Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, joined indigenous traditionalists and cultural advocates in celebrating this year’s Isese Day.
In her goodwill message, the Commissioner hailed the annual event as a vibrant reminder of Lagos’ rich cultural heritage and deeply rooted traditional values. She stressed that beyond the celebration, Isese Day is a platform to preserve indigenous practices, promote cultural pride, and foster harmony in a diverse society.
“Isese Day is not just about honouring tradition; it is about recognizing the values of peace, inclusivity, and respect that hold our society together. The Lagos State Government will continue to uphold these principles while creating opportunities for all faiths to thrive in unity,” Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka said.
She further reaffirmed the commitment of the State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to promoting cultural tourism and supporting traditional institutions as part of efforts to sustain Lagos as a hub of cultural excellence.
The Isese Day celebration, marked annually on August 20, is dedicated to practitioners of indigenous religion and traditional institutions across Nigeria. In Lagos, the day is observed with prayers, rituals, processions, and cultural performances, drawing together communities in reflection and celebration of ancestral heritage.
Over the years, the event has gained greater recognition, with the Lagos State Government consistently acknowledging its importance in strengthening social cohesion and cultural identity. This year’s edition once again highlighted the shared responsibility of preserving traditions for future generations while fostering peaceful coexistence among the diverse faith communities in the state.
