The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has announced that the 2026 edition of the Lagos Fanti Carnival will hold on April 6, as part of efforts to promote cultural heritage and tourism in the state.
Speaking at a press conference, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the carnival as one of Lagos’ most iconic cultural events, reflecting the city’s rich Afro-Brazilian heritage and historical ties with returnees from Brazil.
She explained that beyond entertainment, the carnival represents a living expression of identity, resilience, and community, showcased through colourful costumes, music, dance, and theatrical performances.
The event is scheduled to take place at Tafawa Balewa Square, which will be transformed into a vibrant cultural hub for residents, tourists, and culture enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond.
According to Benson-Awoyinka, the carnival plays a significant role in promoting cultural tourism, supporting local businesses, and reinforcing Lagos’ reputation as a leading arts and culture destination in Africa.
She added that deliberate efforts are being made to preserve cultural heritage while making it more appealing to younger generations.
Also speaking, the General Manager of National Theatre Nigeria, Tola Akerele, described the carnival as a vital platform for preserving cultural identity and promoting national unity.
Akerele noted that the festival highlights Nigeria’s history and the legacy of Afro-Brazilian returnees, while helping younger generations connect with their roots.
She added that such events foster unity and community spirit through music, performances, costumes, and storytelling.
On her part, the Project Director of the carnival, Bolaji Animashaun, outlined activities for the 2026 edition, including vibrant cultural displays, music, dance, and exhibitions showcasing the Afro-Brazilian roots of the Fanti community.
Meanwhile, the President of the Brazilian Descendants in Lagos, Kola Perigue, represented by Secretary Remi Dacosta, emphasised the importance of preserving the cultural legacy of Afro-Brazilian returnees in Lagos.
Perigue expressed optimism that the 2026 edition would further strengthen cultural appreciation and attract wider participation both locally and internationally.
