Experts Raise Alarm Over Rising Infertility Rate, Seek Government's Intervention

Medical experts and key stakeholders have expressed deep concern over the rising rate of infertility in Nigeria, particularly among men, calling for urgent government intervention and greater public awareness.

The alarm was raised at the 7th edition of the Parah Fertility Conference, held in Lagos over the weekend, with the theme: “Fertility Puzzle: Unlocking Your Path to Parenthood.”

The event brought together fertility specialists, psychologists, and advocates to address the growing challenges facing couples struggling to conceive.

Medical Director of Medison Women Fertility Centre and lead speaker at the conference, Dr. Lateef Akinola, described the increasing cases of infertility in the country as alarming.

Speaking on the topic “Understanding the Root Causes of Infertility in Male and Female,” he emphasized the need for stronger collaborations between government and private stakeholders to improve access to fertility treatments.

“Gone are the days when infertility was seen as a woman’s issue. Today, more cases of infertility are being traced to male factors, and it’s time for society to acknowledge this shift,”Akinola said.

Dr. Akinola, encouraged couples to explore all available medical options rather than relying solely on prayer and fasting, stressing that there is no difference between a child conceived through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and one conceived naturally.

He also urged men to be more supportive of their partners during the trying period of infertility.

CEO of Lifeline Fertility Clinic, Dr. Kemi Ailoje, spoke on “Failed Cycle/Recurrent Pregnancy Loss: Causes and Solutions,” advising couples to manage stress and anxiety and to remain spiritually grounded during their fertility journey.

“There’s nothing impossible for God to do,” she said, while also offering practical medical insights into treatment options.

Addressing alternative reproductive methods, CEO of Chemistry Health Solution, Mrs. Oluwakemi Amao, gave an in-depth presentation on surrogacy.

Her talk, titled “Understanding the Process, Legalities, Costs, and Emotional Aspects of Surrogacy,” aimed to demystify the process and present it as a viable path to parenthood for couples facing complex infertility issues.

Also, Clinical psychologist Dr. Leonard Okonkwo emphasized the importance of emotional and psychological resilience, urging couples to hold on to hope and faith amid their struggles.

In her welcome address,convener of the Parah Family Foundation, Princess Dayo Odukoya, reflected on the conference’s seven-year journey.

“This initiative was born out of a deep burden to support couples facing the silent struggle of infertility. Through tears, challenges, and triumphs, we’ve built a sacred community where stigma is broken, voices are heard, and healing takes root,”she said.

A Nigerian columnist and publisher of Genevieve Magazine, Betty Irabor, who was the special guest at the conference also shared her experience on infertility, urged couple experiencing infertility to always work as a team.

At the end of the conference, two couples were given free IVF treatment .

LASG Commences Second Round of National Immunization Plus Days

Lagos State Government, through the State Primary Health Care Board, LSPHCB in collaboration with its development partners, has flagged off the second round of the National Immunization Plus Days, NIPDs across all Local Government Areas, LGAs and Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs.

Speaking at the flag-off at the official ceremony held in Epe LGA Secretariat, the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, represented by Chief Mrs. Oluwatoyin Badejo emphasized that the health and development of children are pivotal to the future of any society.

She noted that the present administration remains unwavering in its commitment to child health, and its efforts continue to yield positive results.

“We have witnessed a transformative journey in our healthcare sector, one that has significantly improved maternal and child health indicators in Lagos State.

Our government has made substantial investments in healthcare infrastructure, equipping hospitals and clinics with state-of-the-art facilities. The expansion of primary healthcare centers has brought quality healthcare closer to the people, especially our children,” she stated.

Dr. Sanwo-Olu also highlighted several initiatives aimed at supporting mothers and children, including free antenatal care, immunization drives, the Ilera Eko health insurance scheme, and nutrition programs. She commended the role of community outreach programs in empowering families with the knowledge to make informed health decisions.

She lauded the dedication of health workers whose tireless efforts have led to a reduction in maternal mortality and improved survival and well-being of children in their early years.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the LSPHCB, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, mni, expressed gratitude to the First Lady for her consistent support. He explained that the immunization campaign will span four days, with an additional two days for mop-up activities to ensure no child is left behind.

The Permanent Secretary explained that to ensure the success of the program, a variety of strategies have been deployed, including fixed post teams at primary healthcare centers, house-to-house visits, and transit teams stationed at key public locations such as schools, markets, motor parks, and places of worship.

Dr. Mustafa emphasized that the focus of the campaign is to boost vaccination coverage, achieve herd immunity, and maintain Nigeria’s polio-free status noting that recent outbreaks in neighboring countries have underscored the importance of maintaining high immunity levels across communities.

During the campaign, health workers will also review child health cards and administer any missed routine vaccines, thereby offering protection against other vaccine-preventable diseases. Furthermore, the state is intensifying school-based outreach for the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer among adolescent girls.

