The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has successfully contained and extinguished a fire outbreak involving a major storage tank at the Bono Energy Terminal within the Ibru Jetty Complex in Apapa, preventing the incident from escalating to nearby facilities.
The fire, which occurred on Friday at the terminal located along the Apapa–Oworonshoki Expressway near Coconut Bus Stop, Olodi Apapa, was reported to the fire service at about 12:04 p.m.
According to the agency, firefighters from the Ajegunle, Sari Iganmu and Isolo Fire Stations were immediately mobilised and arrived at the scene by 12:16 p.m. to commence firefighting operations.
The incident involved a five-million-litre Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) storage tank that had been engulfed by fire.
The cause of the outbreak has yet to be determined and is currently under investigation.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze was brought under control through a coordinated response involving its personnel and emergency teams from neighbouring oil and gas facilities.
The fire was completely extinguished by 1:54 p.m., preventing it from spreading to adjoining storage tanks and other critical infrastructure within the facility.
The agency confirmed that no casualties were recorded during the incident.
In a statement, the Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, commended the collaborative efforts of emergency responders and other stakeholders whose prompt intervention ensured the successful containment of the fire.
She also appreciated the support received from emergency response teams and partner organisations, noting that their coordinated action helped minimise potential losses and avert a larger disaster.
