The Nigerian Red Cross Society, NRCS has called on Well Meaning Individuals, Corporate Bodies, and Big Conglomerates to support its course to raise two point five billion Naira to assist the thirty-one point five million Nigerians at risk of severe hunger and malnutrition by October 2024.
President of the NRCS, Oluyemisi Adeaga, made the call at a pre-event press conference explaining that by Saturday, September 28, 2024, the Red Cross would launch a fundraiser under the theme: “Keeping Humanity Alive”.
Adeaga, represented at the event by the Chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross Lagos State Branch, Adebola Kolawole, noted the food insecurity level in Nigeria is at a tipping point, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action to avert a humanitarian crisis.
He also highlighted the alarming rise in the number of vulnerable individuals, up from twenty-six point five million last year, attributing this increase to a combination of conflict, drought, and inflation.
”With the 2.5 billion naira we aim to raise, we will be able to scale up our operations, bringing lifesaving assistance to the hardest-hit regions of the country. Every naira donated will go directly toward providing food, clean water, and basic sanitation services, the three essentials for survival.

According to him, the Red Cross has historically been cautious in soliciting funds, with the last large-scale appeal made for World War II veterans. Still, the current situation in the country necessitates immediate intervention.
