Lagos State University, LASU has issued a clarification regarding reports suggesting a widespread shift to online learning, emphasizing that only a small fraction of courses will be delivered primarily via digital platforms.
In a statement, LASU management confirmed that out of 4,095 courses offered across the institution, only 197 large-capacity courses, those with enrolments exceeding 400 students will adopt a virtual format.
This measure is part of the University’s enhanced blended learning policy aimed at improving the learning experience for high-enrolment classes.
“All other tutorials, seminars, laboratory practicals, and smaller courses will continue in-person. Students are expected to attend campus for the majority of their academic activities,” the statement noted.
LASU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, stressed that the policy is a strategic, data-driven decision designed to optimize resources, enhance teaching quality, and prepare students for a digitally integrated world.
She emphasized that the narrative suggesting students are being kept at home is misleading.
The University highlighted that the blended learning approach aligns with the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) drive to integrate e-learning into Nigerian higher education.
Significant investments have been made in support infrastructure, including upgraded campus-wide Wi-Fi, dedicated ICT hubs, and reliable power supply to ensure students are not disadvantaged.
“This policy is not an administrative shortcut but a focused effort to manage large classes more effectively while maintaining the integrity of the student learning experience,” Professor Olatunji-Bello said. “Students will continue to enjoy full access to libraries, laboratories, sporting facilities, medical facilities, and the broader campus experience.”
LASU encouraged students and parents to seek accurate information through official channels and described the hybrid learning initiative as a forward-looking step toward a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready institution.
