In commemoration of World Bicycle Day, the GRA Empowerment Foundation and the Waka Community International Foundation have unveiled the “Waka Plus” initiative, also known as “Waka and Pedal”.
Gabriel Rotimi Aroge, Founder of GRA explained that the initiative seeks to promote walking and cycling as safe, sustainable and accessible modes of transportation, particularly for schoolchildren and underserved communities.
Aroge who stated this at a cycling rally that began at Ikeja City Mall and ended at the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC Lagos Command Headquarters in Ojodu said Waka and Pedal also aims to foster a culture of active mobility that supports education, road safety, and community.
He emphasized the impact of the initiative on local development:
“Through initiatives like ‘Waka and Pedal,’ we are not just promoting walking or cycling; we are fostering a culture of safe, active mobility that directly addresses the UN’s ‘leave no one behind’ vision, ensuring children have increased access to education and safer journeys,” he stated.
Favour Ofure of the Chevron Neighborhood Waka Chapter, representing the Waka Community International Foundation, said the Foundation believes that by making walking and cycling a core part of daily life, especially for children, it contributes significantly to their well-being, educational attainment, and the overall sustainable development of Nigerian communities.
“Our partnership with GRA Empowerment Foundation is a natural fit. The ‘Waka and Pedal ” concept embodies our shared commitment to empowering communities through accessible and safe movement.
This is part of how we keep changing lives one waka at a time, she added.”
Also speaking, Lagos FRSC Sector Commander, Kehinde Hamzat who was represented by the Deputy Sector Commander (Operations), Lucas Oguntade reiterated the Corps’ commitment to advancing road safety.
He launched the sticker message: “Make Walking and Cycling Safe”, aligning with the UN’s Global Road Safety Week agenda and the cardinal message of Waka Community International Foundation.
The launch event featured a range of activities including prize presentations, a mini-exhibition, and photo sessions, all aimed at raising awareness about sustainable transport and road safety.
