The Ogun State Police Command says it will prioritise security at the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC office and strengthen intelligence-led operations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, gave the assurance on Wednesday during a visit to INEC’s state office in Abeokuta, where he met the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Feyijimi Saseyi.
Ojajuni described INEC as a critical institution in Nigeria’s democratic process, declaring that the commission’s office would become the command’s “second office” until the end of the elections.
He said the command’s preparations would focus on early threat assessment, intelligence gathering, information sharing and coordinated deployment to protect electoral officials, voters, election materials and facilities.
The commissioner said security operations would be conducted professionally, impartially and in accordance with the law.
He also recalled a security workshop previously organised by the command in Abeokuta, which brought together INEC and other security stakeholders to strengthen coordination ahead of the polls.
Responding, Saseyi said the commission was committed to working with the police and other stakeholders to deliver free, fair, transparent and credible elections.
Ojajuni urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to shun violence and intimidation, respect the law and avoid actions capable of undermining the electoral process.
He also encouraged residents to report credible security concerns through the nearest police station or established command communication channels, while warning against spreading unverified information.
The command said it would continue to collaborate with INEC and other security agencies to promote public safety and support a peaceful electoral process.
