NCC Sets Up Working Group to Tackle Online Safety, AI Risks

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC has established an Internet Governance Working Group to coordinate stakeholder action on online safety, artificial intelligence accountability, internet fraud and privacy protection.

The platform was launched on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at the inaugural NCC Internet Governance Symposium in Lagos, as the commission called for stronger cooperation to address emerging challenges in Nigeria’s digital environment.

Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, Abraham Oshadami, who delivered the opening address on behalf of the NCC Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Aminu Maida, said internet governance had implications for public trust, security, opportunities and users’ rights beyond technology and connectivity.

He warned that the rapid growth of artificial intelligence was transforming how people learn, work, communicate and access services, while raising concerns about harmful content, fraud, privacy, accountability and child protection.

Oshadami said no single institution could adequately address the challenges without cooperation across the communications sector and other relevant stakeholders.

He identified the NCC’s Internet Code of Practice (ICOP) 2026 as a framework for promoting responsible online conduct, noting that its effectiveness would depend on clear expectations, stakeholder engagement and consistent implementation.

He also highlighted the Cyber Resilience Framework for the Nigeria Communication Sector (CRF-NCS), which aims to strengthen the security and resilience of infrastructure supporting digital services.

The newly launched working group is expected to provide a continuing platform for stakeholder engagement, identify practical priorities and coordinate responses to issues affecting Nigeria’s digital environment.

Oshadami urged participants to move beyond discussions and commit to practical actions, stressing the need for sustained collaboration to build a safer, more secure and responsible internet for Nigerians.
