Coordinator, Oladele Lassisi, said the initiative followed a presidential directive aimed at expanding access to registration, especially in hard-to-reach communities.

He revealed that over one hundred and twenty million Nigerians have so far been enrolled nationwide, while Lagos State alone has recorded over fourteen million registrations through more than fifty-five enrollment centres spread across local governments and special locations.

Oladele explained that the ongoing ward-level exercise, which commenced on February sixteen, is a six-week pilot programme that will run on a rotational basis across Nigeria’s eight thousand, eight hundred and nine wards.

According to him, the objective is to take registration closer to the people rather than waiting for citizens to visit centres only when the NIN becomes urgently required for services such as bank transactions, passport applications or school admissions.

He stressed that fresh NIN registration is free of charge at official NIMC centres and during the ward-level exercise, warning Nigerians against paying unauthorised agents.

While licensed agents may request logistics fees for special arrangements, he maintained that citizens can avoid such charges by visiting designated NIMC offices directly.

Also speaking, Lagos East State Coordinator, Olumide Aremu, clarified that the NIN is a foundational identity that cuts across all sectors, unlike functional identification documents such as driver’s licences or bank verification numbers.

He noted that NIMC has harmonised several Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) with NIN records but urged Nigerians who have not completed biometric capture to visit centres for fingerprint and photograph enrollment.

On data security concerns, Regional Head of Inspectorate, Compliance and Enforcement, Victoria Ikemefuna, assured Nigerians that the NIMC database is secure and equipped to detect unauthorised access.

She warned against sharing NIN details indiscriminately, explaining that identity theft remains a risk if individuals release their numbers without proper verification.

Ikemefuna added that only authorised verification through the official NIMC mobile application should be used to authenticate identity details.

The Commission encouraged Nigerians, including those in the diaspora, to take advantage of the ongoing exercise and ensure they are properly registered, as the NIN remains a critical requirement for accessing government and private sector services.

NIMC further advised citizens seeking corrections to their records that modifications can now be completed within 48 to 72 hours, either at designated centres or through approved self-service platforms.

The Lagos State Security Trust Fund, LSSTF has appointed Dr. Moses Oladimeji as State Coordinator of its newly launched Campaign Against Crime, Cultism and Other Vices, LSSTF-CACCOV.

The appointment was announced alongside six other committee members who will support the implementation of the initiative aimed at strengthening community-based crime prevention across Lagos State.

According to the Executive Secretary and CEO of LSSTF, Ayo Ogunsan, the campaign is designed to promote advocacy, community engagement and youth mentorship as part of long-term crime prevention strategies.

He explained that Dr. Oladimeji will supervise statewide outreach programmes, including school campaigns, community sensitisation walks, mentorship initiatives and partnerships with traditional rulers, faith-based organisations, youth groups and civil society stakeholders.

Ogunsan noted that the LSSTF-CACCOV initiative is intended to complement the efforts of security agencies by addressing social factors that encourage crime, such as cultism, substance abuse and youth violence.

He stressed that negative social behaviours often thrive in environments with poor guidance, weak community structures and limited positive engagement opportunities for young people.

The new State Coordinator is expected to lead advocacy programmes aimed at discouraging recruitment into cult groups and promoting positive behavioural change among youths.

The Fund also called on parents, teachers, community leaders and the media to support the campaign as the committee begins full implementation across Lagos State.

Other members of the seven-man LSSTF-CACCOV committee include Uzezi Akinwoleola (Assistant State Coordinator/General Secretary), Nathaniel Olugbogi (Head, Digital Communication, Strategy and Technology), Prominence Promise (Head, Human Resources and Training), Joseph Akinwoleola (Head, Education, Advocacy and Empowerment), Taiwo Idris (Head, Media, Press and Public Relations) and Mesole Emmanuel (Head, Community Outreach and Programmes).

NAOSNP Hails Appointment of Acting IGP Tunji Disu

The National Association of Online Security News Publishers, NAOSNP has congratulated the newly appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, describing his elevation as well deserved.