Calling on stakeholders to support the campaign, Dr. Mustafa stated, “Every parent who ensures their child is immunized is contributing to a global effort to eradicate polio. We thank our hardworking health workers, coordinators, development partners, religious and community leaders for their continued dedication.”

“Let us join hands to protect every child in every ward and community. Together, we can build a healthier Lagos where no child suffers or dies from a vaccine preventable disease,” he concluded.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos Health District 3, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke noted that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring that the vaccination is successful statewide. She assured that all areas will be touched including riverine areas and all other hard to reach areas .

Present at the ceremony were Permanent Secretaries of Lagos Health District 4, Dr. Abimbola Bowale, Health District 5, Dr. Dapo Asiyanbi and Health District 6, Dr. Abimbola Mabogunje.

Others are Vice Chairman of Epe Local Govt, Traditional rulers, representative of religious bodies, market leaders and other local Govt executives.

Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka has called for greater collaboration between the real estate, tourism, and hospitality sectors, emphasising that compliance with existing laws remains a vital enabler for sustainable development and economic growth.

She made this call during her address at the 2025 Annual Conference of the Female Lawyers in Real Estate Practice (FELIREP), held on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Four Points by Sheraton, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Represented by the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board, Mrs. Bukola Agbaminoja, the Commissioner, noted that harmonising policies across key sectors will unlock opportunities in hospitality-centric developments such as resorts and cultural tourism zones.

She maintained that the Lagos State Government is aligning real estate with tourism through major projects like the Lagos Waterfront Regeneration and Lekki Creative City, noting that “compliance is not a bottleneck, but rather a catalyst for sustainable growth.”

Also speaking at the event, the Lagos State Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, represented by the Director of Legal Services in the Ministry of Housing, Mrs. Bukade Idowu Koya emphasised the importance of strengthening state-level housing policies for improved compliance and sustainable urban development.

He noted that housing policies serve as the backbone of effective urban planning, fostering economic growth, social stability, and human dignity.

In her welcome address, the President of FELIREP, Mrs. Peace Anomneze painted a stark picture of the challenges confronting the real estate sector in Nigeria.

She highlighted issues such as housing deficits, rampant fraudulent transactions, recurring building collapses, title disputes, and persistent land registry inefficiencies. “Regulatory oversight gaps can cost lives, livelihoods, and ultimately derail economic growth,” she said.

Mrs. Anomneze urged all stakeholders, including legal professionals, government agencies, private investors, and financial institutions, to work together towards harmonising real estate laws at both the federal and state levels to ensure transparency, professionalism, and accountability across the board.

During the official handover, the Admin Director of LSSTF, Mr. Adegbola Lewis presented the vehicles to Brigadier General Olawale Mathew Oyekola, Commander of the 9th Brigade of the Nigerian Army, which oversees OP MESA operations.

Mr. Adegbola said he donation underscores the Fund’s continued commitment to supporting security agencies with essential resources needed to safeguard lives and property across the state.

he explained that the newly presented vehicles are expected to strengthen rapid response capabilities and operational efficiency in tackling crime and other threats.

INEC Chairman Commends Governor Soludo for Improved Security in Anambra

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has lauded Governor Charles Soludo for his security initiatives, which have led to a remarkable improvement in the safety of the people and the peace being experienced in Anambra State.

Prof. Yakubu made this announcement during his opening remarks at the second quarterly consultative meeting with political parties held at the INEC Conference Room in Abuja on Thursday, 26 June 2025.

According to SSA to the Governor Soludo on New media, Mazi Ejimofor, the INEC boss stated that the prevailing atmosphere in Anambra State is calm and peaceful, a welcome development in the lead-up to the November 8, 2025, governorship election.

“The INEC Chairman applauded the governor for this achievement and urged him to sustain the current security tempo and safeguard the security architecture in place to ensure a smooth, free, fair, and credible electoral process”.

Prof. Yakubu was said to have recalled the distressing security challenges that marred preparations for the 2021 governorship election in the state.

“He lamented the unfortunate incidents in which INEC’s State Headquarters in Awka was attacked, leading to parts of the office being burned and several Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines destroyed”.

Yakubu, the statement added, asserted that several INEC Local Government Area offices were also set ablaze, and electoral materials worth billions of naira were destroyed. At the same time, members of staff were attacked and injured during that tempestuous period.

Against this backdrop, Prof. Yakubu emphasized the importance of sustaining the improved security situation in the state to prevent a recurrence of the 2021 scenario.

He further reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and successful conduct of the forthcoming governorship election.

LASG Inaugurates 17-Member Committee to Draft, Implement Policy for Non-State Schools

The Lagos State Government, through the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), has inaugurated a 17-member committee tasked with drafting and implementing a comprehensive policy for non-state schools in the state.

