The Lagos State Police Command has commissioned a newly renovated operational base for its Violent Crime Response Unit, VCRU as part of efforts to strengthen tactical policing and improve its response to violent crimes across the state.
The facility, located at Ijora Olopa Oto Road behind the LAWMA Office, was commissioned on Thursday by the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai.
The event also witnessed the presentation of five operational vehicles, 1,200 raincoats and 1,000 pairs of operational boots donated by the Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund to boost the command’s operational capacity and improve the welfare and safety of police personnel.
According to the command, the donated logistics are expected to enhance the effectiveness of officers in carrying out crime-fighting operations across Lagos.
The police said the Violent Crime Response Unit is one of the strategic initiatives of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, established to combat violent crimes and other criminal activities through rapid response, intelligence-led operations and coordinated tactical interventions.
The command noted that the specialised unit serves as an operational backup for responding swiftly to high-risk security incidents, reinforcing the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to proactive policing and public safety.
Speaking at the commissioning, Fatai stressed that effective policing requires sustained collaboration among government institutions, security agencies, community stakeholders and residents.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven and technology-based policing strategies aimed at preventing crime, protecting lives and property, and maintaining law and order across Lagos State.
The police commissioner expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Lagos State Security Trust Fund for their continued support in strengthening policing infrastructure and operational capabilities in the state.
According to him, the renovation of the VCRU operational base and the provision of additional operational assets will significantly improve the command’s ability to respond promptly to emerging security threats.
Fatai also thanked Lagos residents for their continued cooperation and confidence in the police, assuring them that the command would sustain efforts to make the state safer and more secure through enhanced operational readiness and strategic crime-fighting initiatives.
The event was attended by government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders and security stakeholders, including Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Ayodele Ogunsan; the Ojora of Ijora Kingdom, Oba AbdulFatai Aromire; Aare Onikoyi of Yorubaland, Tomori Williams; Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Olalekan Adigun.
Others are President of the Social Intervention Advocacy Foundation, Segun Awosanya and Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee, Kehinde Sowemimo, alongside area commanders and senior officers of the Lagos State Police Command.