In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Eric Elezuo, the association commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing Disu to head the Nigeria Police Force, noting that his wealth of experience, professionalism and integrity would boost officers’ morale and strengthen efforts to combat crime nationwide.

Disu takes over from the immediate past Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who resigned to attend to family matters.

NAOSNP described the Acting IGP as a seasoned officer with a remarkable track record, expressing confidence that he would bring his years of policing intelligence and leadership to bear in his new national assignment.

Also speaking, NAOSNP National President, Mayor Oki Olatunji Samson, lauded the appointment, saying Disu has consistently demonstrated competence in various strategic positions across the country.

Until his appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon, Lagos.

He previously held key roles including Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Disu enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force in May 1992 and has served in multiple operational and administrative capacities.

The association also appreciated the contributions of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, acknowledging his engagement with the media body during his tenure.

Acting IGP Disu has since assumed office.

LSSTF Launches Community Campaign Against Crime, Cultism, Violence in Lagos

Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, LSSTF, Dr. Ayo Ogunsan, has launched a major public campaign aimed at curbing crime, cultism, drug abuse and youth violence across the state.

The initiative, known as the Lagos State Security Trust Fund Campaign Against Crime, Cultism and Other Vices, LSSTF-CACCOV, was unveiled on Friday at the Fund’s office in Alausa, Ikeja.

Speaking at the launch, Ogunsan said sustainable safety in Lagos requires more than enforcement-driven measures. He explained that the new campaign is designed to tackle the root causes of insecurity through education, advocacy, mentorship and stronger community structures.

According to him, cultism and related vices thrive where young people lack guidance, positive engagement and credible role models.

He noted that the initiative will focus on value reorientation, school outreach programmes, community walks and multi-stakeholder partnerships involving families, schools, traditional rulers, faith-based organisations, civil society groups and security agencies.

Ogunsan stressed that LSSTF-CACCOV is not a substitute for conventional law enforcement but a complementary preventive strategy. He added that informed and empowered communities remain the first line of defence against crime.

A seven-member committee was inaugurated to drive the initiative, with Dr. Moses Oladimeji appointed as State Cordinator.

In his acceptance remarks, Oladimeji described the programme as timely, noting concerns over youth involvement in drugs and other social vices.

He said the committee would focus on engagement, skills development and connecting young people to vocational opportunities, with plans to showcase beneficiaries at the Fund’s town hall meeting later in the year.

The award ceremony will hold on March 4, 2026, during Wema Bank’s International Women’s Day event in Lagos, where five winners will emerge.

IMO, NIMASA Sensitise UNILAG Students on Maritime Career Opportunities

The Institute of Maritime Studies, University of Lagos, IMS-UNILAG, has hosted delegations from the International Maritime Organization, IMO and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA as part of an awareness campaign on emerging opportunities in the maritime industry.

The engagement, held at the IMS-UNILAG Building, on Thursday, February 26, 2026, was designed to expose young people to the vast potential within the global maritime sector and encourage early interest in maritime education and careers.

Addressing senior secondary school students from the University of Lagos International School, Mr. Subaskar Sitsabeshan of the IMO delivered a presentation on the fundamentals of shipping and its critical role in driving the global economy.

He outlined the IMO’s role as the regulator of international shipping, examined Nigeria’s strategic maritime position in continental trade, and highlighted growing sustainability concerns, particularly greenhouse gas emissions.

Sitsabeshan also shed light on the IMO’s GreenVoyage2050 Programme, stressing the need to inspire greater youth participation in maritime studies. According to him, attracting the next generation is vital to bridging generational gaps, improving gender diversity and meeting the evolving workforce demands of the global maritime industry.

In separate remarks, the Director of IMS-UNILAG, Mary Odukoya, and Tumininu Onamade, Country Director/Adviser on Sustainable Value Chains at Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the event as a strategic platform for raising awareness about maritime opportunities while stimulating interest among young learners.

The delegation also paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Foluso Afolabi-Lesi, where discussions centred on potential collaborations and partnerships, particularly with the World Maritime University.