This move aims to standardize the delivery of education in private and mission-owned institutions which ensures alignment with both national benchmarks and Lagos State’s unique educational needs.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held on Thursday at the OEQA Headquarters Conference Room in Alausa, Ikeja, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Abisola Dokumu-Adegbite, noted that the initiative was in consonance with Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s vision of “leaving no child behind” by providing equitable, high-quality education to all children, regardless of school type.

“The committee is expected to produce a policy of world-class standard,” she stated, urging members to prioritize both present and future needs while promting educational equity.

” I hope I have your assurances as I Inaugurates you today to deliver unto us within the specific time line, a document that is both standard and useable over the years” Dokumu- Adegbite started.

She concluded by assuring the committee of her continuous involvement and oversight.

LASG Inaugurates 17-Member Committee to Draft, Implement Policy for Non-State Schools

In his opening remarks, the Coordinating Director of OEQA, Mr. Remi Abdul, , described the inauguration as a landmark step in the government’s broader mission to transform the education sector.

“This initiative is setting the agenda for the standardization of non-state schools in Lagos and potentially across Nigeria,” said Mr. Abdul.

He commended the DAWN Commission and PLANE for their technical support and emphasized Lagos State’s leadership in localizing the National Policy for Non-State Schools recently approved by the National Council for Education.

The committee is chaired by Dr. Sulaimon Ogunmuyiwa, Director of Private Education and Special Programmes at OEQA. Dr. Ogunmuyiwa who outlined the committee’s key responsibilities, which include identifying gaps in existing regulations, aligning with national policy frameworks and developing a draft policy for legislative approval by the Lagos State House of Assembly.

“Once implemented, this policy will provide non-government education investors with a unified, transparent framework—replacing outdated guidelines and simplifying compliance,” said Dr. Ogunmuyiwa. The committee is expected to submit its draft within two months.

The initiative received broad support from various education stakeholders. Chief Alaka Yusuf, President of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Lagos Chapter, remarked:

“This policy will enhance the quality of education and ensure consistency across both public and private institutions in Lagos.”

Similarly, Reverend Father Vincent Oluwafemi Bankole, representative of Catholic Mission Schools in Lagos, called the policy “a step in the right direction”, emphasizing its importance in guiding all non-state actors toward a shared vision of quality education.

Alhaji Yaqeen Mansur, Chairman of the League of Muslim School Proprietors in Lagos, praised the initiative as a long-overdue move:

“For the first time, we are getting it right. This policy will serve as a working paper for every non-state school operator and contribute to Lagos State’s developmental goals.”

The committee’s work would culminate in the submission of the draft policy to the Lagos State House of Assembly for legislative backing, which would pave the way for implementation across all non-state educational institutions in the state.

Earlier, the CEO of BusinessDay Media, Aigbogun, said the country stands at a critical inflection point in its energy transition journey, that for decades the power sector has struggled under the weight of underperformance, limited infrastructure, and inadequate investment.

He said despite a theoretical installed generation capacity exceeding 11,165.4 megawatts (MW), the country delivers an average of only 4,000 to 5,000MW to homes and businesses, far below the demand of a country with over 200 million people, hence the need for the session for the way forward.

The panelists at the session stressed that the state’s power generation is in transition and in terms of readiness, the development varies across states, with Enugu, the first to implement it, moving progressively with policies and regulations suitable for investment.

It was asserted that there is need for clarification on the restrictions on state and national regulations, and licensing models, for an investor that wants to transcend different states, whether there should be a single license for the business or multiple, as these issues act as bottlenecks for growth.

They added that the return on investment should be attractive to investors to enhance participation.

Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, commenting on the presentation, reaffirmed the Authority’s dedication to protecting the lives and livelihoods of sanitation workers, describing them as frontline environmental heroes who play a vital role in keeping Lagos clean and habitable.

Gbadegesin explained that the financial assistance was part of LAWMA’s structured welfare package for sanitation workers under its operational coverage, which includes accident compensation, insurance, regular health checks, and periodic safety training.

He noted that the initiative aligned with the Authority’s broader commitment to human dignity, social equity, and inclusive governance, noting that no sanitation worker should be left to suffer in silence or neglect due to work-related hazards.

“At LAWMA, we believe that social protection is not an option but a necessity. As we work tirelessly to improve the city’s waste management systems, we are equally investing in the people who power that system. Their wellbeing remains central to our mission,” he noted.

The MD/CEO, reiterating the importance of health and safety practices among sanitation workers, urged sanitation workers to remain vigilant, especially when operating in high-traffic areas and at night, assuring that the Authority would continue to upgrade its health and safety protocols to minimise occupational risks.

The LAWMA boss said the cheque presentation was one of several welfare-focused initiatives undertaken by the Authority, as it worked to institutionalise a sustainable and dignified work environment for all sanitation personnel across Lagos State.
