The arrest of a Lagos housewife, Misturah Bada, and her accomplice for allegedly staging her own kidnapping to extort ₦2.5 million has raised concerns over the abuse of kidnapping narratives and the diversion of critical security resources.
Police said the case began with a distress call from Bada’s husband, a Nigerian resident in South Africa, who was led to believe his wife had been abducted and that a ₦10 million ransom was demanded.
The report triggered the deployment of personnel and technical assets before investigations uncovered that the kidnapping was fabricated.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, inconsistencies in the victim’s account exposed the plot, including the use of a WhatsApp account linked to a third-party SIM card to negotiate ransom and the payment of funds into the suspect’s own bank account.
The police also recovered a phone the suspect claimed was taken by kidnappers, which had allegedly been sold, reinforcing concerns about deliberate manipulation of evidence to sustain false crime reports.
The Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, warned that false kidnapping reports undermine public safety by diverting attention from genuine threats and eroding trust in emergency response systems.
The case underscores broader issues around digital-enabled extortion, weak identity controls, and the growing strain on law enforcement as kidnapping fears are exploited for personal gain.
