The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LSFRS has decried the rising number of false emergency calls, saying it received 315 such misleading alerts between January and June 2025.
The figure was contained in the agency’s Mid-Year Activity Report released on Monday, which captured key emergency statistics and operational performance for the first half of the year.
According to the report, the LSFRS responded to a total of 1,072 incidents, including 922 fire outbreaks, two minor explosions, 10 building collapses, eight of which were partial, 73 rescue operations, and 65 salvage efforts.
While 252 individuals were successfully rescued from various life-threatening situations, the agency also recorded 62 fatalities. The swift intervention of fire responders helped protect assets across the state, with property worth approximately ₦64.32 billion saved. However, losses estimated at ₦10.72 billion were also documented.
Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, described the data as a reflection of the agency’s impact on preserving lives, infrastructure, and the environment. She noted that the LSFRS continues to contribute significantly to the state’s economy by minimizing fire-related damage.
Adeseye added that the agency is intensifying efforts to engage with stakeholders across the state in a bid to curb fire outbreaks. She also highlighted the upcoming International Fire Safety Conference 2.0 scheduled for later this year, where broader strategies for fire prevention and emergency preparedness will be explored.
The LSFRS urged the public to desist from making prank or false emergency calls, stressing that such actions divert critical resources from genuine life-saving situations.
