The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has vowed to stop energy theft and meter tampering along the 132kV Ikorodu-Sagamu corridor, where up to 100MW of electricity is reportedly unaccounted for annually, resulting in an estimated ₦120 billion loss in a single year.
Tegbe issued the warning on Friday during a meeting with industrial operators along the corridor, directing stakeholders to work together on a transparent and science-based investigation to determine the causes of the power losses.
The Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring steady electricity supply to industries under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that efforts to improve supply must be matched by accountability across the electricity value chain.
The meeting was attended by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer and Executive Directors of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), representatives of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and the Managing Directors of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company and Ikeja Electric.
Tegbe’s intervention comes amid concerns over significant discrepancies between electricity supplied to the industrial corridor and energy accounted for by market participants.
He warned against practices capable of undermining the integrity of the power system, including energy theft and meter tampering, and called for a coordinated effort to establish the facts behind the reported losses.
The Minister said resolving the discrepancies would be critical to sustaining reliable electricity supply to industries and strengthening accountability within Nigeria’s power sector.
